The USMNT has a extremely talented group of young players. IMO they are the best group I have witnessed in the last 30+ years. Soccer coaches are the most important element in a team's success, unfortunately we are winning in spite of Berhalter, not because of him. Question: Besides coaching in the the MLS, who would hire him to coach their team or country? We need a coach that matches our team's talent to move forward in the future.
Berhalter will have opportunities if he doesn't continue with the USMNT. In the last year and a half he's won the Gold Cup, Nations League, and has now advanced to the group phase of the World Cup. Mexico and Tata Martino have failed to beat him in 4 straight matchups. The much-respected Tata Martino (winner of trophies in 4 nations) until he started losing to Berhalter. At some point people have to stop this nonsense. Just tip your cap and move on. BY the way, the whole schtick of the team winning in spite of him is just nonsense. Berhalter recruited players like Musah and Dest to play for him. This IS his team. He's the one that put this group of guys together. There is no "winning despite Berhalter." He's the captain of the ship. He picked the sailors. I'm no great Berhalter lover, but come on. At some point you just have to stop being a hater, and admit that he's done well. One thing's for sure. He's created an environment that these young guys appear to love being a part of. The culture of this team seems awesome. And they're fighting like hell out there for him.
You’re right. It’s crazy to think a team which got out of the group three out of the last 4 WCs it played in and has players of higher value than ever before could get out of a group in which they are the second ranked squad. Because we aren’t France.
Laos and the Cayman Islands might give him an interview but ultimately the job would go to a proven winner like Herdman who will F the competition.
A bunch of kids winning Cups in spite of their coach. I hope they spite him all the way to a Semifinal!
---------- USF bad for that, but it wasn't our coach or players Canada's coached pulled a stupid and look what happened to them.
=============== Brendon for Pulli was a no-brainer for second half, strictly on the basis there is still (?) something wrong with Gio. The Zimmer sub scared me. But if you were going to go defensive, who else is there really? Now for the next game if Pulli can't go and Gio is healthy , do we start Gio over Brendon? Let's say Gio only has 45 minutes in him, do you play him in the first half and hope his creativity catches us a goal and bring in Brendon to be a pain in the second half. Or the other way around? Coaching is not fun
When I looked at it by eyeing the grassline he looked clearly onside. I could be wrong because it's not an up and down angle but would've liked to see one or 2 more angles
His feet positioning on the grassline were onsides. There's an argument part of his leg is offsides. Was definitely very close. Nice he finished it.
The number of people who watch sports and are still surprised that no one dominates a game for the full time is astounding. It's like when I meet new basketball fans and they get furious that it is literally a game of runs.
We shoulda fire Berhalter anyway after WC no matter how far we would go in this tourney. If he stays for another 4 years, we will repeat 2006.
As far as group stage performance: 1) 5 pts is joint best since 1930 (2 wins in 2), along with 2010. 2) +1 GD is joint best since 1930 (+6) aling with 2010. 3) One goal conceded is best since 1930 (none, 2 matches). 4) Never trailing is first time since 1930 that has happened. And from a group with the lowest (most difficult) AVG FIFA ranking. We bossed every team in the first half. Even England. Much improved from 2010. The problem is we only have 10-11 guys at that level and some of them are not 90 minutes fit. There is a big drop off when we go to the bench at most spots. And we lack top drawer players at some spots (CB and CF).But top drawer players at every spot AND little to no drop off from the subs is Brazil/France territory. This ain't rocket science. Acosta, LDLT, and Roldan are nowhere near as good as Adams, McKennie, and Musah. And Moore, Yedlin, and Scally are nowhere close to Dest & Jedi. The coach isn't an idiot. Most of our reserve just are not at the same level. And Reyna is not a guy you put on to protect a lead.
I've never been a "Berhalter Out" guy though I have certainly been critical of him at times – and yeah, the Reyna thing is truly a head-scratcher – but it must be acknowledged that he just lead the USA through the only undefeated group stage in the 10 World Cups we have been in. I am happy for the team and for him. It often seems as though some people want the team to fail just so Berhalter will be fired (and to justify their rabid hate for him).
Kasey Keller is on Futbol Americas tonight saying Berhalter is a good friend of his, and said while he has no inside information, that he could see him not wanting to do another cycle. Says specifically that Berhalter misses working with players on a day to day basis. Doesn’t mean he won’t be back, but it’s not a given if is US Soccer offers him the chance to.
Wouldn’t be too surprising. 2026 is a tempting opportunity but it would probably be hard for an ambitious coach to be out of the club game for eight years.
Your point was incorrect. But I absolutely agree with the overall sentiment. Gregg Berhalter just got this team out of the group at the World Cup, after winning a Gold Cup and the Nations League. The last bosses couldn’t even qualify. But there are still people around these parts saying “I wish he would actually accomplish something. If only this team had somebody who knew what they were doing, they might win something.” Losers, all of them.
Nah, that defense wasn’t luck and neither were two well taken goals and good possessive play for the most part. Fully deserved that the U.S. is moving on.
By the way: The U.S. is 16th in the rankings. Wales is 19th and Iran is 20th. If you expected a cake-walk, you're just nuts.
