    Hansi Flick about...
... Opponents Costa Rica: Looking at the table, Costa Rica also has a chance of reaching the round of 16. A draw could be enough for them if Spain beat Japan. That's why I'm assuming a defensive team, as was the case against Japan. It is important for us that we have a good solution.

... the attitude of his team: We want to get the game ready as quickly as possible in order to put pressure on the other place (the parallel game between Spain and Japan; editor's note). But we know that it will be difficult against a team that is probably very defensive. I'd like to see the attitude we brought against Spain back on the pitch.

... Thinking about an 8-0 that guarantees a place in the round of 16: I think it would be presumptuous and disrespectful to our opponents if we assumed we would score eight goals. We're happy when we win the game. That's our goal. When you put in a defensive performance against Japan like Costa Rica did after a 7-0 loss to Spain, you have to give a lot of respect. We have to see what awaits us and then make sure we have a good solution ready.

... the pressure of having to win: We no longer have progress in our own hands because we didn't play the first game the way we wanted to. Of course we have the right to qualify for the round of 16. We're taking the game seriously and we'll see what happens next. I don't feel any pressure at all. I am convinced that we are on the right track. I have the feeling that it gets better from training to training with the teamwork.

... personal question marks: Everyone was fit when I left the camp. Everyone can train today. Leroy Sané would have been ready to play against Spain from the start. He's no longer struggling and, like so many others, is a good option for the game.

... the three-man midfield with Kimmich, Goretzka and Gündogan: It worked well. Ilkay did well in the 10's position, even if he doesn't otherwise play the position. I think this formation would be doable again.

... Jamal Musiala: Jamal has something special and does our game very well to create dangerous situations. He's had a bit of bad luck so far. We hope that the degree will soon end up where it is supposed to be. But we're happy to have him on the team. He is an absolute asset to us.

... Joshua Kimmich's leadership qualities: I really appreciate Joshua because of his qualities. He can make games fast and calm. He leads the way in training and in games and is always highly motivated. I definitely see him as one of our leaders. It is extremely important for us that we spread the leadership role across several shoulders. But he is definitely one of our most important players.

ONCE AGAINST COSTA RICA: THE STARTING GUN FOR THE SUMMER FAIRY TALE
Germany only played one international match against Costa Rica - but that was a very special one due to its importance. The World Cup in Germany was opened with him on June 9, 2006. The "summer fairy tale" is still unforgettable to this day for everyone who experienced it in front of the screens, in the stadiums or on the fan miles. The opening game itself had an unforgettable moment right from the start. The shooter described the shot that got this World Cup rolling after six minutes as the "goal of my life". Before the decisive group game of the German national team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar against Costa Rica on Thursday (from 8 p.m. CET, live on ARD and on MagentaTV), DFB.de looks back on the only duel with the Central Americans so far.

Before the game in Munich, national coach Jürgen Klinsmann had concerns because his captain, Michael Ballack, of all people, was injured. He has been plagued by a calf hardening since mid-May. He considered himself ready for action, but the doctors advised against it - and Klinsmann listened to them. Not wanting to take any chances, he announced Ballack's suspension by saying: "The calf isn't where it needs to be yet." Bremen's Tim Borowski started for him. Of course, a win against Costa Rica was firmly planned. It was the first meeting with the Central Americans, the supposedly easiest group opponents. "World Cup record against Costa Gurka? That's how Bild asked a bit disrespectfully. However, the question was related to the opening games, which had not yet seen a winner by more than one goal.

Costa Rica made a fool of themselves against an amateur team from Heidelberg (2:3), but did not lose heart. Scorer Paulo Wanchope said: "The pressure is on Germany. They will try to score in the first 15 minutes. But if we are good at the back and counterattack, we can win." In the FIFA world rankings, the countries were only three places apart, Germany was 22nd, Costa Rica was 25th.

