Listening to COG and Josh is not convinced that Pavon is coming back. Costa more likely. The team we have now could basically be the team we have this season I feel like we are a mid-level Premier league team and our FO is content with that. I think it's time for AEG to sell, i'm sure someone like the Dodger owners would spend the dollars to bring in another star DP.
I generally agree with skydog's comments. Stats aren't everything, but the "intangibles" are not really lining up in Costa's favor, either. Struggling players sometimes get a "change of scenery" bump, but frankly MLS is not for the faint of heart. There are away games at altitude, turf, sweltering heat, and long travel days which are especially tough on injury-prone players -- it takes a special mentality to come here and succeed. In this case, you just have to hope the guys in the FO know something we don't. If he comes on a TAM contract...why not I guess? I'm still concerned we haven't really hired a CAM and seem to have given up looking for one. I don't think Costa or Pavon have the vision or passing ability to play there. Both will get to the endline and feed Chicharito lots of crosses however, so maybe that's the plan.
Pavon creates goals. Has a history of it and he did it for us. So I would be happy to have him back ….. if not for the troubling allegations. And yes I believe in “innocent until proven guilty” in terms of the law. But as fan - until I hear some evidence he was framed - I’m going to be highly suspicious of his innocence. Would like us to go for high character players - who can score. Is that too much to ask? Apparently yes.
Brazilian journalist Wilson Pimentel says Douglas Costa is moving toward coming to the Galaxy on a season-long loan with an option to buy. Pimentel says Costa will earn $5 million per season. 🚨Após flertar com o Flamengo, Douglas Costa acerta salário milionário com o LA Galaxy. On the other hand, he'll only be here past this season if the FO thinks he's worth it, so he hopefully can't be a long-term albatross.
If they are signing him for $5M per season, but it's just a season-long loan with an option to buy, then I guess the one benefit is that if it doesn't work out they are just on the hook for one year and can search for a better long-term DP option later. I am generally in the "wait for the right player to come along camp," but that's because you end up getting stuck with a player for 3-4 years. At least with this structure the long-term risk isn't high.
LOL Reporter: Do you think there's any chance signing Douglas Costa as a Designated Player will backfire?Me: https://t.co/8rKVx5d9IU pic.twitter.com/EhGkJn3CuM— LA Galaxy 310 𝕏 (@LAGalaxy310) January 25, 2022
Galaxy legends David Bingham and Justin Vom Steeg are now with the Portland Timbers. https://t.co/D3LTXBGsuC— Galaxy Fan Talk (@LAGalaxyFanTalk) January 25, 2022 Portland should send me $20 to scout our goalkeepers for them.
I highly recommend Corner of the Galaxy during transfer periods. Guesman is good with these rumors. He thinks Pavon no longer has an interest in playing here and is awaiting free agency, which I can’t blame him for. He also said that Costa as a DP and Pavon on TAM is a win. Doesn’t matter who is a DP or TAM if we get both. BUT if we get Costa as a DP and no Pavon, it’s a bad deal. I agree. I feel better that it’s a one year deal, but I’m just not convinced this is the type of guy who fits into our locker room or whatever system Vanney wants to play.
My only hope is that if it's a loan, we are only paying a portion of his salary and Juventus is taking on the rest, which makes it possible to be a TAM deal for this year - and that the $5mil/season is the price if we purchase him after the loan expires...
I’m really glad we are only committing 1 year to him. I agree 100% with you and Guesman that just getting Costa without also adding a goal scorer is a waste. Because I’m pretty sure our roster includes only 2 players who have EVER scored 10 goals in a season. And one is an injury risk and the other seems to be out of favor with our coach. So this group fails roster building 10A (whatever course precedes 101). If we are stuck with this roster for us to have a successful season we need Chich to stay healthy (iffy) and Dejan to get on the field and produce goals (iffy). For reference last season 7 of 8 conference top 4 teams scored between 55-65 goals. For us to reach that level we almost certainly will need 25-30 goals total from our two forwards. Then we need the rest of the team ti score the other 25-30 goals needed to get us up to 55+. And believe me, given the recent history of our defense - we will need every one of those goals.
I won't hold that against him until he's actually convicted, especially not knowing any real details of the case. But to each their own, in that sense. But it is, in fact, a lot to ask, which is why they don't come cheap. Kinda shows how fortunate we've been in retrospect. It's interesting that the guys that've been so successful for us have also been great for their NTs; I think Donovan, Keane, Zlatan and Chicharito are all scoring record-holders for their respective NTs, which is impressive. So obviously we should go for CR7 next.
If there's a long-term plan, like we couldn't land the guy we really wanted this year (cough cough Luka Modric! cough) and we take a flier on Costa for the season with no real long-term commitment until the player we really want becomes available -- I don't hate it.
So no CAM DP huh? Welp, he's signed now. We'll see what goes down. Happy it's only a year Galaxy is on the hook for him tho.
The team could be worse than last year, so far we dumped some starters and backups, and acquired journeymen unknows, Delgado seems to the only decent or half-decent signing, Costa if signed will be a disaster like Denilson was in F*Ck Dallas. Regarding our current position in the league - we are not mid-level anymore, we are closer to relegation fighters, but without relegation fighters mentality (due to the non-existence of relegation threat in US sports).
No Paul Arriola, maybe an Antonio Brown type DP, and looks like Pavon doesn't want to be part of a full on rebuild! The ship is going down already and it hasn't even left San Pedro! No more considerations or concessions for this FO no one on here should be looking forward to anything but losing.
Vanney recently had a video out there where he talks about how important it is to add the right type of character player to the locker room. Hard to square that with what we've heard about R. Costa. In any event, I find it really hard to believe the $5m figure being thrown around.
Corner of the Galaxy throws a little bit of a wet blanket on some of the latest rumors. He doesn't dispute them, but he can't confirm, which suggests that they aren't bubbling from the usual domestic sources. It's always difficult to know whether to trust South American media sources, especially on something like a specific money figure since they usually have no idea how MLS roster rules work and more of their info is from agents who like to puff things up for their clients. On Monday’s show I delicately said that I had heard that Costa was coming as a DP. That’s not confirmed. It was just a rumor. I also had heard that the likelihood Pavon was ever coming was not good. Again, a rumor and not confirmed. Big grain of salt with those rumors. https://t.co/julr3KTXoB— Corner Of The Galaxy (@GalaxyPodcast) January 26, 2022
