I'll not take the bait regarding politics on a SPORTS message board. Talk about peeing in one's cereal.
I'll say UCLA has certainly passed every ACC test they've been given! Maybe they'll continue to do so. Maybe not.
Honestly, any of the remaining teams could win this CC.

I heard that the Irish are hopping mad about being portrayed as drunken fighters as well. But they’re headed home. There are also some angry women who claim Alabama’s nickname has nothing to do with jerseys stained in red blood from their Iron Bowl battles with Auburn. UNC beware however, because Tar Heels might be the most derogatory term of them all.

No word out of Los Angeles on any angry bears. But I’m sure it’s coming.

Imo its been that way since the round of 16. No dominant team out there this year. Transfer portal may be a factor in that.

OK FSU, how about let us win this one and send Anson out in style? :)

    Is this Anson's last year?

This is IMO a rare year in that any of the 4 teams could win the title w/o it being considered a huge upset.
Most years, 1 team is the clear favorite going in, even if occasionally they don't win it.
This year any of the 4 could win it and it would not be surprising.
It may have happened before, but I don't remember it.

Congratulations, you win the the award for the “ignorant post of the year.”

You have no right to comment on what is considered to be offensive by a group of people. Their perception is their reality. You’re probably too obtuse to realize that.

    True ...

Based on ratings, Alabama and UCLA are basically a dead heat.

Ratings ordinarily would give Florida State a statistical win likelihood over North Carolina. The game, however, is at WakeMed, which gives UNC something like (but not quite) home field advantage. With that, the FSU-UNC game also is within the statistical tie area.

For the championship game, whoever gets there and likewise taking the UNC pseudo home field advantage into consideration, the game also will be within the tie area.

    No or Maybe.

Anson has given no hint that he is ready to retire. His contract does not expire until after the 2023 season. And he may get an extension from there. Suffice it to say that he will set his own reasons and date for retiring. I can't imagine that the he would be removed until Anson says he is ready. For the moment, at age 72 he is in excellent health and sharp as a tack and appears to still enjoy coaching.

On the other hand, there have been a number of speculations on these boards that if he can win one last Championship with the Tarheels, he will go ahead and retire. (His likely successor is already in place.) The implication here is that he would not want to go out on a loosing streak, and with the consolidation of parity in women's college soccer, it would be foolish not to retire if you had once again won it all. But I'm not convinced that is how Anson thinks.

As crazy as it may sound for someone with 21 NCAA titles, I don’t think he plays for that. It’s about the players and the process.

Relax. It was a joke. You should look into a sense of humor. They’re free and you’ll live longer. And you’re right. I’m offended that you called me ignorant and obtuse. Beyond that, FSU spoke to the Seminole tribe and received their support, so I’m offended that someone called FSU fans silly and offensive. See how that works?

That person chose to use a sports board to criticize people and a school he or she does not know. Certainly has a right to be offended. And someone else has the right to call it unjustified and silly. And I was only half kidding about the other schools. Should Irish people be offended at ND being called the Fighting Irish? And Tar Heels is in fact a very derogatory term. I’m shocked no one has said anything about that. At some point, people need to worry about more important things. If you want to, you could find offense at pretty much anything. I’d prefer to focus on the positive.

You may want to do a bit more research on Tar Heel, it doesn’t appear that you really know much about the origin and use of the term.

Don’t agree that the tomahawk question is a political issue and not a sports issue. The sole use appears to be at athletic events — any tomahawk chops at concerts, in the classroom? — and it clearly is the way Florida State’s sports fans have chosen to identify themselves. I am put off by mcskillz language but his point is correct that the chop represents a stereotypical image of a racial group that is offensive to many.

Whaa ... ? It's a Civil War term for troops who stood their ground so much that it seemed like they were stuck to the ground with tar on their heels ... how is that derogatory in any way?

I guess I need to be open and not let it surprise me if it had a different hidden meaning that I'm not aware of like the whole "Free Palestine" hidden meaning ...

The only argument I’ve heard against Tar Heel is one based on what babranski says, that it shouldn’t be used because it was a term for confederate soldiers from North Carolina. However, my understanding is that the use of Tar Heel preceded the Civil War by a good bit, probably coming from the state’s shipping industry and tar on the heels of port workers. Pre-Civil War its usage tended to be toward working class people generally. There is an old story that Stonewall Jackson expressed admiration for North Carolina confederate troops for standing tough as if they had tar on their heels, but even if it is true is was a play on an existing term rather than creating a new name meant only for confederate soldiers. In short, although Tar Heel certainly referred to confederate soldiers, it was not applied just to them, it was a reference for pretty much all North Carolinians. After the Civil War the term became more common, used for everyone in the state.

The exact origin of the term is hazy and I would be glad to hear from someone if they have better information from trustworthy sources. To say, as SpeakerofTheHouse did, that the term Tar Heel “is in fact a very derogatory term” is simply misinformed. Unless, I guess, you consider it inherently derogatory to call anyone a North Carolinian.

