If we miss this World Cup you could make an argument that this is a similar generational failure as the 94 team. 94 we had basically a bad week and a half and were out of the World Cup, this team had arguably similar if not more talent and has been under achieving since 2014. All in Luis Diaz basically and hope some of the other guys pan out.
2014 would immediately put this generation ahead for me. We were the neutrals fave in that tournament based on how we played and we advanced further too. Really hope we make this cup now to make it three in a row to match that feat too.
Yeah 2014 was great, but any of the guys from that team who are here now were basically the up and comers and not the leaders, so although they are part of this generation I guess I view all of the main core as the generation and they are now the major leaders and pillars of the squad and I think they've failed at NT level. James has been in his peak years since the last World Cup, Quintero, Duvan, Muriel, Cuadrado, Ospina, Mina, Davinson, Arias, Uribe for me I view them as one generation. It's nit picky for sure, but I had so much hope for this nucleus over this time span and they've really messed it up spectacularly based on the experience and promise that as a unit they've had. Last World Cup was unlucky in some ways but since 2014 the performances since then have fallen off.
My dad passed away in May 2014 so that World Cup gave me so many mixed feelings. I was super [emoji24][emoji24]with both happiness and sadness when we beat Uruguay. So I feel ya!!
this generation surpassed what the previous one did. imo the 2014 team was much better than the ones that came after. We were able to enjoy guys like Yepes, Perea, Zuniga and Armero while having Cuadrado, Falcao (in WCQ) and Quintero. Im surprised we are doing so well in the table for WCQ. For some reason I thought we were doing way worse but we are in 4th on par with 5th place Peru. Our next games are Peru, Argentina, Venezuela and Bolivia. What more could we possibly ask for. Only team we will definitely be losing against there is Argentina. But we are vastly superior to the other 3 teams regardless of it being home or away. it would definitely be a colossal failure if we don't make it to the upcoming WC. But honestly, I think im ready to move on from this generation of players. None of them really lived up to what I was hoping for (except for maybe Cuadrado). So im personally sick of seeing them
The biggest shame was Falcao being robbed of that World Cup, besides that its a real shame that James and Cuadrado and the team are bickering at this point because that 2014 team was a god damn darling to so many neutrals because of the joy and good vibes they played with.
We were again for a few days in 2018 after the way we played Poland. We can be again at Qatar if we qualify and Rueda let's them play loose.
This is going to be a very unpopular opinion: I'd rather we not qualify at this point. The policy from the Fed has been clear years now: qualify to the WC or WYC on your first chance, and your job is safe. It does not matter how you play or how embarrassed you leave the WC. And this squad will leave embarrassed. Whatever joy seeing our squad in a 3rd straight WC might give us is not worth the price of delaying the generational shift that keeps getting pushed off and jeopardizing the next couple major tournaments ahead. Reuda is out if, and only if, we fail to qualify.
I just don't know that Jesurun is touchable sadly. I don't even know how he gets booted. So at this point, I'd take going for continuity. We absolutely have the talent to compete and perform well at a WC if we get there despite this insanity.
I agree. The question is who can we get to coach us and make this team into a consistent side? Pekerman made a great job although he tended to blow in decisive games, but at this point I don’t know who can make this work. I hate Osorio and the way he tried to insert himself in the job, but give him as many games as Rueda and he’d have something figured out.
I agree. In hindsight - he would have been a better choice somehow. I wish we had just pursued Gareca after we fired Pekerman to begin with. Played and coached in Colombia with great success and was coming off a great qualification of Peru to Russia that he seems now on track to repeat thanks to Rueda...
I was vocally in support of Gareca as the first choice, he took a weak squad to the World Cup and he has an even weaker and older one in a better position this time around and they play beyond their potential consistently. Perkman was falling off, CQ not really sure what went wrong in the locker room and Rueda has been the worst of them all.
Honestly the World Cup has brought a lot of joy and pride, but we don't deserve to go and I think there's a good chance we'll just be miserable and embarrassing. I don't think we make it at all, but if we do the federation has to fire Rueda, there is no upside and we might as well give someone else a chance because Rueda is unfortunately lost. He's gotta be fired either way at the end of these qualifiers but I have no illusions it will happen either way tbh.
Rueda needs to go, this is absolutely embarrassing. We need to drop this obsession of hiring colombian managers just because. I would fire this guy now and start fresh with someone else post WCQ. Start calling up new players and leave out all the old guys That stupid senseless patriotism blinds anyone from making sensible decisions. There are no decent colombian managers capable of handling a national team. There just aren't. We need to look elsewhere. Im not watching the final two games, we're not going to the WC as far as im concerned and thats fine, only dissapointing thing is I would have loved to have seen Luis Diaz at the WC but no one else on this team interests me in even the slightest bit. with us out of the way i'd like to see Venezuela in the WC but I don't think it will happen. My first interview went well, just have 2 more rounds of interviews to get through now. Round 2 is tomorrow
Rueda on paper looked good, memories of the 06 qualifiers, qualified ecuador to the world cup, was excellent at nacional But his stint with chile should have been a warning. He's probably on a downward trend where he won't be a successful manager anymore
The scene with the shaman sticking needles into voodoo dolls of all our strikers is very insightful though.
Just watched ep1. As it's the opening, I don't think it's so much of a spoiler to share that it begins with Rueda taking over and glosses over last fall as a totally unexpected and unexplainable couple of results. No discussion of prior regime or reference to the locker room rumours. Further frames the loss of James from call up as a big obstacle the team had to overcome rather than a choice Rueda made.
I think the federation guys need to step down as well. They should have fired him in November. I am not one who like Pekerman shouldn’t be fired. He was the husband who’s dick didn’t work when it mattered The other guy was on who gambles and lost all the family money on magic beans. Rueda is the one who gets drunk and bangs dudes…. sure the 1st one seems the best but other dudes out there. Maybe one will cheat on you but maybe we can get the right one
