Strong disagree. These qualifiers are way more important than whether Lille will finish 8th or 12th in Ligue 1 this season. I'd rather have him risk his hamstring for the USA than his mediocre club team. If he's playing significant minutes this week, he will be ready to start next week. For its part, Lille isn't exactly southern California with lows in the 30s at night.
The point is to build him up to full fitness so he's minimizing risk of serious reinjury for both club and country. Doing otherwise is dangerously short-sighted.
I continue to be flabbergasted by our fanbase. Pulisic back in training for 5 minutes after covid ... START HIM NOW! Reyna out for over 4 months and fans get wind that he might make the bench the weekend before qualifiers (which has now been ruled out) ... START HIM NOW! Weah off 6 weeks out with hamstring injuries and a few dozen minutes off the bench the week before qualifiers ... START HIM NOW! For people who say they care about our players, we sure do have a lot of people who ... well ... show no care about the well-being of our players. Weah is, apparently, being weaned back to full fitness by Lille. If we care about the player at all, we should be taking the same road.
he’s being weaned back to fitness, as you say. If he plays 30 minutes or so two games in a row, it is usual for the player to get a start and play 65 minutes or so in the following game. Really nothing controversial if his club team did it. So he can do it for the national team.
With Lille Weah plays wing more often than not, and has to cover a lot of ground. In the Berhalter system, he plays RWF and covers less ground. I think he should be fine playing an hour each in two of the three games.
People forget that Pulisic just worked his way back to fitness despite having less playing time in any given game than Weah. This next cycle is essential for us to get at least six points. I can definitely see Weah playing 30-35 minutes against El Salvador and then starting the following game against Canada, assuming he plays again this weekend. That's a very normal progression for bringing a player back. Lille is expecting rain and lows of 33-36 degrees for any night games over the weekend, so its not like he won't be playing in cold weather already.
I haven't seen anybody here or elsewhere yelling for Weah to be brought in to start. It's pretty much universally been what I've been feeling as well- if he's fit enough to go in a league game- and they're not going to do that if he's a risk- lets bring him in to camp and go from there... with the hope that he can do some sub appearances as needed. At this point, with the players missing the US needs a guy of his ability- but hopefully they can get things done without him.
I'm just saying if he's fit enough to play 30 minutes and is otherwise healthy he's not far from playing 60 minutes. No reason he can't get there over the three game series. These games are also way more important than anything left on Lille's calendar.
yeah- I was agreeing with you but not the "make up a fake argument for the other side" guy before you.
Have only been half paying attention but on at least 2 -3 occasions has done great work down the right to get in the box and deliver passes centrally. One right at the end of the half forced a great save on David. Looks like himself - lively, fast Love his game
Weah comes on in the 78th minute - just after they take a 1-0 lead. He was about to come in as the attacking sub, and they just went ahead with it anyway. Gioacchini still on the Montpellier bench.
Bamba and Gioacchini in some last second handbags - Bamba had Gioacchini's leg trapped in a leg lock then played the victim.
Dummies a header to himself, effectively, and was beating Cande to make it down the line, but yanked down. Could have been a card, but no.
Weah gets all the way to the endline for a cross, puts it just a little too far for the man at the back post. Close.
