Strzoks book is excellent on this.

The whole point is that Comey concluded his investigation in July in order to meet the DOJ convention.

The problem was he did a public press conference, and then when the Trumpers got hold of the FBI leak he was forced into saying stuff in the home stretch.

He should never have said anything in July.

But also, there probably was no good solution to this.

But it also points out that institutionalists in govt (mostly men, of course) thought "sure he's a corrupt, racist, unworthy husk of a human being who's likely in bed with Putin, BUT HILLARY HAD LOTSA EMAILS and that's just as bad, people"

The leaky NYC FBI office was in cahoots with Rudy & this article says it was "Trumplandia" (are they reading my posts?)

The currently serving FBI agent said Clinton is “the antichrist personified to a large swath of FBI personnel,” and that “the reason why they’re leaking is they’re pro-Trump.”

The agent called the bureau “Trumplandia”, with some colleagues openly discussing voting for a GOP nominee who has garnered unprecedented condemnation from the party’s national security wing and who has pledged to jail Clinton if elected

There are lots of people who don’t think Trump is qualified, but also believe Clinton is corrupt. What you hear a lot is that it’s a bad choice, between an incompetent and a corrupt politician,” said a former FBI official.

Sources who disputed the depth of Trump’s internal support agreed that the FBI is now in parlous political territory. Justice department officials – another current target of FBI dissatisfaction – have said the bureau disregarded longstanding rules against perceived or actual electoral interference (See SuperDave?) when Comey wrote to Congress to say it was reviewing newly discovered emails relating to Clinton’s personal server.

Yeah, one of the weirdest things to emerge from this whole thing is that the FBI is now a villain for GOPs, when they're the ones who put their boy in office.

    Well what a surprise.

Fact-checker: Trump was ‘just making it up’ with Friday night speech

Berman reported, "as you can tell, it was the usual type of response. The exact type of response you might expect from the former president. That was just a small sampling, it went on and on and on and on, and much of what he was saying was misleading, some of it was flat-out untrue."

What he meant to say was “He’s a fkn LIAR”

    He would just deny it.

Then say there is nothing wrong with having pants on fire.

Then say that Obama's are on fire as well.

Then would set fire to everyone else's pants.

Yeah - if the FBI had kept things quieter, Rudy and his pals would have just leaked stuff and claimed a coverup, with the cooperation of people like Jason Chaffetz. And the media would likely have gone along with their narrative, just as they obediently amplified the last-minute laptop non-story.

Comey may have erred, but it's hard to make good choices when all of your options seem bad. I think that the only genuine solution would have been for the media to let go of its insanely outsized fixation on Hillary's emails.

Bill Barr going on TV to say that Trump can be legitimately indicted is an interesting development. Obviously, the MAGAs have already decided that Barr is a traitor to the cause. But having Trump's AG support a prosecution is going to make the "partisan vendetta" claim less plausible to all but the true believers.

I suspect that Barr's willingness to defend the DOJ is intended as a signal to other Republicans that they should ditch Trump, or at least not rush to his defense. When a well connected GOP insider vouches for the investigation, one of the possible implications is that the stuff under the black marker in the released DOJ documents is not the kind of thing that you'll want to associate your political party with.

I think Bill Barr said it because of the election.

Absolutely - there's no doubt that Barr is emboldened by the electoral failure of Trump's pro-coup slate. But he was also publicly knocking down Trump's absurd arguments about declassification back in September, when a MAGA midterm win seemed like a live possibility.

Then and now, I think Barr's trying to convince the Republican establishment that the path of least resistance (tolerating and humoring Trump) is going to get worse for them as the investigation progresses. Whether the GOP is even capable of heeding that warning is an open question.

Nonsense-- he would ask the Secret Service, then Rudy, then Russia if they're listening, then the Proud Boys to ignite everyone else's pants-- then blame antifa and the Rinos for putting them out.

The special counsel should bring in Trump for questioning, then waterboard him and tie his ass to a chair and tase the shit out of him until he strokes out.

But before he does, he just needs to bitch slap him and tell him that after he's done, they're going to round up his entire family and drop them in a pit to rid the planet of his DNA once and for all.

All of this should be live streamed, BTW. You now how much Trump loves ratings.
