So if they hire female again, they can expect the same results? C'mon, get out of here.

Dude, admins do it all the time with male coaches who coach a female sport and are fired.

Fire a male coach and the majority of the time are replaced by a female coach.

My AD asks me all the time, if I was to leave can I draw him up a list of female candidates he should look at.

Administrations need to focus more on finding good coaches (meaning genuine good people) and stay away from trying to hire a gender.

Ok, let's actually look at facts instead of just anecdotes. I use the term fired loosely. I only made it through the first dozen or so hires from last years cycle, but the pattern would not support your statement.

UK - fired male, hired male
Georgia - fired male, hired male
Villanova - fired male, hired female
USC Upstate - fired male, hired male
Maryland - fired male, hired female
Oral Roberts - fired (?) male, hired male
Colorado College - fired (?) male, hired female

Illinois state- fired male, hired female
    Florida same
Hempen out at Colorado state who were specific in their goal to hire a female only was one of the more brazen examples as it wasn’t really a secret

I agree the best person should get the job regardless but that’s not the way athletics work these days.

The search firm being employed by NAU is run by a guy whose wife is HC at Emory, ironically enough. He has helped with a few other woso hires (not always female hires, btw) and some admin hires at d1/d2 level.

And Southern Illinois fired male and hired male, and that worked out great for them. I can't stand when people make broad generalizations without any evidence, and then when the evidence actually shows the generalization to be inaccurate, they double down.

How many female coaches have been let go and hired a male coach? Usually Title IX numbers dictate the hire. I think it’s probably safe to say that all things being equal, the preference is to hire a female coach for a female sport, especially with the lack of females coaching male sports.

It’s pretty well known Colorado state were openly hiring a female it is not a broad generalization. Hiring the best person regardless of gender would be the better way to go in my opinion.
SIU if you were to just look at the scores you would think it’s a great hire but while we don’t know exactly what happened off the field there Roberts reputation proceeds him and based on the suspension they must have something pretty substantial that happened.

Just a quick glance on east coast hires over the last couple of years.

    Patriot
    Holy Cross. Male to male
    Lehigh. Male to female
    BU. Female to female
    Colgate. Female to female

    Ivy
    Brown. Male to female
    Yale. Male to female
    Cornel. Male to male
    Penn. Female to female

    MAAC
Mount St Marys. Female to female
    St Peter’s. Female to female

    NEC
St Francis PA. Female to female
    LIU. Male to male

    A10
    Fordham. Female to male

If you go back a bit further, Princeton in the Ivy, Iona in the MAAC and Sacred Heart in the NEC all went from a female to a male. But that is going back several years. Not many instances of that recently. This is just a small sample of course, but in my experience as an administrator it was unusual to replace a female with a male due to Title IX considerations covering the makeup of the department as a whole. Much easier to hire a male to replace a male because they’ve likely met requirements in the department—UNLESS the makeup of the department had changed since that person was hired.

One can say whatever one wants, but the facts are that over roughly the last 20 years, males overall have gained 25 head coaching positions and females have gained 8.

Yes, since 2021 females have gained 8 positions (thus having been at the same number in 2021 as they were in 2004) and males are down 15 positions (from the 241 they held in 2021, which was an increase of 40 positions since 2004). Is this worthy of complaints, especially given the larger historic context?

Meanwhile, in mens D1 soccer, male coaches have gained 7 positions since 2004
While the female coach total has held steady at 0.

I assume that all seven of those positions gained were due to programs adding men’s soccer, a rarity, or programs moving to D1 from a lower division. I doubt that we will see a woman coaching a D1 program any time soon.

Worth noting is that there are two women coaches coaching men’s teams at the D3 level. They are the only two women that I am aware of that are coaching men’s NCAA soccer in any division. Kim Wyant is at NYU & Julianne Sitch is at U of Chicago. Chicago is in the final 4.

It APPEARS as though the last couple of years has trended towards hiring female coaches. No one is saying that’s a bad thing unless I missed a post. But you of all people should know that stats can tell whatever story you like. Unless you have a complete picture, it is difficult to see.

For example, it isn’t just about the breakdown of male to female head coaches. It’s about how many female coaches are applying for those jobs. Beyond that, you’d need to see the experience of the applicants. Unless you have access to that information (no one does except each individual school), it’s impossible to complain in either direction.

I’ve led a few searches in my day, and I can tell you from the administrative side it isn’t as easy as some people make it out to be. People assume that an equal number of female coaches apply as males. And then assume that all are equal in experience. That is not always the case. Maybe the ratio of coaches matches the applicant pool? The point is, you don’t know, so it is counterproductive for people to complain and that goes in both directions.

I am curious at what programs the other three coaches are that Cliveworshipper is referring to.
Are those net gains? If so, programs such as Hartwick would need to be accounted for since that school went from D1 to D3 in 2018, I believe.

Recently there has been a trend that some hires have been a female or bust mentality which is unfortunate as it should be the best person for the job.

Now is a good time to remind everyone there’s a separate thread on this.

Or can we at least wait until purportedly unqualified people are hired before we get all worked up about this? Good grief. One little rumor that a place may want to hire female only and everyone is worked up into a tizzy!
