I'd argue one of their best players is on the bench. I'm not sure why Reyna hasn't seen more of the field.

I'm gonna assume he's in 3G's doghouse for some reason.

Agree. Reyna has talent to be a starter. I can't understand why he is not playing. He must be injured. He is way ahead of Weah.

We're great until we get a lead. I have to say, I have been skeptical, but in the midfield and defense this squad is better than its predecessors. Could use a couple of goal scorers, though.

Also, I don't see the point of Moore and Wright. But the starters + Aaronson work for me.

Yep. I mocked on Dest for two matches, he seemed to me like a classic Yank (I know he is not from the USA, but still). All energy and bustle, but not a guy you want near the other team's goal. But he was fantastic today.

That was one of the best games I’ve seen him play, he’ll often have a dangerous biff or two but not today.

I was about to write the same. Those two must be among the worst players in this WC. They didn't bring anything, no intensity and zero awareness. What in hell is happening to Gio Reyna? How come those clowns are playing ahead of him?

I should have worded this differently.

Bootsy wasn't "clowning", but if he thinks the non-Sinema non-Manchin Democrats being the only thing between the US and something more Qatar-like than we have today merits playing word salad (with me. Idc what he said to Umar) over another nation's morality, I have to disagree with him.

We're not different enough right now to complain righteously about Qatar. Seven, eight years ago, maybe. Not anymore. Not ever again, probably. Right now, the best thing we can do is agree to help out women and gays in nations like Iran and then tending to our own pressing business keeping the US from becoming a Qatar.

We elected Donald Trump. Our days as the world's moral cop are over. We get to be the world's "This really is the best option, y'know" cop now.

You can see the talent that attracted Barça to buy him. But I think his form has lacked consistency at times.

When he's on form, he's perhaps the most talented fullback this nation has had. I think that he has something to prove on a personal level, in that perhaps Xavi was too quick to send him away from Barça.

Now, this was (no insult intended, but) "just Iran," and they inexplicably ceded time and space to him, so I'll temper my excitement just a notch. But if he can continue to do this, wow!

    Good article....

Still, they were put under the crush in injury time, partly due to their coach. Look, Gregg Berhalter has been a positive more than a negative. His initial game plans against England and Iran got them the four points that took them out of the group. The U.S. deserved to win all three matches. That didn’t happen without him. However, his substitutions have been bewildering. It’s unclear what it is Shaq Moore does for a living, but protecting leads late in a soccer game very clearly is not part of it. He got beat, he couldn’t complete a pass, and was just a constant check engine light in both of his appearances.

With 10 minutes of normal time to go, knowing there would be a ton of injury time because that’s how this tournament works, Berhalter went completely park-the-bus and hauled off a forward to bring on Walker Zimmerman and go to a 5-4-1. Zimmerman won all his headers, but it was far too early to do that and the organization went a little zany thanks to the introduction of a third centerback. That’s something you do with five minutes left, not 20.

Which meant the U.S. didn’t have any threat going forward. You can see out a game by carrying some threat of getting out on the counter. This is where Gio Reyna would have been a help, or even Jesus Ferreira. That’s because Haji Wright did nothing, including not even chasing down defenders or pressing to make their travels up the field that much harder. And he fluffed the one chance he got on the counter, one he could have just taken to the corner and ended the game. You need a forward in that spot who is going to run around a lot. If that’s not what Ferreira does, why’s he here? Why’s Deandre Yedlin here if we’re going to see Moore ahead of him?

I will say one thing. I feel sorry for the Iranian players after this loss.

Many of them didn't sing during their national anthem in the first game and voiced support for the Iranian people. Whether they intended it to be anti-regime, Western media interpreted and widely reported their actions as anti-regime and in support of the protesters. Iran has also already arrested several former national team players for their support of the protests.

I can only assume that given the Western media's reaction, those players that didn't sing during the anthem and voiced support for the people are looking at getting a visit from Iranian authorities when they get back to Iran.. A victory over the US or advancing out of the group stages at the US's expense was likely the only chance they had to avoid that fate. Again, this is regardless of if their actions actually meant what the Western media claims it did.

That's you projecting onto my posts. Which is understandable -- I didn't give you much to work with. But that, too, is understandable, as they weren't meant for you. (well, except for the last one -- see below)

The long list of sins of the U.S., both historical and present-day/ongoing, gives me no obligation to take someone seriously when they take a sharp turn into la la land or, worse, trollery. When people act as a troll acts, or seem to enable trolls, the deep wisdom of young Master Wiggum always seems appropriate to me, and probably always will. It's the opposite of feeding the troll -- even moreso than silence, for me.
