It was comfortable, but certainly not impressive. If you watch the Euros this week, I think you’ll see a half dozen teams capable of topping that performance. Missing Macario, Mewis, Dunn…but maybe we’re just seeing some regression to the mean for the US.

A 3-0 win is a good result; this is not last century's Haiti. Bigger, faster, stronger, more skilled and much better coached. I think they'll top Mexico. We're not deteriorating, the mean is rising. Which is and always was predictable. But I never, at any point felt that Haiti might win.

As the world puts money and effort into the women's game, it will get to be more and more like soccer and less and less like pinball. We need as spectators to be accepting of 3-0 wins as good things.

I thought O'Hara had a great game although she was slowed and hobbled some after the foul. (I remember Mike Bradley being red carded just for showing his studs on a tackle, one which stayed entirely below the knee...)

    Purce, Pinoe, Sanchez.
"Some fellas look at the eyes
Some fellas look at the nose
Some fellas look at the size
Some fellas look at the clothes...
First I look at the Purce!"
    (Rogers/Robinson)

    And of course, Morgan.
    "And if you'll see Andmorgan
    Then you will know Andmorgan
For you can see you in her eyes
Then you feel your heart beating
    Thrum-pum-pum-pum"

It’s same old Vlatko, taking the tempo or pace down an notch or two, so that in his mind, the team wouldn’t get exhausted over the 5 game tournament, since he’s probably not going to switch the starting lineup much, even though our 11 subs could easily win this tournament as well(well cept against Canada)

I wouldn’t call Haiti “pathetic”, several play in the French league(which had one team win the all important Champions League) plus at least four were rostered on Div 1 colleges. Probably quite a few were American born as well; their GK was noted as born & raised in Boca Raton, Fl. Shame they got to play in this group, which looks way tougher than Canada’s group, otherwise I think they might be good enough to qualify for the WC. Their one 18 year old named Dumeray(or something close like it) been probably the best performing player the US faced all year
wish I knew how to watch all the Euro games, the previous free ESPN 3 website has now become an complicated mess, especially when trying to watch it on my Smart TV. Any link on the easiest way to buy into ESPN 3?

Any Canadians fans out here? Did the previous announced preparation games vs Australia ever happen?(don’t see them listed anywhere). So if not and no warm ups , taking it then Canada’s confident that’s it’s going to qualify for the WC & not taking the presumed CA/US final too seriously

I never felt Haiti might win but for the last 10 minutes of the 1st half, I thought they had a chance to get out of the game with a tie.

I think Haiti is more skilled than they used to be, but the US still has them beat there. But, they did have some players who beat out some of our players on athleticism. A few were able to out pace our "fast" players.

Certainly makes the next game more interesting.

Thought the team looked pretty flat footed against a low ranked side. Haiti has certainly progressed though, and has a couple very good players. Particularly that #6 must be on the radar of some good clubs. These teams need to learn how to convert penalties against the US. I feel like we have gotten out of so many potentially bad situations (v England, Netherlands etc) because players get psyched out and botch penalties against us. The intimidation factor of solo in goal is gone, no excuses. Not convinced Murphy is better than Naeher at this stage. She has had a rough year for club. I think she is getting chances based on her success against Australia.

lack of depth at certain positions is a huge problem. Particularly outside back and the defensive midfield role. I fear for Horan’s long term health, it’s like the staff learned nothing from the Julie ertz situation in Tokyo.

Morgan had a pretty good game, although still cannot stay onside. Even her first goal looked slightly off to me but wasn’t called. Her inability to dribble or create her own shot is still a problem against better sides. I think the team misses the creativity of macario as a false 9. She interchanges very well with Pugh and smith, who look much more dangerous and comfortable playing with her than they do playing with Morgan, who can really only function as a poacher or target for crosses. She forces those two to stay wide when their natural tendency is to play narrower and cut in. Macario tends to both provide service from the middle and can dribble up the flank, allowing smith/Pugh/Lavelle/Sanchez to move closer to goal regularly. It makes for a more dynamic attacking unit compared to when Morgan or Hatch is playing.

I honestly think a third of her career goals are botched offside calls. There was a goal she scored a couple weeks ago in the Nwsl where she made a long run clearly offside for the entire play, to the point where it was absolutely comical, and it somehow wasn’t called.

Let's hope all the injured and maternity leave kids come back 100%. Will go a long way to depth concerns. As long as this edition can get us there.

