The US took care of business nicely 2-0 against a tough opponent. By beating Costa Rica they've now qualified for the U20WC.

Honduras beat a tough Panama team 2-1 in the other quarterfinal on our side of the bracket.

So its now the US versus the host Honduras for an Olympic berth.

US versus Honduras with the Olympics on the line isn't good for us historically.

By the way, the U20WC is in June of 2023. If I remember the calendar, it may conflict with the Nations League. So we'll have to decide which event the top U20s will attend.

I think it’s likely a player like Paredes would do the Nations League as opposed to the U20s. It’s just a question of how many guys fall into that category.

It'll be the same issue as 2021 with the senior team.

We have both the Nations League AND the Gold Cup.
Not many players will do both.
Now we definitely throw the U20WC into the mix too.
[Hopefully the U17WC too, and there are a couple of guys there who could be "promoted" to the U20s a year from now should we need to fill holes.]

Its rare that we've had a player go to the U20WC and the Gold Cup. Its happened, though. Adu and Bradley. If the U20 is at an MLS club, they won't want him to miss such a large chunk of the season by going to both.

It'll be interesting to see how things shake out. In 2021 we took the "A" team to the Nations League and some of the fringe/young players to the Gold Cup.

Send the kids to u20 WC. They play weak cocncacaf teams in 2024, 25, 26, 27, etc.

The experience of the tournament, being asked to play bigger roles, expectations to win, etc make for a much better developmental experience. The only time kids don't participate with their age group should be when the first really needs them or teams won't release.

The tweet said that Vargas needed time to "decompress mentally". You know, like Donovan did when he went on sabbatical.

Wait, you guys are comparing a coach sending a 16 yo home with a severe injury to what Donovan did?

German clubs generally don't release players for u20 as they are not required to do so.

No, I'm not comparing anyone. I'm responding to your "huh?" response to @dspence2311 saying "Klinsmannites do not approve", because your whole playing dumb routine asks for a response to clarify. It seems pretty clear that it's a reference to the "mental decompression" part of the tweet, and the relation to Donovan's sabbatical is clear and hardly requires any reading between the lines.

Also, you're so damned blinded by fury that you don't even realize that @dspence2311 is one of the posters that more often than not agrees with your point of view. Certainly more than he agrees with mine. But go on, keep burning those bridges.

I don’t know that’s quite true. Our last U20 team had 6 players playing in Germany including Chris Richards.

The question for Paredes will depend on how regularly he’s playing with the first team.

I generally have respect for people who look for clarification before jumping all over them. It seems like more of a sign of maturity than playing dumb.

I also realized who I was responding to and suspect we can actually have a reasonable discussion about it, even if we don't agree.

    Anyway, enough of that BS.

Shocking results at the U20 WC last night.

    Mexico lost to Guatemala
Jamaica lost to the Dominican Republic.

So the final four are US versus Honduras, Guatemala versus DR.

The winners from those games go to the Olympics, and then play for the U20 title.

Good opportunity here for the states to win it all. Honduras is the host and that is going to be a challenging game.

That seems like bad news for CONCACAF's chances in the tourney finals. Guatemala or DR will be representing CONCACAF in the Olympics? Cannon fodder.

WRT to our game... 1) wish we were in the other group now 2) I don't like our chances at all. I hate to be negative about it but playing a good CONCACAF YNT team in their own house for the right to make the Olympics? Between the poor pitch, dark arts, home crowd and likely biased officiating I think it is a tough ask. Why a U20 tourney decides the fate of a U23 final field is beyond me. Honduras was given the keys to the car in this set of games.

    Maybe, maybe not.

Let's not forget that Guatemala has beaten Panama, Canada, and Mexico to get to the semifinal. So maybe they have a little bit of a "golden generation" with this age group. Maybe they'll do a little damage at the WC and maybe the Olympics? Let's not just discount them.

The US should be thrilled that the U20 CONCACAF Championships are used as Olympic qualifiers. This is our most successful age group amongst all CONCACAF levels. We have a big problem with the U23 level, because most of our top players aren't released for the event. Hence we had to take a real "B" team to the last Olympic qualifiers. The "A" U23 team was essentially the USMNT. McKennie, Pulisic, Adams, Reyna, Dest, Weah, A. Robinson, M. Robinson, Richards, Aaronson, and the list went on. Not available.

At the U20 level we're usually without 3 or 4 guys. This time its Pepi, Slonina, Vargas and only a few others. One other Euro guy wasn't released. Was it Sealy? Maybe. I can't remember.

The US and Honduras seem to play a lot at the youth levels. The US tends to come out ahead at the U20 level. In fact, this Honduras staff is probably saying "not the US again." We beat them in both 2017 and 2019. [Of course, those games weren't in Honduras like this one is.]

Thanks for clarifying. No big deal since I generally find you a breath fresh air around since you are one of the posters that more often than not agrees with my point of view.

JK (not Juergen)... I will reply for real later. It will take some time for me to settle down as I am currently so damned blinded by fury. Might have to find a thread in general forum so I can really give it to you without worrying about the mods.

I assume this is irony. I don’t know your position on “JK.” I just know that I thought omitting Landon was a terrible choice, and that the stated reason was lame. Others may disagree (obviously).
