I don't understand what happened. I don't understand how Adams could not decide that it was worth it to chase after Memphis for the first goal, how Dest could not run with his man to the center of the pitch for the second goal, and how on the third goal the Dutch guy was standing alone waving his arms for about 10 minutes, without anybody on the United States realizing. This team does a lot right, but if you make such huge mistakes, repeatedly, that undoes all the good little things.
Did I hear him say he’s tired of being the better team and losing? Dude…having a lot of possession does not automatically mean you’re the better team. Our attack was ultimately toothless and our marking was shit. We had some great moments but they had us pretty figured out from the start. Long story short, they’re a better team with a better coach, and it was a fair result. Also our guys looked pretty gassed, understandably.
I almost did the same. They put the time 2 hours ahead for the talking heads to get their predictions wrong.
At least on Fox, those weren't real predictions. Three former USNMT players all saying that the U.S. would win, filmed in front of chanting U.S. fans. Nobody was going to forecast a Netherlands win. It was a fanboy beat-off.
Right. We need to admit that today the better team won today. The US had a good WC overall, with the England match being a highlight, but today was not their best day. Playing against better teams in an important match tends to bring out your weaknesses, and that's what happened today. I'm sure this experience was valuable for the players, and whoever the next coach is can build on it. Next Cup is at home, and this is a young team on the right track.
I remember in high school going to play in a tournament (in Simi Valley). Set up very much like the WC, only the whole tournament needed to be completed over Christmas break. Group stages were in 2 days. I was not skilled by any measure, but I ran cross country so I could run anybody off the pitch. But after 3 matches (and somehow we advanced, much to the displeasure of most of our parents who wanted to go visit family), I was gassed. I was still running most of everybody off the pitch, but even I was walking most of the second half of the 4th match. So I understand how tired Adams and Dest were and why they were not as able to defend. I was thinking in real time the 2nd goal was coming before the shot as Dest lagged, looked drained, while Blind looked fresh.
Better is not just the players, but the tactics. van Gaal was better than Berhalter on top of us having tired players. To me, though, the key was really the defenders. van Dyke and Ake are 1 or 2 levels above Zimmerman and Ream.
You hit on it there. Too insular! Get some more international experience outside of the Caribbean Islands.
That makes partial sense. I think it explains Dest not pursuing in the 2nd goal. But the first goal was after 10 minutes of game time. Tired is not a credible excuse. And the 3rd goal wasn't even a matter of running. There were 3 or 4 Americans within a few yards of the Dutch guy, who was standing still, but they didn't look around to find him. Maybe they were mentally exhausted by that point, that could be. But it wasn't about not being able to run.
Holland set the tempo, controlled most of the game. Their attacks were passing buildups and goals cleanly taken. They invited the US on with their kick and run to break themselves on the defense time and time again. Entertaining to watch though.
All around they were better, NED looked like they were just doing the minimum to win and save energy for Argentina.
Reyna is better at them so I have no idea why Pulisic continued to take them after he came on. The rest of the squad must REALLY suck at them if Pulisic is the best option.
Yahoo! tells me that the U.S. lost because of "missed chances." I don't think somebody watched that game very closely.
