Steve Zungul, Clive Charles, Chico Borja and Shep Messing are the only 4 candidates with NASL or MISL affiliations remaining in the final ballot for the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame's Class of 2023. Zungul, Borja and Messing are included in the Veteran Ballot, while Charles is in the Builder Ballot. The Hall of Fame Voting Committees will meet over the next several weeks and then vote to select a maximum of six new members; as many as three Players and two Veterans can https://www.nationalsoccerhof.com/.../2023-national...

NASL Quotes: "“Somewhere in America is the 10, 11, 12-year-old who is going to be the Joe Namath of American Soccer at the end of the next dramatic decade. We are going to find him … that boy and hundreds more like him as this game grows." - Phil Woosnam, NASL Commissioner, predicting a bright future for American soccer.

I never cared for the color scheme but always liked the Los Angeles Aztecs name and logo.

Too bad LAFC or the Gals never thought of using it.....

Maybe they did think about it...but thought it a stupid name since the Aztec empire never made it into what is now southern California.

NASL Dateline: On 14 September 1977, the New York Cosmos defeated the Japanese National Team, 3-1, before 65,000 at Tokyo Stadium in Game 4 of the Pelé Farewell Tour, a 13-match marathon across Asia, the Caribbean, South America and the USA. Here, Pelé exchanges jerseys with Japanese star Kunishege Kamamoto and waves to the largest crowd ever to see a soccer game in Japan.

NASL Dateline: On 24 September 1980, the New York Cosmos bid farewell to superstar Franz Beckenbauer after a 4-year NASL stay that included 3 Soccer Bowl titles and the 1977 MVP Award with an exhibition match against an NASL Select Team. Pelé and Roberto Cabanas scored for New York, but the NASL Selects got goals from Jomo Sono, Teófilo Cubillas and Karl-Heinz Granitza and won, 3-2, before 71,413 at Giants Stadium.

Soccer in the 1970s: New York Cosmos star Pelé featured in a 1976 issue of Children's Digest magazine.

NASL Action: New York Cosmos forward Pelé looks for an opening between Chicago Sting defender Clive Griffiths and midfielder Jimmy Kelly at Yankee Stadium.

NASL Fans: Pelé / San Jose Earthquakes summer camp.

I believe this was at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds.

NASL Dateline: On 13 September 1980, Giorgio Chinaglia's hat trick was all the New York Cosmos needed to ease past the Los Angeles Aztecs, 3-1, and clinch a return to the Soccer Bowl final in Game 2 of the Conference Championship of the NASL Playoffs before 42,324 at Giants Stadium.

Did You Know? The Team America "Goal" lights only flashed 33 times in the 1983 NASL season, lowest in the league that year and the least recorded since 1981.

Soccer in the 1970s: Newly signed New York Cosmos star Franz Beckenbauer is welcomed at Kennedy Airport in 1977 by adoring fans, including 12-year old - and future U.S. National Team captain and MISL star - Mike Windischmann, pictured at far left.

Ha! My favorite Adidas cleats back in the 70's were Gerd Müller signature cleats. My brother and I used to watch "Soccer Made in Germany" back then and that's why I bought em'! :D

Happy 73rd birthday to Les Chapman, the veteran English midfielder who scored 20 goals in 263 appearances for Oldham Athletic, and jumped to the NASL in 1978 where he played in 20 games for the San Jose Earthquakes.

Happy 65th birthday to Canada international Tino Lettieri, the high-flying goalkeeper who made headlines with his stuffed parrot, Ozzie, and fashioned a 10-year pro career that began with the Minnesota Kicks at 19 in 1977 and ended with the Minnesota Strikers indoors in 1987 and included 36 NASL shutouts, 1 all-NASL selection and the 1983 NASL North American Player of the Year Award, the 1987 Goalkeeper of the Year Award in the MISL, 2 MISL All Star teams, and appearances for Canada in the 1976 and 1984 Olympic Games and the 1986 FIFA World Cup.

Did You Know? Golden Bay Earthquakes forward Steve Zungul scored 16 goals in 1983, but he also set the NASL record for missed penalty kicks that season when he whiffed on 3 attempts.

Happy 77th birthday to Scotland international goalkeeper Bobby Clark, the Aberdeen bedrock who helped the Dons win the Scottish Cup (1970), the League Cup (1977) and the Premier League title (1980) in addition to playing in the 1978 FIFA World Cup, then joined the San Antonio Thunder on loan in 1976 and posted 4 shutouts in 19 games, and ultimately served as head coach of Stanford University (1996-2000) and Notre Dame (2001-2017), leading the Fighting Irish to the NCAA title in 2013.

NASL Dateline: On 26 September 1981, the Chicago Sting and New York Cosmos played 105 minutes of scoreless soccer and 4 rounds of a tense shootout before Rudy Glenn scored the go-ahead goal and goalkeeper Dieter Ferner blocked Robert Iarusci's final attempt to give Chicago a 1-0 win in Soccer Bowl '81. Sting defender Frantz Mathieu was named Man of the Match as Chicago captured the first title in franchise history - and the first for the City of Chicago since the Bears won the NFL Championship in 1963 - before 36,971 at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto.

NASL National Team: Willy Roy, USA

ASL Dateline: On 25 September 1979, the ASL granted an expansion franchise to Phoenix to be operated by an ownership group headed by insurance broker Leonard Lesser. The team announced that former Seattle Sounders coach Jim Gabriel would coach the club, and games would be played at Phoenix College's Hoy Stadium.

NASL Dateline: On 25 September 1979, the Tampa Bay Rowdies slapped a $175,000 price tag on striker Oscar Fabbiani to permit him to return on loan to Palestino of Chile for 3 months of the NASL off-season, but Palestino officials turned down the offer as too high. The Argentina-born Fabbiani attempted to intervene and asked Tampa Bay to lower the price as he wanted to spend more time in Chile and gain his citizenship, but they refused. "I would like to wear the Palestino shirt again," Fabbiani said. "I want to become a Chilean citizen not only because I want to play on Chile's national team, but I feel like a Chilean and my children are born there. In Argentina, they are only now beginning to take note of me."