I’m guessing the FSU fans have little interest in this discussion. My apologies for taking time on their thread, but that’s where the issue arose. And good luck this weekend, though of course I would prefer to see UNC win. As always, it will be a great game to watch.

I was using it as an example that things could be taken the wrong way. Tar Heel has a racial undertone to it. A little research will also show references to the Civil War as you mention. Statues have come down for less. Not intended to offend I’m certain, but I could see where some might take issue. And that’s my point. I wish people were less sensitive to every little thing, because it desensitizes people when major issues come around. I’m not looking to get into a political debate on a soccer board so this is the comment I’ll make on this thread with good wishes to all the programs playing this weekend.

Touche, your point is well-taken and perhaps I overreacted. This forum is not the place for political statements and this post is the last I will mention anything on the matter. McSkillz has the right to be offended by the "tomahawk chop" regardless of FSU having the support of the Seminole tribe. The rant against it was probably not appropriate for this forum. My apologies for stating that you are ignorant and obtuse.

Having said that, it is never OK to tell others what should or shouldn't be offensive to them. As I mentioned, their perception is their reality. You stated that you were making a joke but jokes are part of the reason that discrimination and stereotypes about some groups of people seem normal to so many people. Think about how many jokes there are about gay people, black people, Jewish people, etc, and how many think that there is nothing wrong with those jokes.

I am sensitive to the issue because I am a member of a group of people that have faced their share of discrimination and derogatory tropes. I've had people tell me that I shouldn't be offended by someone spouting a joke about Jews. They said that I was being too sensitive. Again, nobody can tell anyone else what they should or should not deem to be offensive.

FWIW, I have a fine sense of humor but thank you for your concern.

Yeah I'm honestly sorry for getting angry and attacking the FSU mascot on a sports forum. It's clear that I've studied at both UC Santa Cruz, UCLA for Graduate Studies and I'm Lakota enrolled at Standing Rock Reservation in South Dakota and they gave me a scholarship for both those degrees. My grandparents came from the reservations, my dad grew up in East LA and my mom came from Norwalk, CA, a suburb of southern CA. I only knew soccer because my apartment mates, a boy, was from Argentina and he and his whole family worshiped soccer. I never knew what it was, and he and his dad literally taught me football on the streets. I never did club soccer because my parents and my dad couldnt' be there, but like hell did I know techincal skills from this kid. We played good soccer on the streets. Sometimes I often wonder what I could have done in an organized football club that would have been super expensive.

UCLA means a lot to me because my dad and his brother had something called a "bridge program" back in the 70s that took minority kids and tried to give them tips on how to do college at UCLA and many times, these kids just dropped it, these included my dad and his brother. So it meant a lot for my dad when I tried for UCLA because he felt like a failure. I made it as the first person in my family to go to college and also go to graduate school. So I never took this school for granted.

I think in the end game, this is what is missing sometimes. Picking out those kids in the streets and offering them a ride or a scholarship because those are the talented kids we need in the game. Not the rich white girls that get to go to club teams and go through the reigns that way. We need some kids off the streets that are like me that are much more talented but you get the point.

I just wanted to apologize to Tom81, because he seems like a good human being. I didn't meant to offend him. He seems like a nice guy. I hope he sticks around next season even if his team or our team aren't around in the championship. Although..... could be kinda fun to see our teams "duking" it out.

I also apologize for not acknowledging cpthomas, he's super neutral and I didn't mean to attack statistics. I get frustrated at stats sometimes just like other fans. But there's no reason to attack someone that goes out of their way to track women's soccer.

The Seminoles fought so hard nearly equalizing from an insurmountable 3-0 deficit. But they could not overcome the de facto home field advantage and a roster that was 15 players smaller (I believe). Just one play different and we are in OT.

From the excitement on the wings from Jo and Jodi, Beata’s enforcer mentality, Roque’s steadiness in goal, and Nighswonger’s skills on shots and set pieces, I’ve had a lot of fun watching this team.

Such a fun team to watch this year and so much for them to be proud of after a rocky summer. Going to miss these seniors. Jenna really stepped up her game to lead this team. Clara didn’t have her highlight reel year from a couple seasons ago but was a steady presence in the middle. And finally got to see Payne get meaningful time in a position suiting her and she was great! (Still so confused why she got more minutes in the final four last year than the rest of the season combined… but all worked out!)

Hoping Pensky can hit the transfer portal and recruiting trail to build out the roster for depth and a few game changers for the future across the field. Some rebuilding in store but that front line will be dangerous if Alagoa and ??? can get service in to them. Biggest question for me next year. Nighswonger and Payne were critical getting service in all year. Not sure who joins alagoa in the mid field and don’t expect Nguyen to advance play down the wing as effectively from the back… we’ll see what Pensky comes up with.

Wow, what a comeback by Florida State. They clearly were the better side in the first half, then Carolina totally dominated to the 3-0 lead, then Fla State roaring back. What a game. Congrats to Florida State for their year. Hope there’s one more title for UNC.
