Via MLS Extratime Podcast, he has acquired an EU passport (Lithuania) and has interest from European clubs: Matt Turner has interest from Europe after acquiring a Lithuanian passport #NERevs https://t.co/pSB9Td2URe— Revolution Report (@NERevsReport) July 24, 2020 On ExtraTime, Charlie Davies predicted that Brenden Aaronson and Matt Turner will move to Europe in the next 6 month. #NERevs— Seth (@SethMan31) July 28, 2020 Turner has been one of the most well-rounded keepers in MLS the past couple seasons. Turned 26 a month ago, so still young for a keeper and should be somewhere in the USMNT discussion for some time whether he moves abroad or not. Has MNT call-ups to his name but no cap yet.
He seems so well regarded among MLS hardcores...why has he been ignored for the most part? Goalkeeping seems like such a static position for the NT. It's like this inertia of refusal to try options (though I guess we have that at most spots in the lineup too). It's always some combo of Steffen, Guzan, Johnson, Hamid. And in prior years other GKs were ignored to stay with an old and ineffective Howard, Guzan, and the short guy who was always that 3rd GK. Guzan is still past it now. Why waste a backup spot on a 34 year old backup, or whatever age he is. Get these younger options in there. Maybe a Euro move would open Egg's eyes. Good for him, if true. Would be interesting to see what Euro teams have scouted MLS enough to be interested in a US GK that hasn't really been showcased in a NT setting.
No rumors as of yet but he has his Lithuanian passport and was recently named the best keeper in MLS not to mention having 11 caps last year, that's gotta build some interest.
Tom Bogert mentioned there's some interest, but suggested that New England may value him more than European clubs are willing to bid. https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/mls-players-to-watch-as-europe-s-january-transfer-window-opens A number of big European clubs are interested in the USMNT goalkeeper, but New England's asking price is high. It being a World Cup year and such, if no club matches New England's valuation, perhaps a new contract would be a palatable outcome for all parties.
Twellman rumors are usually pretty accurate. Arsenal? 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨 Breaking news!!@Arsenal have put in a strong bid for @headdturnerr from the @NERevolution today. What a great opportunity for both the player & franchise to further enhance their brand. What a great time to be a #NERevs supporter. #MLS— Taylor Twellman (@TaylorTwellman) January 20, 2022
There are reports of Leno heading to Newcastle this window (and if not Newcastle, then somewhere), so it sounds like Turner would be his replacement on the bench.
Big move gotta remember that while Ramsdale is having an amazing season he is coming off of 2 rather lackluster seasons so Turner could find himself in need at Arsenal
Ugh... just what we need.... another Yank GK riding the bench. He can sit right next to Steffen and Horvath. A move to Europe only makes sense IMO if he is going to be the starter.
Adding, per sources: Arsenal's bid for New England Revolution and USMNT GK is in the range of what Manchester City paid for Zack Steffen (~7m up front, add-ons to ~10m).Would be awesome deal for Turner + NE. Turner made Revs roster as undrafted free agent. Deserves this chance. https://t.co/cAqFC5eUxV— Tom Bogert (@tombogert) January 20, 2022
If Arsenal (one of the stingiest big clubs) can afford 7 million for a backup, you'd think one of the relegation battlers could as well for a starter who could likely keep them up. Hopefully they swoop in and steal his signature late. In the scenario he winds up at Arsenal, most of his training should consist of doing drills w/ outfielders to develop his meager foot skills (arguably should be doing this already). We know he can stop a shot by now.
But will he maintain his shot-stopping skills if he isn't playing? I hate this move. Just find a team that needs a starter.
ESPN with some additional details: https://www.espn.com/soccer/soccer-...ngland-revolution-keeper--matt-turner-sources If the deal is consummated, Arsenal anticipates Turner having a "significant role" with club, a key factor ahead of the current New England keeper's expected participation in the 2022 World Cup. . . . Arsenal has three promising young goalkeepers on their books in Arthur Okonkwo, James Hillson and Karl Hein but views Turner as someone with more experience who is ready to be a competitive understudy to Ramsdale.
Horvath hasn't seemed to have lost his. Turner plays well in the offseason. They have the tools and so many reps it's like riding a bike. Whereas Steffen's always been a bad shot-stopper, then he had extensive injuries. People wrongfully attribute his lack of technique, anticipation, & range to rust.
Yeah, it seems like for keepers, some guys are good as backups and some aren't. They can ride the bench for 3-4 months and then come in for a few games when needed and be completely solid. Other guys seem to need the reps to stay sharp.
Hopefully he doesn’t go to Arsenal. Fine keeper but I don’t think he’s good enough for Arsenal, not many are. It would most likely turn into a frustrating situation. I would be much happier to see him find a nice home at a smaller club playing at a lower level.
Like the former no.2 for United (Romero). He was Argentina's no.1 for several years despite very few games for United.
I'm curious about this as well. Surely, some relegation fodder club could drop 5-10 million for his signature.
Arsenal and New England Revolution are in direct contact for Matt Turner deal, as per @TaylorTwellman. Negotiations on - talks will continue in the coming hours. 🇺🇸 #AFCMore: personal terms already discussed & not an issue. It’s clubs negotiation now. Leno could leave soon. pic.twitter.com/YivJgQybB4— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) January 20, 2022 Sounds like Turner's on board and it's just up to the clubs now.
Sounds like it’s probably going to happen, but hopefully it doesn’t. I’d be more inclined if Arsenal’s GK was 35+ years old, but Turner at 27yrs old being an understudy to a 23yr old who likely has more upside seems like a horrible long-term plan. Maybe Ramsdale will get “cramps” every other week giving Turner plenty of time.
Being no.2 at Arsenal isn't bad. Though, I had hoped he might be able to find a starting spot at a lower ranked league.
Great deal for bothTurner and USMNT. His reflexes won't get worse and feetplay will get better. Turner is basically self taught freak, being on a top team with great players around will be good for him.
