We don't usually include Canadian MLS clubs, but there are several Yanks in the CPL who have threads.
Interested in going back to Liga MX: Paul Arriola tells me @TUDNUSA that @ClubAmerica interest is real and that he would welcome the opportunity to go back to Liga MX, but it’s not entirely up to him. Plus, focus is with the USMNT right now. [Video later] pic.twitter.com/9tXXhgHOHF— Michele Giannone (@MicheleG3) January 13, 2022
Don't know how reliable they are, but mediotiempo is reporting Arriola to Club America as basically a done deal. https://www.mediotiempo.com/futbol/fut-al-horno/paul-arriola-sera-el-nuevo-refuerzo-del-america
Another long loan out of MLS (though not the 18-month and flippin' 24-month loans I've read about in the last two weeks). I doubt this post will be read by more than 7 people so I don't expect the answer here, but I'm still wondering what it is about these long loan deals that various MLS clubs are going for right now. If anyone gives a satisfactory answer in this thread I'll rep the post and mail you 3 gold star stickers.
Maybe there's a plan to loosen the rules governing the amount of allocation money teams can get from transfers? Right now, that amount is capped at $1,050,000 that can be used as general allocation money, regardless of the sale price. If teams know that cap is going up soon, it would make sense to delay any 7-figure deal until after that happens. Or MLS expects there to be more money in the transfer market when Covid has less of an effect on club revenues. That wouldn't seem to apply to Arriola though - his value isn't going to go up much no matter how he plays on loan.
What an excellent hypothesis! This seems like a very logical explanation. It also gives clarity to some prior questions I'd had specifically about FCD and what they could do with the money from all their recent sales--at least in the sense that I thought they couldn't get nearly the value out of the sales under current rules--and my thinking that the rules would have to change imminently, as this appears to soon be a problem that several other MLS clubs will face with the current setup. I suspect you're likely to be right in your supposition, so thanks for connecting the dots so well! PM me your address if you'd like me to mail you 3 gold stars. EDIT: Badass, dude.
Another report says "not so fast, bud": Re: Paul Arriola; as @tombogert reported last week, the club has received multiple offers from Club America and is mulling one over as we speak. They've also received "record-setting" offers from within MLS, a source tells me.Club source today calls a move "unlikely," though.— Pablo Iglesias Maurer (@MLSist) January 18, 2022
Or it could be done tonight: Im hearing that Club America of Liga MX has just sent over a THIRD offer for USMNT winger Paul Arriola. Deal could be closed as soon as tonight I’m told. Still a few details to work out. Ame keep on pushing for the San Diego native, ex Xolos player. #USMNT 🦅 #LigaMXeng— herculez gomez (@herculezg) January 18, 2022
As widely reported first elsewhere, D.C. United is weighing offers for Paul Arriola from MLS/abroad. No move, I'm told, unless DCU can get market value AND lines up DP replacement. Separately, club is "very close" to signing a DP, but Arriola exit would require a second one.— Steven Goff (@SoccerInsider) January 19, 2022
Reports that the MLS club that's most interested, or at least one of the ones that is interested, is Charlotte, with a big offer.
Another offer from Club America: Club America have now made a FOURTH offer for #DCU #USMNT winger Paul Arriola. The race for his signature is heating up w/ Charlotte & FC Dallas coming in at the 11th hour. Xolos would get 50% of any potential sale. Not sure how/if that would apply if transferred within MLS.— herculez gomez (@herculezg) January 19, 2022
Sounds like Mexico is off the table: Hearing the same things. Arriola withdrew interest in going to Club America late last night and wanted an MLS destination only, I'm told. #dcu https://t.co/cMNdct3V45— Steven Goff (@SoccerInsider) January 20, 2022
Arriola says "Huh?" “Arriola withdrew interest”🤨 https://t.co/QjAFqsQwPz pic.twitter.com/GJLB7X3sRJ— Paul Arriola (@PaulArriola) January 20, 2022
Both Arriola and Acosta feel the heats for their USMNT career esp. WC if they don’t go play for a better competition.
I'm just catching up on the latest with this (last i heard the loan to CA was a done deal) Just...wow DCU has done some really poor business over the years to give players what they want but if this unfolds the way it seems it's going, I feel terrible for Paul At this point I hope the move back to MX works out because this saga is almost reaching the level of Lucho Acosta's failed PSG transfer
America says "no, we are breaking up with you." I don’t know if Paul Arriola wanted to leave MLS.🧵 What I do know:Club America started off negotiations by stating the needed a winger “ASAP”. They made FOUR offers. None were accepted. TWO WEEKS later they informed #DCU that they were moving on. #FutbolAmericas pic.twitter.com/cZklwondiO— herculez gomez (@herculezg) January 21, 2022
That never happened. Some third party fooled Acosta’s people. PSG was never interested, and obviously never WOULD be interested in a player like Acosta.
