Cameroon also beat Colombia in the R16 in 1990 (I made the same mistake this morning thinking it would be only the second one!).
That is partly because I understand Elo weighs NL games as highly as qualifiers - which is about right I think - while FIFA weighs them as friendlies.
They are weighed less than qualifiers, but more than friendlies. It goes: World cup > Continental tournaments > Qualifiers > Nation's League > Friendlies > Non-FIFA dates friendlies (they barely matter)
FIFA Points Ranking after 36 games. If 2 points per win and 1 point per draw were given. UEFA: 35/13 = 2.69 CONMEBOL: 10/4 = 2.5 CAF: 11/5 = 2.2 CONCACAF: 7/4 = 1.75 AFC: 9/6 = 1.5
In terms of advancing out of the group stage, so far we've got: UEFA: 2/13 - Wales eliminated CONMEBOL: 0/4 - Ecuador eliminated Africa: 1/5 Asia: 0/6 - Qatar, Iran eliminated CONACAF: 1/4 - Canada eliminated
I may be wrong but I think Senegal is only African team with a positive World Cup record: 5 wins, 3 draws and 3 losses (Turkey, Colombia, Holland).
Turkey should really be considered a draw. But yeah Senegal by far the best record among African teams, and only got eliminated last time because of yellows, otherwise it would be 3 for 3. Interesting fact about England vs African teams at worldcups. Not the best record though they haven't been beaten. 1990 Cameroon tied England after 90 minutes 2002 a poor Nigeria team tied England 2010 a poor Algeria team tied England 2018 England beat Tunisia in the last minute
This method is based on the UEFA club coefficient ranking: 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw (KO stage matches which are decided on penalties are treated as draws and 1 point each is awarded) divided by the number of teams.
They almost snuck 4 teams through, which would have been crazy! Tunisia came so close! (not that Ghana is in yet, of course).
I must say, I have no idea why it was disallowed. The FOX commentators were of no help, as usual. They kept saying offside, but an offside wouldn't require the referee to go check the monitor (plus it didn't look offside). I guess it was either interference from an offside player or a foul in the box. But that's only a guess.
Griezmann was offside when ball was played (watch replay as he runs back from offside position). Yes, Tunisian headed it but as per new rules, the Tunisians play was not deliberate, hence Griezmann remained in an offside position. LOL Who would have thought Tunisia would beat France and tie Denmark, yet fail to get out of the group. They paid the price for comming out so flat against Australia.
The Iran-Tunisia curse continues. Only top 40ish ranked teams with multiple WC appearances to have never made the round of 16.
FIFA Points Ranking after 40 games. If 2 points per win and 1 point per draw were given. CONMEBOL: 12/4 = 3.00 UEFA: 35/13 = 2.69 CAF: 13/5 = 2.60 CONCACAF: 9/4 = 2.25 AFC: 11/6 = 1.83
