I thought they did a good job analyzing the game. Especially, the former players when they have them in studio with the exception of Lawless when he's around. Man likes to hear himself talk.
I liked Scurry and Aly. The UNLV coach seemed overly into Sanchez and she did not do anything that game. The other two were both complimentary and critical of players. They did not just throw sunshine. Kyle was fine too. I enjoyed listening to them over all.
Sinclair will be phased in. CWNT: Bev Priestman says Sinclair will get minutes tonight, but it's a massive tournament for Jordyn Huitema. Bound for more playing time in the NWSL, she's got a chance to solidify her status as Canada's go-to over the next couple weeks. Really hope she can score a few.— Ben Steiner (@BenSteiner00) July 5, 2022
I just don't understand how this is debatable at all and isn't a clear Red to everyone. Very high boot that missed KO's face by inches. Rakes down her arm and side and kicks her with plenty of force, well above the waist. It was extremely dangerous and reckless.
It looked to me like she gave a deliberate quick little push with her foot into O'Hara's side for good measure just before pulling her boot away. It's absurd to me that was not ruled a straight red.
I agree it should have been a red, but I just want to help everyone here with using the actual language that determines a red. "Reckless" is a yellow. "With excessive force" and/or endangering the safety of the player is a red. That's why you heard Unkel talking about the leg getting pulled back as an argument against "excessive force" because there's an argument that the Haitian player was trying to use less force. Anyway, that is supposed to be the line for a red card, but the line on this decision makes it seem that the player actually would have had to kick O'Hara in the face/head to get a red. In any case, I stand by my original opinion. Yellow would have been understandable if given live; we would have debated it, but I would have understood it. I just hate that the red card was given, and then VAR thought that was a clear and obvious error and sent it down. Also I think it was the commentators of the game who were trying to give a pass to the referees as the first time they were using VAR. That may be true for some of the referees at the tournament, and they all definitely get less experience as we know woso leagues don't use VAR. But, it's not true for this game. The referee was Beaudoin who refereed at the 2019 WWC, and the VAR was Chenard who obviously is a PRO VAR.
That is why all VAR reviews and decisions in International Women's Matches should be referred to the newly formed Global Women's VAR Committee for final rulings. The GWVARC has only one member and that individual is MMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. If at home, FIFA bears the responsibility to beam the Match to my humble abode. If I'm at the Match, they can send the video for review to my fancy phone and I'll wear one of those McDonalds Drive Thru headsets to communicate with the on-field referee. WIN-WIN-WIN
many thanks to the many replies, as now i can see where I can buy ESPN+ for 7.99 a month. My only problem now is if there's enough cloud space on my Fire Sitck to handle an giant size site like ESPN! And sad news that FIFA player of the year, Alexis Putellas got an ACL during practice, thus probably eliminating Spain as one of the favorites. --------------------------------------- here's highlights of the Jamaca/Mexico match, Does look like Jamaca's speed takes over. this one. Their star striker, Bunny Shaw, comes in with a lot of creds including leading scorer of the French League in 2020-21. But now looks like they got an double edge in swift countering with the emergence of 20 year old Jody Brown(lshe plays for the U of Florida Seminoles. Jamaca's soter includes 4 NWSL, 4 Div one college, 7 English league(though some in their 2nd divison) 2 Swedish league players(fairly decent squad that deserves to make it to the WC). I felt like Mexico was going to be overrated, as their so called 'pro' domestic league was over hyped as well. The big crowds predicted didn't happen either. Unfortunately they can't seem to devolope star players(got the feeling Haiti with their 18 wunderkind, might just beat them too, thus eliminating for any chance in making the WC)
actual got to start & play for 60 mins,in Canada's 6-0 win vs T&T last nite. Canada playing some great, clinical soccer, but that's more cuz T&T probably the worst team in this tourney. Wonder why .Nichele Prince, didn't play in this match(Injury perhaps? as they surely would need her to match up with the US
For the most remarkable performance thus far in this tournament I nominate Jordan Angeli. She has done the play by play with no color commentator for every match I have tuned into. She lacks the dulcet, plummy voice of the typical announcer, and she's butchered more than a few names, but, my God, she's had to remember the names and numbers of hundreds of players. That's a feat of memory and recall that deserves recognition. Moreover she knows the game -- and she's gotten better at this announcing business with each match. I hope they're paying you well, Jordan. You've got the toughest job in Concacaf.
I should warn you that ESPN3 is *not* generally included in the ESPN+ package. 3 is tied to your cable package. They changed this a couple of years ago & it's frustrating to see games on the menu that you can't access.
You are mixing terms. The red card was "checked" by the VAR because all red cards (as well as goals and PKs) are "checked" by the VAR. Following the check, the VAR recommended an "on field review" (an OFR) by the referee because the VAR believed that the red card was a clear and obvious error by the referee and the referee agreed to conduct the on field review. "Sent down" is usually used to describe the recommendation form the VAR to the R that the R conduct an OFR--"down" because, at least initially, the VAR sat in a box in the stadium and the R was down on the field.
I only used 'sent down' because the posters that had questions about why VAR was checking it used that term. Hence, the quotation marks.
The post I think you are talking about used "sent down" properly. The question raised wasn't about why the VAR checked, but about why the VAR sent it down to the R, which are completely different things. All red cards are checked by the VAR; all red cards are not sent down to the R by the VAR--they are only sent down if the VAR believes there was a C&O error.
Horan and Naeher expected to start in the next game, but there will be rotation in the lineup: More #USWNT lineup notes from Vlatko: Horan will start vs. Jamaica and is 100% physically. Says that 11 v Haiti will play a lot this tournament, but there is predetermined rotation for game two to account for heat and short turnaround.— Jeff Kassouf (@JeffKassouf) July 6, 2022
Because she is a physical presence in the midfield with lots of skill. If Ertz can't be there, Horan should be.
Sherlock Holmes said something to Watson once to the effect that you listen but you do not hear. I get the impression that you watch but you do not see, at least when it comes to defense. Horan had a good game. A great habit (that has served me well anyway) is to rewatch a game, but only watch one player or one aspect and ignore all the other stuff I already saw.. It is a great way to figure out not only what happened and why, but also why what didn't happen didn't. And also to figure out what Vlatko is asking of specific people and what he is trying to get done. Watch Horan-- you'll see what she did.
A nicked up (knee) slowish Horan isn't the person you want at the 6. Not the 6. Player her up field is fine, where she is crafty and pass well. Get someone who can handle the speed of the Jamaican offensive players, not be left in the dust. If they need to rest Sullivan, then go K. Mewis. Edit: Didn't I see Horan go down holding her knee during the Haiti game? Could have been a ruse to get a ref call but I wonder how she is feeling. We will find out shortly. That's my 2c.
Lack of speed may be the Achilles' heel of our defense. I don't know how fast Cook is, but I think Fox is the only truly speedy back line player we have. Lavelle and Sanchez are the only fast midfielders. Our front line is reasonably fast.
Sanchez is quick but not fast over distance. She can’t go box to box. I watched Horan closely because I was trying to learn about her style of play, and I did not see anything special from her. The post game analysts also agreed that Horan was not playing well. In fact both Instat and Aly Wagner, etc, showed/thought Mewis performed well and that Horan did not.
