Is there a downside or upside to using a search firm for women's soccer hires? The upside would be if you have an administration that doesn't know anything about women's soccer (and that has to be a quite a few out there) then you can hire a search firm that would be more in the know to form a candidate pool. That's a good way to handle that if in theory the search firm knows what they're doing. Pay some $ for a firm to help with the search. On the other hand, is there a downside? Does the search firm truly have a good feel on this, and is there an advantage for using and paying for a firm?

SuperSoccer said NAU is using a firm, which is Athletics Staffing and Consulting. Richmond is also using a firm, different one than NAU. Wonder if it helps anymore rather than an athletic administration directly doing the work on their own and their networks to make a good candidate pool and eventual smart final decision.

I would suggest that any effort to expand the pool of qualified applicants is a good idea. Esp if you are on a timeline or perhaps haven't been successful, are in a rural area, maybe don't have good "soccer people" on staff. Some schools don't have men's soccer staff or alumni to be on committees for example.
Answer - could be many reasons it's helpful.
A good search firm will knock on doors that committee folks might not and do it quickly and discreetly. Lots of coaches don't even think about leaving or are looking at the market until they get that call.

Example - search firm found a great coach for a kinda niche sport that was at an NAIA school half way across the country. Turns out they were from our area originally. Committee folks would have never found this candidate.

You would think these soccer jobs get tons of applicants but these days, I can say first hand, the applicant pools are nothing like they were before the pandemic. There are several reasons for that trend I imagine.

There were 198 D1 programs in 2004 according to the RPI archives.
    The current number is 205.

Several schools have moved recently, not necessarily brand new programs.

St. Thomas, Southern Indiana, Lindenwood, Bellarmine, Queens, Merrimack, Stonehill, and Utah Tech (Dixie State) all come to mind in the last 2ish years.

    (sigh)
Nevertheless, there were 198 coaching positions in 2004 and all the men’s soccer coaches were male.

now there are 205 men’s soccer coaching positions and all the coaching positions are filled by males.

That’s a net gain of 7 positions. All positions are filled by males. It’s not hard maths. Most college graduates would get it.

There are still no female head coaches in D1 mens soccer.

Again. You’re missing an important piece of this puzzle. There is a shortage of female coaches on the women’s side. What makes you think any females want to coach on the men’s side? Maybe there are some, but that’s a giant assumption you’re making. We had an opening on the men’s side years back and not a single female applied for the job. So while I get that you’re implying since there are no women coaches in D1 on the men’s side, most, if not all of the coaches on the women’s side should be women, I’m not sure you could fill every women’s position with a female if you tried. Maybe you could, but I don’t think it would be easy.

Something else to consider. What is the breakdown of AC positions by gender? Without that info and without a breakdown of who has applied for each job, it is pointless for people to argue.

In these discussions, very rarely does anyone on these boards believe anyone hired is good enough. That’s what has basically been inferred through the years of reading and posting.

Every job should have world class coaches hired and applying. Every job should meet every criteria that each poster has made-up in their minds.

If only more of these posters were on search committees or university ADs, every program would be undefeated and setup to win national championships every year.

Why would a female want to coach Men's D1 soccer? Men are assholes, we are. Thick headed, stubborn, argumentative, prideful. Hell, I can barely put up with myself let alone 30 MF's. Coaching women at least they listened once in a damn while and let you coach them. Thus why tolerable. Female would have to be cray cray to tolerate the flack men's D1 players and ego's would throw at her. Maybe someday.

Side Ish: Roberts at SIU word on the street he's getting re-instated. ULM coach says he's deciding to resign or not, family doesn't like the area, so we'll see. And applicants for women's D1 jobs, the five I've been privy to knowing applicant pool for recently has about 85 percent male applicants. One of them, out of 225 applicants, only 36 females applied, and of those., none had D1 head coaching experience, not one. But males, about three dozen had D1 head experience. The female applicants, JC coaches, a handful of D2 head coaches, and then second assistants for D1 level. Nobody with experience. So who did they hire? You guessed it, a female. Lol. Oh well, she was there four years then pushed out. Happy Turkey Day soon

To be fair....the only way these women are going to get d1 head coaching experience is for someone to hire them in the first place. The reason the men have had d1 experience is because someone hired them, and the first time they were hired to be a head coach they also had no head coaching experience as a d1 coach.

Let’s be honest. Most people are hired (male or female) because of connections they have. All the time you see someone make the jump from D3 to D1 or D2 to D1 or 2nd Asst to a good head job. It’s more who you know than gender and/or experience. It’s that way in other professions as well. People like to work with those they are comfortable with. Not saying it is good or bad. Just reality.

    Full
Fully agree with all that but when Footyballs is saying that the women had no experience and the men did, I was pointing out that the only way they got experience was someone taking a chance on them. You haave to be given an opportunity to gain experience as a d1 head coach in order to have said experience.

Well at least they didn't promote their assistants to head coach again for the third/fourth time in a row. Break the cycle, start fresh, see what she can do.

I wonder why he left - seemed program was moving in the right direction, doubt they will get anyone as good to take that team.

He didn’t leave he was fired. A lot of players went to the AD about him, but many people on here will tell you Fraser got the karma he deserved.

He resigned. Was offered an extension, but rejected it. It’s not hard to see that there’s not tons of positives going on at ULM in the whole athletic department.

Do you think they’d want to pay a coach who’s done more than any other program in just a short amount of time? Nope. Especially when they’re paying a HUGE contract to football and getting nothing in return.

He was forced to resign otherwise he would have been fired. He was suspended by ULM administration for the last 3 or 4 games of the season. He was never offered an extension.

No forced resignation. Extension was offered. Quit with the lies. It’s obvious you have an ax to grind.

Did you lose the job to him? How many times did his team beat yours? There’s more people on here who care about ULM soccer in the last three years than anyone at the school has cared since the program started. Weird.

Correct he was forced to resign according to others in the conference. I was also told by another coach in that conference that the administration suspended him and he wasn’t around for the last games.
