Six Mexican VMOs across 12 matches. So 6/9 where they’d be eligible (and that’s stretching the definition of eligible). Good thing we waited until 2022 so all those Central American officials got their VMO badges.
It's strange Ramos is appointed for USA/CAN on Jan 30. Shouldn't he should be in Abu Dhabi for the Club World Cup which starts on Feb 3?
Sort of strange, but not really. Everything I've gathered about CWC in recent years is that it's not necessarily treated like a tournament setting for all the referees in the way other FIFA events are (where everyone arrives early, at the same time, and participates in all the same seminars, workouts, etc.). It's essentially just a series of eight games (with two of them being consolation matches). If Ramos isn't working February 3rd, he doesn't need to be there ahead of time. I suspect Ramos won't be slated to work until February 8th or 9th (the semis). And if Monterrey loses, he could just be going there to do the final. Long way of saying what I said in the first sentence. Strange on the surface, but the unique nature of the tournament makes it totally understandable. I mean, when do you think Chelsea is showing up?
With regards to VAR, any word on the stadium installations? I can't imagine Canada is going to be keen on installing it in Hamilton for a single match? Any chance that match gets moved to BMO Field in Toronto, where it's already installed? And I can't imagine that it's going to be easy to install in some of the Central American stadia, due to the low angles and lack of a second deck.
FIFA: "All of the selected match officials will complete their final preparations in the United Arab Emirates a few days before the first match kicks off." (https://www.fifa.com/tournaments/me...the-fifa-club-world-cup-uae-2021-tm-appointed)... but there are always exceptions.
Finally, Concacaf confirmation: https://www.concacaf.com/news/concacaf-to-use-var-in-multiple-competitions-in-2022/
So the 2022 excuse now sounds like it is more about all the other competitions that will have VAR. Got to give CONCACAF “credit” here—they aren’t just doing qualifiers as a stop gap but will be diving in full. Will these be the first women’s matches other than FIFA events with VAR?
I was thinking more about the cameras needed to adjudicate offsides calls, not the physical location of the VAR officials.

https://www.concacaf.com/news/concacaf-announces-changes-to-its-refereeing-department/ This will not be the end of this story.
At least it was recognized that changes were needed. Bringing in Rizzoli to advise is a strong start.
In a manner of speaking, from what I understand, both. The Rizzoli appointment is a stopgap. And there was not a “recognition” in the manner that word would be used here. I don’t know exactly how this finally came to fruition. Hopefully more will come out on that. But this became inevitable within the last year. Only question was whether or not Hall would last through Qatar—or even just WCQ. Obviously, he didn’t. My allusions above to Marrufo having a job come 2023 had a lot to do with this announcement today. But maybe the announcement came too early.
Someone get MassachusettsRef to take over as CONCACAF Director of Refereeing and assign all the posters on this forum to top level CONCACAF matches. I would like to be assigned to a match in Honduras or El Salvador so I can get shot after a game, thanks in advance.
Is anyone really surprised about this? After the essentially ridiculous assignments and lamentable performances in several WCQs that were resoundingly panned on this board and elsewhere, it was inevitable. It is just a pity that there is nobody within CONCACAF considered worthy of this position, and they had to look to Europe for help. Any idea where Brian Hall will end up? Back in MLS maybe? PH
I am personally not surprised. But this outcome has absolutely nothing to do with assignments and performances.
If not related to assignments and performances, is it due to his work style? I heard people within the organization complaining that it is difficult to work with Hall.
