Translated from the original Italian: "We finished 13th, which is not last. I feel like my job here is done."
I think some people don't realize how terrible the pitches became in winter in England back in those days. Modern-era players are used to practically golf-green perfection to ply their trade.
I heard from a lot of old timers that was how the English long ball was invented. The fields were just too soggy or muddy to keep dribbling and that is why they came up with crosses and long passes. Recalling the British-Irish invasion in the NASL of the 1970's and the many English, Scottish , Irish and Welsh players who played in that old league, there wasn't much long ball. Mostly because there were a lot of Yugoslavs who played a different style and the games were played on turf , baseball , American football fields or during the spring-summer months.
When I was taking soccer history in college it did not occur to me that formations may have been practically driven (due to field conditions or what not). In the soccer stone age the formation du juor was 1 goalie, 1 defender and 9 attackers... offside was created because of that.
How about Peterson fields in Sunnyvale before they turned it into a farm. I'll bet the crops there got plenty of nourishment from the blood and skin I left there!
Also the weather conditions of a particular geographic region. Great Britain cold and rainy so a lot of long balls and running kept you warmer!. In the Latin countries with the heat and humidity more short passing and letting the ball do the work.
Posting this in Other Teams because it mostly excludes Quakes. Jackson Yueill did get third place for best dressed though. We asked, and the players answered. The #PlayerVoicesPoll is back for 2022! Stay tuned this week to learn what players really think when it comes to best home field advantage, the most underrated player in MLS and more. 📊 🧵 pic.twitter.com/rwddBmSg7z— MLSPA (@MLSPA) November 14, 2022
Hey @JazzyJ The guy who took Monterio's job in Philly has the hardest shot in MLS according to every player in the league.
This probably helps the Quakes more than any signings we're likely to make. BREAKING: Atlanta United have appointed Garth Lagerwey club president & CEO.Lagerwey spent the last eight years with the Seattle Sounders. Was with Real Salt Lake before that.He led the 1st MLS team to win Concacaf Champions League; Won 3 MLS Cups, made 3 more Cups & more. pic.twitter.com/N5XpmUKCdH— Tom Bogert (@tombogert) November 22, 2022
Exactly. Seattle peaked with the CCL Cup. Their downward spiral is accelerating. This helps the Quakes without us having to even do anything.
I can't believe Garth Lagerway left SEA. I thought the fans just re-elected him, i.e. a vote of confidence. I predict SEA will fall apart pretty quickly. But does Lagerway going to ATL mean that Carlos Bocanegra is going to be out of a job soon?
Yeah Garth did a fantastic job at Seattle. However Seattle has an aging fragile roster that is past its prime. If they can get their starting 11 healthy for the vast majority of next season they should still be OK, but that is a big IF. I really doubt Garth would leave Seattle if he truly thought Seattle was in position to have a successful 2023 and beyond. When the season ended I was wondering what Seattle would do this offseason. Finding a new GM is probably the last thing they wanted to do.
Garth likes picking up projects, he will do good things with a bigger check book in Atlanta and a crowd thats even louder than Seattle. Craig Waibel is probably going to reclaim the job I'd imagine.
Wow, Japan. Apparently they are for real and their beatdown of the US in the friendly / tune up was not entirely a fluke.
again, ambition doesn't mean you win every year, it means you're trying, you're investing the resources needed to give your team a chance. fans appreciate it. players, FO staff, coaches...all appreciate it. communities appreciate it! ticket reps appreciate it. Quakes need to find some, desperately. clocks ticking on this offseason. we've got a lot of catching up to do. 2023 will be here in no time. it's time for a little progress in San Jose. $27 sit anywhere tickets are fine and all but I'd rather pay a little more and have a team in San Jose we can be proud of.
Atlanta failed to qualify for playoffs two of the last three years. They have played six seasons in their entire history. By the way, how 'bout them Falcons!
The San Jose Earthquakes of 2001-2005, the San Francisco 49ers of 1981-1998 and the Golden State Warriors of 2015-present were/are like that: while they didn't make it to their respective league championships every single year, they were nearly always realistic contenders to reach and win them. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