I do sub to ESPN3 and I also have to say that the ESPN app is quite horrible but I like it better on my Roku. I have discovered that if I go into the app and the do a search for the exact phrase that will limit the responses. Use a phrase like "Women soccer Euro" or some sort and ESPN's search engine will find matches. It can be a little hard, at times, to tell exactly which item is the match wanted but the choices are at least few at that point. If you think ESPN3 is bad you should see Peacock. That is a real mess.

My real complaint about ESPN3 is that they, more than any other service, have feeds that join the match late even when the same match is available live on their actual TV channels. That is the match can be watched live on cable TV from the start but the tech in charge seems to have exhausted themselves and are too tired to throw the switch to share the feed with their app. Sometime later, after the tech rests for a while, he/she will throw the switch and the feed finally goes live.

In the case above I usually prefer the cable channel to watch but, sometimes, it is better to watch the ESPN app.
For the Women's Euros it appears that a rather huge number will be actually available directly on ESPN cable feed and some of the best matches are going to be live carried through cable.

If you sign up for ESPN alone or as part of that Hulu, Disney, ESPN bundle, your TV should let you log in and view the games. Looks like they are going to play one game a day on ESPN2 as well. I have them set to record from the 6th through like the 17th.

I'm not sure that this that much of an upset. Despite the turmoil in Jamaica (the whole senior team asked for their previous coach to be sacked, the fed refused, but he stepped down after it seems that a bunch of them wouldn't play the qualifiers with him in charge), they have a lot of players playing in England, and Shaw is a world class forward which Mexico doesn't have. It wouldn't surprise me if she scored against the US.

Watching the U.S./Haiti and the Mexico/Jamaica matches I am more persuaded than ever that VAR does not improve the decisions made on the field.

I have found a little ESPN page that lists many/most of the soccer being played each day. It allows one to find what is on and you even get some TV info although that is incomplete.
I use the ESPN page to see what is on and then I try to find where I can watch it. This may be of some use for those, like myself, trying to find what might be available.

I do not know if it will work for everyone but I thought to give it a shot.

I thought the VAR was fine. I did not think a red card was necessary. She was going for the ball. To throw a player out, you are also throwing her out the next game. To me it would need to be intentionally malicious to force a team down a player at that point of the match. We were offsides on Morgan’s would be third goal, and VAR caught that (the officials missed it). VAR also picked up a hand ball (PK) in the Mexico game that the officials missed.

I don't know if it is all of them, but an awful lot of them are on the deuce (ESPN 2) if you have cable or satellite... I have eleven games scheduled to record between now and the 17th.

You do know that is not even close to the standard for serious foul play in the Laws of the Game?

This is what I thought, especially with all of the US pinging the ball around the back. Fans may not like it, but especially with this young group, they have to learn how to manage their way through a compressed tournament. That would make this a level higher of sophistication than US fans are used to. Of course, we could be wrong and they simply were sluggish, but I think you have the better explanation.

That is why I said, "to me". It is referees discretion. I would not have given a red.

While there are good arguments about whether it should be red or not, there is not wild discretion for referees to make up their own standards. A referee who said he didn't give a red because the foul was not "intentionally malicious" wouldn't be getting more games as that simply isn't the standard.

You may not like what the LOTG say and the guidance that goes with them, which is certainly fine. (I have plenty of things I think should be changed, too.) But under current Laws, intent is not even close to being a deciding factor in evaluating SFP. On the broadcast, Christine Unkel did a good job of describing the actual criteria that referees are supposed to use.

IMO this play comes down to one that reasonable minds can fall at either red or yellow. But since VAR intervention is supposed to be limited to clear and obvious errors, I don't think this should have been sent down by the VAR in either case, as neither a red nor yellow is a clear error on this particular play. (A bit slower and it would be clear it was a yellow; a bit faster or with any contact to the head, and it would be a clear red.)

Y'know that was about the most purposive "pinging the ball around the back" that I've ever seen. They knew what they were looking for downfield and they knew they had the right legs for the passes and runs-- and they made those passes and runs as soon as they saw what they were looking for. I'd been on the defense I'd have felt naked with Brunn and O'Hara and Fox looking me over like that all game long.

What did you folks think about the studio crew that analyzed the games at half time and afterwards?

I like all of them, especially Kaylyn Kyle.
