Quick note about contest deadline: The Clemson v Vanderbilt game, currently first to start, starts at 3:00 pm (not noon) on the East Coast, so that is the deadline for entries. There may be some time changes due to weather. If I see any starting earlier than 3:00 pm EST, I will post here. PS - We are up to 18 human entries, and it only is Wednesday.
It always bugs me and I've never asked, but why don't we name the regions? Is it because the NCAA didn't want to dilute March Madness, Sweet 16 and East Region as component brand names of the men's basketball championships?

So, at least in one region, we've got a 2nd-round game next Friday--followed by a 3rd-round game on Sunday How is it it fair--or logically--to give teams one day of rest between the 2nd and 3rd round? Why wouldn't you play the 2nd-round games on Thursday? Even worse, a lower-seeded team could travel to an away site for a 2nd-round game--then travel again---on its supposed rest day!--to an away 3rd-round site. That is completely unfair.
The 2nd and 3rd round will be at the same site for a team. 4 teams will go to one site (whoever is the highest seed) hosts all 4 teams.
I’ve often wondered the same thing. As a matter of fact, when I made that post, I looked at a bracket to see a region name and when I didn’t see one, I wrote “lower left.”
Perhaps a reason for not using the region designation is that after the first round the sites technically are not pre-set, whereas I believe they are in basketball. The second-third round games are played at the site of the best seeded team still standing in the particular group of four so that it depends on whether the best seeded team (of the initial group of 8) wins in the first round to see if that is where the second and third round games will be played. The same process applies to the quarterfinals. Other than the assigned first round sites, only the semis and finals are certain to be at a pre-determined site. It is rare for the sites not to simply follow the seeds, but it does happen occasionally because of upsets. Sometimes, I have heard of the bracket quadrants referred to by the names of the #1 seeds in the quadrants.

Soccerhunter Well, once again, I don't feel ready for the battle to be absolutely dispassionate and post all of the winners based on data and logic -- or instead to remain a 40 year loyal fan and pick my favorite team to somehow rise to the occasion and play their best for 6 games and pull it out. (And, hey, I have no problems at all through the first three rounds, but then it gets real sticky...) Probably only the FSU (and possibly the UCLA) fans don't have this nagging inner battle. Enjoy! Good luck to all. Have not been paying as much attention to the college game this season so I'm going with the team I picked at the beginning of the season to win it all. Right now, we are 21 games in and already with 4 upsets, based on the Committee seeding. That is more upsets than the win-loss probabilities indicated for the entire first round.
Here are the scores and standings following the first round Saturday games, with 3 first round games yet to be played on tomorrow (Sunday):
I am s@#$&* I picked USC to go to the final. Also I am glad that Portland won, even though I picked ASU.
Us Bruins know how it feels getting upset by UC Irvine in the first round. It completely screwed up my predictions last year going forward. Even this year after USC put in a perfect performance beating UCLA last week, I thought for sure they would go far in the tournament.
Here are the standings at the end of Round 1. Justdoit is alone in first place. Looking at the prediction contest history, I note that justdoit has competed in the past and has not been a winner but usually has done pretty well.
Here the standings after completion of the games today at North Carolina. Some correctly picked BYU over Notre Dame and it shows in the standings:
