Peter Vy'landis, the head of the NRL and the Australian Rugby League Commission, is not shy about wanting to emulate what the NFL is to America with the NRL.

The biggest challenge the NRL has for growth is the shortage of first grade players. Are there enough NRL quality players available to sustain more teams? That remains to be seen. Also, they need a much better plan when it comes to expansion. The Dolphins as of right now will be a disaster on the field next season even with Wayne Bennett in charge.

I know it's not national, though it's more national than it was before it became NRL.

But the lower divisions are regional and semi-pro though the Brisbane League has one team from NSW and one from Papua New Guinea.

When NRL was formed they added Brisbane and merged some of the Sydney teams but that was 30+ years ago so it looks like they need another gimmick.

Super League in England proposed merging teams like the Hull sides, Widnes and Warrington and Castleford and Wakefield but the fans told them where to go.

Are the struggles of rugby union in Aus tempting players to switch codes?

Actually.....the NRL was formed in 1998 after the Supper League Wars.

Really? My memory is very faulty.

My experience of Aussie RL go back to the eighties when my friend used to get VHS tapes of Aussie league games featuring the likes of Mal Meninga, Wally Lewis and Peter Sterling.

Here's something that actually has something to do with the thread subject.

Mark Cartwright mentions pro/rel and winter soccer 23:30 into this interview.

The other big problem is expanding too much into areas where a rival code is very strong. The AFL arguably made a mistake in expanding to 18 teams, with a 2nd team in Sydney, and another not far from Brisbane. Over a decade in, both are still poorly supported.

The NFL, MLB and NBA (and to a fair extent MLS) have the good fortune that the popularity of their sport doesn't seem to be a regional thing.

Anyone notice that Serie A announced today that if there's a tie for the championship they'll no longer use head-to-head or goal differential to determine the champion, they'll do a one game playoff?

I think the sports in Oz developed regionally whereas the sports in the US developed on the east coast then expanded westward.

I swear they used to have that rule in the past. The game would be hosted by the team with superior goal difference. It'd be epic if it ever happened.

Yes between 1929 and 2005 but in 81 seasons it only happened once:

The only time a playoff was used to decide the champion occurred in the 1963–64 season

In England the top 2 teams have tied in points 5 times since 1888/89: 1923-24, 1949-59, 1952-53, 1964-65 and 1988-89

La Liga was last tied on points in 2005/06 and the Bundesliga in 1999/2000.

I'm still half-expecting the UCI to announce by the end of the season that relegation will be skipped this year due to COVID playing hell with racing time over the last 3 years (Cycling uses a 3 year total to determine relegation). It may depend on which team(s) is likely to be relegated.

Tbh is hard to follow which team is which anyway unless you're really into the sport.

Team Sky is now Ineos Grenadiers. Do any former Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas or Bradley Wiggins fans give a f**k about Ineos Grenadiers?

Even in Formula One people care about Ferrari or McCLaren, or teams called Lotus or Mercedes but does anyone care if Haas or Alpine get "relegated" to Formula 3?

It's worth noting that in the second half of the 19th century, when team sports were being codified and leagues were forming in the English-speaking world, Australia didn't exist as a unified political entity. The United States did.

As far as I can tell, Australia never had a true national league in any team sport until the National Soccer League in 1977. Prior to the creation of national leagues in the 70s and 80s, national championships in all sports were short tournaments contested by the winners of state leagues. (Note: the Australian Football League claims to have been founded in 1897, but it was the Victorian Football League until 1990 and first had a team outside Victoria in 1982 as a result of a club relocating out of the state.)

I watch the Tour (and the Giro d'Italia) because I like bike racing and seeing French/Italian places I've either visited or want to visit. I wouldn't say I was "really into the sport" but in multi-stage races like these, it really is a team sport despite honours being almost entirely individual.

While I agree the individual racers tend to have bigger followings than teams, there's still a bunch of team fans out there. Especially if the team has built an identity as to the type of race or racing they do. Sprint-heavy, climber-heavy, one-day classics, grand tours, etc. Personally I'm always rooting for EF as the one real American team (TREK is also U.S. registered, but has never leaned into their American roots like EF has).

EF is also one of the teams that's dancing along the edge of the relegation zone. Their results in June put them outside immediate danger but a poor Tour de France and they could be in real trouble if the other relegation favorites pick up points.

I didn’t need an extra dimension of relegation to enjoy the Tour de France but if it adds one that’s great. Still, I’m mostly there for the contenders and hoping for some good moments from American riders. I was so pumped for Sepp Kuss getting a stage win last year!

There were (and still are) State leagues for Aussie Rules, so it did have a claim as being a national game, if not a national competition. No idea why they didn't have a tournament for each league's winners. Maybe the VFL was just considered too strong.

The codifying of Aussie Rules predates the FA, being set up in 1859, although it was nearly 40 years before there was a league.

It is weird to think that a sport's premier competition in a nation the size of Australia was so densely concentrated until around 30 years ago, that for many fixtures it would be possible to walk to away games.

There was one. The VFL withdrew from it after the 1976 season and set up a rival tournament with only VFL teams, then other state leagues started defecting to the VFL's tournament two years later, which put the VFL in de facto control of the organizing the national championship.

The 1859 rules were close to the 1858 Sheffield Rules in England weren't they? I Melbourne FC is considered the oldest professional football team in the world.
