Katie Meyer, the Stanford captain and star on its 2019 championship team, dies

Katie Meyer, a 22-year-old senior and star on Stanford's 2019 national championship women's team, was found dead at an on-campus residence on Tuesday. The university did not provide a cause of death.

Meyer grew up in Newbury Park, California, and played for Eagles Soccer. She was an alternate on the 2016 U.S. U-17 World Cup team. In three seasons at Stanford, the Cardinal captain had 20 shutouts in 50 matches.

"Her friends describe her as a larger-than-life team player in all her pursuits, from choosing an academic discipline she said 'changed my perspective on the world and the very important challenges that we need to work together to overcome' to the passion she brought to the Cardinal women's soccer program and to women's sports in general," Stanford said in a statement from vice provost for student affairs Susie Brubaker-Cole and director of athletics Bernard Muir.

The Cardinal was the star of its victory over North Carolina in the 2019 NCAA Division I Tournament championship, making two saves in the shootout after the match ended in a 0-0 draw.

Meyer saved the first spot kick, by North Carolina's Taylor Otto. In the sixth round, Meyer saved Tori Hansen's shot. Among those who converted their shots for Stanford were Catarina Macario and Sophia Smith, both now starters on the U.S. national team, and Naomi Girma, taken as the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NWSL Draft.

Meyer's save on UCLA star Mia Fishel's penalty kick in the semifinals drew national attention when she yelled at Fishel, now playing in Mexico for Tigres, after the save.

Meyer explained in an interview with Just Women's Sports in 2020 that Stanford's defense was so good -- it allowed only 12 goals in 25 games -- there were question marks about how good she was. After UCLA opened the scoring in Stanford's 4-1 win, Meyer said Fishel shouted, "We scored because of the keeper. It’s the keeper," which she said wasn't exciting to hear right after she gave up a soft goal. After her PK save, Meyer said she yelled back to Fishel, “Is it the keeper? Is it the keeper?” She downplayed the incident, saying she knew Fishel well from growing up in Southern California and they were competitive. "We get heated in the moment, just like guys do."

The response on social media was so vicious that Meyer said she had to disable her Instagram and Twitter apps. Later, she read the comments, some of which she said were hard to read because she wanted to be a role model for little girls.

"I want to show them that hard work and dedication can empower them to do whatever they put their mind to," she told Just Women's Sports. "So I do actually care about what a mom in Wyoming has to say. To be fair, there were a lot of people who were super positive. There’s a community of women’s soccer fans on Twitter, and they were all supportive. And the reaction after the championship shootout was basically all positivity and excitement, which turned things around."

Sad to report the death this past week of Italy international Giuseppe "Pino" Wilson (number 23), `the Lazio center-back who made 296 appearances in 10 years at the Rome club, then joined compatriot Giorgio Chinaglia with the New York Cosmos and found continued success. He was 76. Wilson - born to an Italian mother and an English father - joined with Chinaglia to help Lazio win the 1974 Serie A title, then played in the FIFA World Cup that same year. Wilson jumped to the NASL in 1978 and made an immediate impact with the Cosmos as the club captured Soccer Bowl '78 with Wilson earning the Defensive MVP Award in the final.

I just saw "The Lost Daughter" last night and I'm gonna see all females as Lost Daughters for a while; so I don't know whether to feel happy for all she achieved, or crappy because it might have been much more in a more humanely arranged culture. I did always think she was the unsung Hera in the band.
