Jeez. That would be Pulisic’s luck. Tuchel becomes the next USMNT manager.

Well I don’t think there’s any way that happens, but he is currently available.

I don’t even know if he’d take Germany if they decide to get rid of Flick.

I hope you'll eat your lunch regardless of who's coaching.

The attractiveness of a NT job is incredibly overstated. You are miles away from the week to week competition which coaching is all about. A NT position is a semi-retiree job. That's being kind.

There are cases it could be attractive if you have no good club offers (which would also be a red flag) and there's a few high level tournaments you're competing in. The Euros and the WC in a cycle at least offers a huge tournament every other year. Copa America maybe qualifies as well.

People seem to think auto qualifying for 2026 is attractive. In one sense it is. But we will be devoid of competitive matches and the challenge/accomplishment of qualifying. The prep and spirit of competition won't be there. Gold Cup is a waste of time. Do we play Copa America? We should.

What coach worth his salt wants to give up four years of competitive weekly coaching for literally, no competition until summer 2026? If you're a coach you want to go thru the Hex.

The whole point of coaching seems to me to be about establishing good processes and (hopefully) having a long enough leash to see them bear fruit over a season or more. It would seem like a nightmare to do all the work of establishing a good process and then being judged on the results of a handful of games in a tournament where a single unlucky break can make all the difference. These jobs seem pretty thankless.

You mean, we are benching Pulisic?
Balogun is only 5'10, 155 lbs. and usually plays the LW, forward spot. He is just a little taller than Ferreira but 5 pounds lighter.

I think is more to do of them not finding better players.
They have Chuqui to our Pulisic.
They don't a Mckennie type or a Adams type, heck, they don't even a Musah.
Their goalie is aging. Their CBs are solid but nothing at the elite level.

Mexico needs to do what we did 4 years. Retire the old guard and start from scratch, and hope they can find diamonds on the rough that they can quickly sell abroad.

I don't mind him staying if he gets assistants that are more offense minded.
GB greatest asset is he is willing to get younger kids.

Exactly. Great at recruiting. Apparently good at building a good team atmosphere (players seem to like him and each other). Great at defense. Good in the middle. Just lacking in the offensive third.

Historically, the problem with playing in the Copa America is that, as a guest team, we don't usually have access to the FIFA window. One year, we sent a squad so light in quality that they asked us to never come back. We might be okay with sending a B-C squad and taking our lumps, but the organizers want the stars.

Copa America Centenario did get on the FIFA calendar & perhaps it can happen again.

If North America and South America ever want to compete with UEFA, the future is to either merge our confederations, or have a very close partnership moving forward.

A combined North/South American tournament has so much marketing potential, it really is a sporting disaster that we haven’t figured this out. In theory, this should benefit everyone in our confederations. USA, Mexico, and Canada benefit from increased competition. The South American nations benefit from the money that would be brought in by tapping into these markets. It’s so obvious, that it’s beyond stupid that we don’t have enough creative minds to make this happen.

    What would I do?

Keep the specific, confederations cups, Gold Cup and Copa America, and I would combine North America and South American tournament for the Nations League.

I do think most coaches do want to experience international football at some point in their careers the way Conte went a coached Italy between club jobs.

Pep Guardiola has also said he wants his next job to be an international job.

I think it’s the sort of thing coaches want to do at some point in their career and the kind of opportunity that’s a good fit when they are burned out from the club game.

I know we hosted it a few years back. And there's been rumors.

My question more was does the Fed try to become a regular participant in the future, particularly this coming cycle with no important games.

There are some rumors out of Italy that at least one team in Italy with American ownership is monitoring Berhalter's situation closely

Is Wikipedia correct that the next Copa America has been moved to 2024 to finally sync it up with the Euros? If so, that makes it a lot easier for us to bring a real team without a Gold Cup conflict. And conmebol would be leaving a ton of money on the table not inviting at least us and Mexico.

And yet they finished higher than us in WCQing.

Yes we won both the Gold Cup and Nations League. Its also true that those games were draws at the end of extra time............on US soil. Could have gone either way.

They won the CONCACAF U23 title in 2020 and the most recently held U17 CONCACAF title.

The demise of Mexico is GREATLY exaggerated.

They lost to Messi & Argentina. Drew with Lewandowski and Poland. That's their crime.

People keep talking about how they can't score goals.
Well, guess what? They scored the same number goals as us in the group phase. We can't score goals. We don't have a #9.

But anyway, i don't think getting knocked out will hinder their ability to recruit dual-nationals. Did the USMNT not even qualifying for 2018 hindor our ability to recruit dual-nationals? Not at all. In fact, young dual-nats saw an opportunity!

J Gomez is not yet cap tied to any country, correct? (I don’t know these rules all that well, but my recollection is that his participation in the Bosnia friendly doesn’t count?)

I would like to see us make a big push for this kid. presumably Mexico will be starting at square one and trying to attract young players. We brought exactly one left-footed full back to the World Cup. Gomez (and Reynolds) completely reenergized that Bosnia match when they entered. I’d love to see JoGo become part of our squad. I think he could become the #2 LB, and that his ceiling is higher than Vines.

Which is not to diss Scally. He is pretty good when he fills in at LB in the BL1. He’d be my #2 RB. But if he is behind Yedlin and Moore, then he is not what Gregg wants (regardless of club performance). And I expect that those two, Cannon, Reynolds and some of the young RB talent will all be in the mix at RB after the WC.*

I also think we need to do better with Mexican-American dual nationals. That will be an increasingly large set of players, and we want to create a sense that we recruit them as hard as we recruit the English, Dutch and German dual nats.
    ————

*On a related note, Scally’s game seems well tailored to a DM role. He covers tons of ground. He likes to mix it up. He has decent speed and good size. And he is a good passer. Just an observation. Won’t happen, I’m sure. And if another coach comes along he may see Scally as more in line with his vision of what a RB should be than Gregg does.

There's a big difference between losing to Argentina and losing to Poland. Poland doesn't have a ton other than Lewandowski and their goalie, while Argentina is loaded with talent. Indeed in last years Euros, Poland finished last in a group that included Sweden, Spain, and Slovakia. Meanwhile Wales advanced to the next round a finished second in a group that included Italy, Switzerland, and Turkey.

Mexico has pretty clearly taken a step back talent wise and the next generation doesn't seem to be coming through. They may have won that 2020 U23 title, but that was basically their first choice group. Who do you think would have won it if the US had been able to send a first choice group (which is basically our World Cup team). Hard to read too much into the results of a tournament that not every team is sending their best.

I think Mexico continues to be ahead of the vast majority of CONCACAF, but overall they've stagnated and maybe even taken a step back. And a lot of their team is going to turnover and it's not clear who the next in line is going to be. They have Edson Alvarez and he's a very good player, but they are going to need more around him.