Festive opening of the World Cup with Federal President Köhler
The world is looking to Munich, around 1.5 billion spectators are watching the opening game. For the first time since 1970, it's not the world champion who does it, but the hosts again. He arrived the day before from his Berlin quarters, the Schlosshotel Grunewald. The Allianz Arena, which has only been in operation for a year and is the new home of Munich's big clubs FC Bayern and TSV 1860, is of course sold out. The opening ceremony is short and quite Bavarian, is moderated by showmaster Thomas Gottschalk and is generally well received. The same applies to the speech by Federal President Horst Koehler, who is looking forward to "four weeks of football, football, football".

The kick-off will be at 6 p.m. this Friday. 20.13 million people watch ZDF. The sun is shining at the start of this World Cup, which will be called a "summer fairy tale". Choreographies in the national colors of the two opponents ensure a happy picture in the stands. Bernd Schneider is captain for a day, he wins the side election. Costa Rica toasts. Torsten Frings, who shoots at the goal roof from 23 meters, has the first chance to score in the tournament. The network is wriggling, some cheers prematurely.

    Legendary Lame Gate
Two minutes later, cheers are in order. Defender Philipp Lahm grabs a bounced ball on the left, curves into the penalty area and pulls from the corner. The ball hits the corner, with the help of the inside post it lands in the goal - a Sunday shot makes it 1-0. "They don't even know the trick in Costa Rica that he always pulls inwards," assumes ZDF commentator Bela Rethy and finds: "You can't start a World Cup much better!"

The already good mood in the stadium increases a bit, some people are already singing the song about "number one in the world", then it happens: Costa Rica combines through, Ronald Gomez plays on Paulo Wanchope, Arne Friedrich cancels the offside and he Striker with Premier League experience slides in coldly - 1-1. Jens Lehmann, who has been treated for ankle pain since the third minute, has no chance.

    Quick compensation, quick response
The Germans put up with the shock as if nothing had happened. It only takes five minutes for the DFB team to lead again. Bernd Schneider tanks up from the right, Bastian Schweinsteiger directs his pass directly to Miroslav Klose and he pushes the ball over the line from four meters with his left. His 25th international goal on his 28th birthday puts the hosts back on track.

Jürgen Klinsmann drives him on from the outside, directional microphones let the spectators participate in his commands: "Broaden, move, let's go". Lukas Podolski, one of seven World Cup debutants in the DFB team on the pitch, volleys, Bastian Schweinsteiger a flutter ball, but keeper Jose Porras is on guard. Shortly before the break, a Podolski free kick hissed a few centimeters over the goal, then it went into the cabins. Applause, also from the commentator: "A great, because extremely amusing first half," Rethy saw. In numbers: 63 percent ball possession and 12:1 shots on goal for Germany, so the score of 2:1 is rather modest.

Klose puts together the double pack
restart. Podolski burns for his first World Cup goal, shoots it after 30 seconds - over it. As promising as it starts, it gets worse after that. The superiority remains, but the nervousness is obviously growing. Again and again superfluous playback errors creep into the German build-up game, nothing happens for 15 minutes. Then Lahm sets out again for great deeds. This time he tanks up to the baseline and crosses with the weaker left to Klose, whose guard has miscalculated. The Bremen player heads powerfully for the corner, Porras saves, but the rebound is easy prey for the birthday boy: Klose hits the ball under the goal roof with his right hand to make it 3-1.

Shortly thereafter, Lahm dribbles his way into the six-yard box, but a defender stops him at the last moment. With anticipation of certain victory, Germany becomes inattentive, which takes revenge. The 3:2 is almost a copy of the 1:1. Again, a flicked pass to Wanchope tears the defensive line, again the DFB selection is offside and although it is close this time, this goal also counts. "High risk is punished," complains Rethy.

The last ten minutes begin, they are more exciting than expected. Klinsmann changes for the second time, Klose gets his special applause. With Oliver Neuville comes a counter striker. The audience feels the fear in the German team and cheers them on loudly. Central defender Per Mertesacker, who is not having his best day, comes forward at a corner and tests Porras with a header - saved.

