Wow! Been a while. I thought this would go into the transfer portal thread, but it turns out that thread was started by somebody curious about the process. It wasn't an update thread. That said, time, now, I think, to start a thread for a former hometown team that seems like it's getting better overall in recent years.

The University of Pittsburgh loses rising sophomore Katelyn Kaufmann (F, Norwin) to FGCU.

They had one of their best seasons this past fall. Definitely still need to improve results in the ACC but they seem close. They had a great spring season (I know, I know spring results don’t mean anything) but they don’t graduate much and return most of their starters this fall. I am definitely excited for the fall!

    Spring season results
    @ Penn State Win 5-3
    Youngstown Win 7-0
    Canada U17 Rex Win 8-1
    Ohio State Tie 2-2
    West Virginia Win 2-0

They have talent and will win games, but as long as Randy keeps scheduling Towson, Cleveland State, The Citadel etc, the RPI/SoS are going to continue to keep them out of the postseason.

I suspect you will see a schedule this coming year that is more oriented towards the post-season.

Pitt hasn’t released their schedule yet but some teams they are playing have. So far piecing it together it shows they are playing Gonzaga. The Gonzaga game says in Missoula MT, so I’m guessing Pitt is also playing Montana.

Also Liberty shows they are playing at Pitt.

They have 11 kids on the transfer portal from this past year alone. Granted 3 are fifth years but still a very, very high number. They had 11 transfers in 2020-2021 as well and 7 in 2019-20. Don't know of any other program that comes close to that number of recent transfers. Buyer beware. Overrecruit and then spit out the ones they don't want to keep and that kid has to restart the process and look elsewhere.

I would be concerned if they were losing kids that are playing. But seems like all of the ones transferring are kids that didn’t get minutes. Shocker kids that don’t get minutes want to leave. Portal makes it pretty easy to do. You are seeing it all over the place

You'd hope so. Randy is no dummy and it has to be pretty clear that RPI, SOS, and lack of a glamor win kept them from the postseason last year.

The issue for a team like Pitt is that they are in the ACC. They have to take that into account in scheduling, which means their non-conference schedule must be mostly teams they will beat. The challenge is to be sure their non-conference opponents are both (1) teams they can beat and (2) teams that will have good winning records. In addition, within their total schedule they likely will need one or two notable wins or a really good tie. And, of course, they will need to be at or above 0.500.

Thanks, reading their schedule release story i would say Montana is excited to have Pitt coming in. Half the article is about Waldrum’s accomplishments.

As a Pitt fan I am definitely happy with that opening weekend. Definitely looks like they are trying to play a stronger non conference schedule to get an at large bid this year.

Non-conference schedule strength is ranked 82nd, which is 4th-worst in the ACC. The only way their RPI will be strong enough for a tournament berth is by pulling at least one glamor ACC upset, like FSU, Carolina, or Duke.

We will see how it shakes out. It’s pre-season strength of schedule so doesn’t really mean much. We will see how those teams do in their season. Sometimes wins that look great in week 1 don’t mean anything at the end. Example is the Oklahoma state win last year. Looked great week 1 and meant nothing at the end.

Some of those teams have the potential to win their conference and that would help Pitt. I think Montana, Kent State, VCU, and Liberty have a shot at winning their conference. At least top 2 finishes which equals lots of wins which helps. Gonzaga last year had 15 wins so if they could do that again. Only real bomb RPI i see on their schedule is Cleveland state which I’m guessing they are stuck with for a return from CSU playing at Pitt last year. I’m sure they would like to get rid of that game.

I agree Pitt is going to need ACC wins to get in. Have to win the games expected like Miami, Syracuse, and Boston College.

Then probably need to win at least 2-3 of the following games, Louisville, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Notre Dame.

Florida State, Duke, and North Carolina are definite losses.

I would of loved to see West Virginia and/or Penn State as actual games instead of exhibitions

Well said all across the board.

Beating a team like PSU or especially WVU is not out of the question for Pitt, and would've been a really big RPI push.

Solid RPI boosting win over Gonzaga today! 1-0 win on (who else) an Amanda West goal.

This may turn out to be better than it looks now, which is pretty good.

Losing to a 1-1-4 VCU isn't going to do the RPI much good, I wouldn't think. And beyond that, it'll go into the 'bad loss' category when the committee starts evaluating resumes come November. Of course, a good ACC campaign can erase that.

it will all come down to ACC play. Pitt was without Amanda West in the game vs VCU and based on the replay of her injury vs Cincinnati I wouldn't expect to see her for a while. once again Pitt is going to have to figure out how to get results without West. Not something they have really been able to do

It sucks how many injuries she's had to deal with.

Well its the news i feared for Pitt. May be a long ACC season for them. Amanda West announced on her instagram that she tore her ACL and meniscus. She is done for the year. Only bright side i can see as a Pitt fan is she did make it sound like she is returning next season.

Well maybe Pitt isn’t dead in the water without West. They beat Virginia Tech 4-1 on the road last night. Had 4 different goal scorers. First time in program history beating Virginia Tech. If they can put together a few more wins in the ACC then they could be looking at their first post season birth in program history

I watched that game. Pitt was very impressive, had Tech chasing for most of the game. Not sure what's going on in the goalkeeper department with Tech this season - they actually had a field player play in goal a couple of games ago? Skinner is still on the roster so has probably picked up a serious injury that they haven't disclosed. But nonetheless, a great start to league play for Pitt.

Pitt with a great week in ACC play. Defeated Miami at home 3-1 and then kept it going on the road at Notre Dame. Beating Notre Dame 3-1 as well.

Moves to 10-1 on the year and 3-0 in the ACC. Looking like they will make the tournament for the first time in program history! And doing all of this without Chloe Minas and Amanda West

Pitt has never made the tournament before? Wow. Didn’t realize that.

Incredibly impressive season thus far, especially with West out. Ought to be ranked pretty high come next week.
