USMNT players are, for the most part, like pop stars. Easily replaceable by another and rarely memorable…

Walker Zimmerman, Eric Wynalda. Alexis Lalas, Chris Wondolowski, Jeff Agoos, Steve Samson, and John Harkes are all the scandals.

Scandal probably not the right word, I was saying in comparison to Celebrities, these would be the villains in the press because well everyone hated them during the World Cup.

    Harkes/Wynalda/Sampson in 1998
    Jeff Agoos in 2002
    Lalas because its Lalas
Wondolowski for the biggest fail in American Sports History
and now Walker Zimmerman because he gave up a PK as if it was a unheard of

Inter Miami Fusion going for broke with Lionel Messi it seems... could the stars align right and Ronaldo come to the LA Galaxy...

I for one am SUPER excited of the prospect of both coming to the MLS. They're the best players in modern history and to see them play live is an absolute goal of mine. It will not be in PayPal Park either, I'll travel to their home stadiums to watch them play or if they play in Levi or Standford I'd go.

I bet JazzyJ would say Monteiro, Thompson or some other random jackass on our team is better than or produces more than Messi.. and have some type of bullshit analysis saying Messi sucks.

Don't worry - I'm sure even now our crack scouting team is digging up the Mongolian Messi and the Rwandan Renaldo...

Messi will be 36 and older than Gonzalo Huguain who just retired before turning 35.

I wish he would have come to MLS 10 or even 5 years ago!

    What a joke!

I wish teams would sign 26 instead of 36 year old stars already!

I've had a chance to see two of my favorite international players play live in MLS (Valderrama and Kaka). I would love to see Messi and CR7 here.

Valderrama played well in the early years of MLS but when I saw Kaka, I wasn't at all impressed.

Messi and Renaldo coming to the US is just going to fuel the fire that MLS is just a retirement league for aging Euro stars.....thought MLS was making progress in moving away from that stigma.

Both world class players (and in the twilight of their careers) but I don't want to see them in MLS. Just my opinion.....

But if they do join MLS, what ever team they join will get a huge boost in jersey sales.....

Saw Messi in the Quakes - Colombus (back when Lenny was the enemy!) & Barcelona - Chivas double header at Candlestick. Chivas took down Messi twice at the 18. Any other player would have stayed on the turf and taken the free kick. Messi got up both times and took the shot which the keeper had to block for the corner kick. And it was just a friendly!!

Messi is by far one of the classiest players to ever play the game. Anyone who wouldn't want the opportunity to see him play live is full of dog shit.

I wish I could have seen Pele for the Cosmos.

The crowd that saw Messi play Candlestick was overwhelmingly a Chivas crowd, but still chanted “Messi” at points. It was a love fest.

It's amazing to me that with the mileage and the beatings these guys have endured, that they're still doing it at such a high level at their age - 35 for Messi, 37 for Ronaldo, among many others. I think the training, physical therapy / treatment, and diet for these guys just has to be so good.

    I agree totally!

It will be great for ticket and jersey sales.

It was also be great for the media but I wish he would have come 10 or even 5 years ago.

MLS needs to start signing stars in their prime.

I saw him live when I lived in Europe in his first year.

    He was awesome back then.

I was a kid when Pele came with the Cosmos to San Jose.

The game was sold out and there were people hanging in the trees at Spartan Stadium trying to catch a glimpse.

He was 36 and marked the entire game but still had a lot of skill.

The Quakes ended up winning as they had a great team that season.

I hear what you're saying and to a certain point I agree.... BUT if the league is going to sign a couple of players on the wrong side of their 30's it would most definitely be messi/ronaldo.

The way I see it at this point with the whole "retirement legue" crap is I believe now it's us actual MLS fans having trouble with what other people think of our league.
Because if anybody that still throws that out, it's obvious that they haven't been following the league the last 3-4 yrs minimum and are still stuck on MLS 1.0 or 2.0 and we all know we're past that.
There will be exceptions obviously when a certain player/s become available (messi/ronaldo) that ANY league would love to have.
Most fans around the world who keep spewing out retirement league, clearly haven't seen our league the last 5 yrs and are living of the old MLS model.

Actually, each time I read about how MLS is a retirement league, it comes from the Euro snobs.

All I ever read is how MLS is this or that but no one ever brings up or criticizes other leagues.

I mean you never read or hear about the inferior J, A, K , Qatari, Saudi Leagues but it’s always how bad MLS is.

Amazingly , I don’t see as many big name stars flocking over to those places anymore.

If they do go there, we rarely hear or know much about them.

Correct. I also believe there is and always will be a USA stigma and soccer/football that certain people specially eurosnobs will forever carry with them.
Just the other day when the states tied england they had a melt down because according to them they are much more superior.
Some folks will never give props to MLS no matter what. It'll most likely be like this for many more years. It's ok, we MLS fans know how much the league's growing and will continue to do so.
Also, we don't have to do things the way the premier league, la liga, el calcio etc. do it and there I believe lies a lot of opinions about MLS. This league is proving yr after yr that not only is it growing but they're doing it with precautions with growing stronger but smart with money. Something that many many teams are in trouble the n the euro leagues.

The English pundits couldn't stand how the USA tied them 0-0 and all they really said or reported on is how bad The Three Lions were but not how good the Americans are or were.

It seems they can't bring themselves to saying that maybe America may have arrived.

They tend to correlate MLS with that same thinking as well.

Aside from the Quakes, this inferior Level of League criticism in my opinion remains along the lines of bias or prejudice.

I mean you criticize something you hate in order to justify something else.

It’s kind of like a jilted ex criticizing or making fun or the other just after a breakup.

If you don’t care or are indifferent, you usually say nothing but the more you talk about or complain about the former relationship, the more you show how much you care.