    Frings: Slipped shot into happiness
In the 87th minute there is a free kick on the left. Everyone expects a cross from Schweinsteiger, but he puts it across to Frings. The ball bounces a bit for Bremen, which is why the 25-meter shot slips off. Luckily, the projectile hits the 4:2. Rethy celebrates: "That's the decision - the next dream goal of the day."

Now David Odonkor is allowed to play a few more minutes, the Dortmunder, who surprisingly slipped into the squad, comes to his second international match and indicates why he is there. After a rapid start, the sprinter brings the ball flat in front of the goal, Podolski's turning shot is blocked. The final whistle follows and the audience says goodbye to both teams with thunderous applause.

    "Successful start with blemishes"
For the players and the coaching staff it is far from over because there is a need for discussion, as Philipp Lahm writes in his biography Der Feine Difference eight years later: "Costa Rica scored two goals against us with the simplest of means because we were too had stood far apart, with no sense of what the other will do, must do, can do.The day after the game we sit down with Jürgen Klinsmann and Jogi Löw to correct the system in our defensive game. One more such a game with such holes in defense and we have a serious problem."

Die Welt hit the victory, which was received with mixed feelings: "Successful start with blemishes". There was more praise abroad, for example in the French Liberation: "The German team, together with Costa Rica, offered the strongest opening game in 40 years."

    votes on the game
Angela Merkel (Federal Chancellor): "I'm happy about the win. It was a goal-rich opening game."

Franz Beckenbauer (Head of World Cup OK): "It's excellent that our team showed from the first minute that they wanted to be the masters of the house and stuck it out until the last minute."

Jürgen Klinsmann (national coach): "It was a great opening game for a soccer World Cup. Concentration errors, such as before goals are conceded, happen. You have to swallow that. We feel an incredible amount of energy, but we won't take off. We went at a high pace , always came back into play after the goal was scored."

Miroslav Klose: "There's nothing nicer than winning with the team on your birthday and scoring two goals. It was a super feeling when I scored and the people cheered. I'll let the somersault follow later - as you know, I only do it on beautiful and important ones goals."

Philipp Lahm: "The ball should go right there. It wasn't a coincidence, I didn't aim for the corner flag. For me it was the goal of the year, it was even the goal of my life."

Torsten Frings: "Honestly, that was a lucky goal. The ball slipped off me."

Alexander Guimaraes (Costa Rica coach): "In this game it became clear where we could cause damage to the opponent and where we had to be careful in defense. So we weren't careful with the first goal. A mistake also led to 1:2. After the break, my team implemented the plan, but ran into a counterattack that led to 1: 3. After that we were able to control the game more."

seeing other matches in WC. Anything but a win is embarrassing to max.

if we don't win we'll be only big team that embarrass itself in GS.

when will they just say it he's a complete CF, LOL. Everyone keeps describing him when ONLY 1 word is needed

    Also
Klose: "As soon as he's on the pitch, the opponent's focus will shift away from Jamal, Thomas or Leroy, because there will be someone in the penalty box to watch out for. That will automatically free up space for the others"

this is what Low+Flick never understood with false 9 crap. You can't get best out of AM/W with another AM/W playing CF. You need someone who knows how to move and open up space. Havertz was piss poor at this too. Gnabry might have been efficient uptop but didn't open much space for others. Muller doesn't open much space.

I agree he needs to impress to force Flick to use him if not tomorrow at least R16 (assuming we go through)

That BILD lineup... Where on earth is the space and the goals coming from? Hope I am wrong but I can already imagine us desperately chasing the result with 30 minutes to go and Fullkrug still on the bench.

Why can’t Muller and Füllkrug both start v Costa Rica? We don’t need 3 CM’s we need goals.

When has this false 9 xxxxocks worked. What i don't get is Flick never played it whilst in charge of Bayern. This tells me he dont rate Fullkrug, which is astonishing. As klose says, the guy is the complete forward!

