Reports that Naomoto broke down crying after being subbed off. Apparently this reality check has been really hard on the players.
Although, actually, Naomoto in tears isn't really breaking news. I've seldom seen any player in the women's football who was even close to be as emotional as her.
If there was an obvious choice to replace her then I would say yes, but there just is not. Basically there is Kobayashi whom I have always rated, but she is coming off a long injury and gets injured a lot anyway. There is Ueki who will obviously play, but after that...Sugasawa who has the same problems as Tanaka re finishing. If Chiba was fit she would be the obvious choice. There is also Iwabuchi. Anyway, I think Tanaka will be used quite a lot in the world cup. She is very good on the ball, deceptively fast and she also works very hard off the ball. But yeah her finishing, it becomes a touch frustrating. I would not mind the finishing so much if she played more like she does for INAC. She is a lot more than a goal scorer for INAC and has shown terrific vision to set up goals, but her vision seems to desert her when playing for Nadeshiko. There was a play early on in the first half against Spain where she could have put Fujino through on goal, but decided to take a meek shot from 40m out. Maybe Fujino could have done a better job of telling her she was there, but she made a poor choice in my opinion. It was actually a really good pass from Hayashi too. The play starts from 2:10 if anybody is interested.
Spain vs. Japan (long highlights - should be in 1080p 50 fps when done processing) (Give me a shout if you want full match uploaded on google drive).
That foul on Tanaka in 28th min is DOGSO and sending off. VAR will not have mercy at WWC and lenient, unexperienced refs from Cyprus will not help Spain again. Vilda needs to reconcile with Barca players or QF at WWC will again prove to be the glass celling for Spain.
Yeah, I am not sure how that was not called a foul. I know that of late there have been Nadeshiko players who have been prone to falling over very easily, but Tanaka was clearly fouled. Given that Spain beat the US I was expecting a bit more from them. I was genuinely surprised by how many good opportunities Nadeshiko were able to create. I think Nadeshiko match up against teams like Spain quite well. It is just those teams that are quick on the counter and play with genuine speed and power that trouble them.

Update from Italy (where the last match-day of Serie A Femminile's regular season was played): - yesterday, Roma won at home vs Sampdoria by 2-0. Moeka Minami played the full game. Roma are leading the league with a 4 points advantage over Juventus; - today, Inter had a 0-0 away draw vs Fiorentina (the absence of Tabitha Chawinga seems to have hit Inter's offensive power). Mana Mihashi played the full game. Inter dropped at 4th place. Highlights:

Not even the first time for her in it. Although I sometimes wonder who makes these best 11 teams: Juventus' Matilde Lundorf, for instance, this week allowed a goal by completely losing track of the player she was marking and had in general a quite sub-par performance in my eyes.

Despite the fact that I actively boycott Men's World Cup in Qatar, I can't help congratulating our male team.
