My daughter remembers doing U-19 girls games in Cal South where several of the players had brought their kids to the game.

NC now, but I started with the whistle in Cal South. I didn't know any girls with 2 at 19. I knew more than one with one by that age. I feel like CA would have been more likely to have 2 by 19 rather than where I am in NC.

How do you guys deal with the situations where an attacker sandwiches themselves in between two defenders and then goes down, knowing when to call a foul on the defender vs. an attacker just trying to bait? I guess it's probably if the two defenders converge on an attacker to sandwich them, but what about if the defenders are already converging and the attacker pokes one between them and then follows through between them and then there is contact and they go down

I know it's a bit difficult without video but would like any advice on this thanks

I have seen this scenario many times - attacker initiates contact and tries to force himself through a spot that is not there. And often goes down in the process. Assuming he does not knock defender down (or aside), I rarely call any foul here. And if I say anything, it would be something to the affect of "you did it to yourself".

Yes that's basically what I do too. Unless the defenders converge in on the attacker, if an attacker is between two defenders in a narrow window and squirts the ball thru them then tries to fly through them I tell him to get up

Coach: Jenn, what position are you playing. I wanted you to play midfield.

Jenn: I thought you told me to play halfback?

    Coacg sighs.

When I was a little guy, I played little league. The coach told me that a hand across the chest means "take a strike". So... I was on a 3-0 count. He gave me that sign. I swung and missed on purpose. He did it twice, trying to miss on purpose, so swung each time (trying to miss). On the third strike, the pitcher beat me.

I never understood why we would ever do this. I didn't get why we would ever deliberately miss a pitch on purpose, but that's what he called for...

Coach assumed I knew what take a pitch meant. I didn't. Dumb me. I wish he told me, "when I swipe my chest, don't swing". He didn't. I struck out. He thought I was an idiot and didn't get playing time.

But what does that say for the coach?

Player: Ref, can you watch this guy? He's fouled me a couple times.
Me: Ok, I'll watch. Where did I miss one?
Player: He got me really good on the ankle and put a hole in my sock!
    Me: Really? Show me
Player: Oh I changed my socks at halftime
Me: *can't stop laugh from coming out* riiiiiiight

    Ah, coaches . . .
U17-18 B-C level boys game. I'm AR1, and the attack is coming toward my goal. Keeper gets caught in no man's land on the far side near the penalty area boundary, and the ball is shot toward goal. Defender comes from the near side to me and does a desperate/wild swing of the leg to clear the ball off the line. He gets a decent piece of the ball, but he is solely trying to prevent the goal. As he clears the ball, the keeper returns to the goal area and collects the ball.

Attacker's coach is screaming for a pass back. As we are trying to explain that the defender did not deliberately kick the ball to the keeper (remember, the keeper is returning from being way out of position), the coach loudly proclaims we don't know the Laws.

Apparently, the coach didn't get the message that our college associations (and we are passing this down to others) has made it a very clear point of emphasis that we are to swiftly deal with persistent or personal dissent with cautions. I talked with the coach after the game, and he proclaimed that he didn't deserve the card. I just told him we are clamping down on dissent and coaches need to understand that.

Sounds like the kind of coach who will yell at his player to run in front of an opponent's free kick "because they didn't ask for 10 yet" then get angry if you caution the player who does it.

It's bewildering how much bewilderment there is with this. I mean there's the issue with people concluding that what's on TV is somehow correct, but the Law is refreshingly clear on this.

"You cautioned an 8 year old?" Coach, I would have cautioned you for telling him to do that, but I'm not allowed to."

But we can caution coaches now.

Last week, U15B (typical summer tourney), I'm in the middle and stop the game for a nasty ankle injury (and no advantage play at the time). Opposing coach yells (ogre loud too, yikes) "you cAn'T sToP tHe gAmE unless it's a head injury!"

(This was also the consolation 3rd place game, so not sure why so amp'd anyway)

"We have a head injury, coach. I need you to go get yours examined after making a comment like that." (If only that could be out loud.)

Son's first HS game of the season was last Friday. It's always early in the HS season when he realizes that some of his teammates don't play club. Example was late in the second half when one of their teammates went down with injury (turned out to just be a leg cramp) and he talked to the ref and said he would just play the ball back to the other team's goalie.

Naturally, one of those teammates who only plays HS soccer picked off the ball and went straight to goal looking to score. My son, along with about 6 or 7 of his teammates started yelling at him to leave the ball alone. :barefoot:

Thankfully, no shot was taken and play continued. I can only imagine the uproar that would have happened had he scored on that play.

We really only see this now when one of the teams purposely puts the ball out of play before the referee can stop the game himself. Ideally, the referee will notice that both teams are willing to stop play to deal with the non-head injury, and blow his whistle, giving the team the ball back with a dropped ball...

But you did say HS, so anything is fair play there, including the whole team, including the coaches, not knowing the sporting thing to do...

Whoa! It's a drop ball in high school, period. 9.2.1.c, just like IFAB 5.3 Doesn't matter what kind of injury it is and no need to 'do the sporting thing,' 'play it back to their keeper, etc.'

I know - my son (who also knew the rule), told the ref and the other team that he would play it back to their keeper. His decision. Unfortunately, the one player who apparently didn't hear him say that was his teammate.

What is the delta between the laws you quote and the actual use of them correctly by HS referees?