Maybe the lineup is upside-down with Sule and Rudiger at CF cause...

No goals from FB; no one is Lahm.
No goals from CM; no one can aim anymore.
No goals from AM; no space for pace.
No goals from CF, because of some genius idea that fools no one but the delusional DFB.

I have a bit of a conspiracy theory around this. I don't think this is the case, but I do wonder if sometimes the DFB puts pressure on the manager to play more... marketable players. As in the attacking midfielders and wingers are more marketable than our strikers, so there's an emphasis on putting as many of them on the field as possible from non-football influences within the DFB. Someone like Havertz, young, up and coming, Chelsea player, may have more cache and marketability than someone like Fullkrug as a veteran striker for Werder Bremen. Just a thought.

Beat Costa Rica for heavens sake, tired of reading guys from other Confederations celebrating European teams being knocked out. Smash them with a proper number 9, it's not acceptable Germany being knocked out.

    Fullkrug>>>>>>>>>>>Kane

the 1st goal is key. If we score 1st will force Costa Rica to open up as they know they can't let us win. If we concede 1st, we're doomed as then would be forced to score 2 while they'll park bus like crazy.

Even If Fulkrug does not score against CR but he will create space for the others to score .
Flick had nothing to loose . You can’t expect from Fulkrug to turn over a game every time in the last 20min .

It seems that Flick and DFB using this tournament as an experiment project with the 2024 EM in mind. He's basically a man of principle, he just stick with his gameplay whatsoever and then hope for the best.

That bulllsihit —- If he goes home today Experiment very short .if so stupid idea, especially if he plays older players .

At Bayern he Bayern he played with a classic 9 … so what is this nonsense with a false 9 .

Must admit will be very disappointed if he starts with the same 11 ( par keherer) against CR - or even with Havertz..

It’s not time to experiment . The idea of playing more famous players
Is also absurd . If the DFB wants to market them selves best is to go as far as possible in a tourney .

As both our 6 are on yellow , no need to worry about Gundo he will get his time playing.

There is no reason he can’t start Fulkrug for the first. 60 min …

Yes we have seen it Gosens had brilliant game against Portugal and then disappointed next game at the euros .

But playing as we did against Japan makes no. Sense

Since the retirement of Klose, DFB felt obliged to resort to the false 9 since no quality striker emerge ever since. The sign was there, as the likes of Kai and Werner regularly rotates to lead German's attack with mediocre output. Flick doesn't even bother to experiment with a real no 9 for a longer period of time during the qualifier and friendly, and it'll more likely it wont happening now.
If his preferred gameplay failed, then in the last 20 min he'll use his undesirable tactic.

Depending of the results elsewhere, Germany must win with a big score line. This is where the role of big center forward comes handy as it will be a nuisance for the opposition's defender.

[emoji2788]Miroslav Klose tells Bild on Niclas Füllkrug: "He has a certain presence in the penalty box and a good nose for situations. He brings a good package for a striker: good finishing inside the box, he's two footed and strong with headers. I heard his interviews after the Spain game and immediately noticed that he doesn't get carried away. He knows that more still has to come. When I see how he conducts himself and from what I heard from the team, I can only say: that's exemplary. Football needs such guys."

[emoji780]Does Füllkrug need to play against Costa Rica?
[emoji2788]Klose: "Costa Rica will certainly sit deep, but I don't know Hansi's game plan. For me it's important that when Niclas gets his minutes, he should use the opportunity. As soon as he's on the pitch, the opponent's focus will shift away from Jamal, Thomas or Leroy, because there will be someone in the penalty box to watch out for. That will automatically free up space for the others."

[emoji2788]Klose on Füllkrug saying that he used to look up to him: "That's really nice to hear, because it means I did something right as a footballer. Niclas' statement is a big compliment for me. I'm even happier that a striker from my ex-club Werder has the chance to show what he can do."
