Great news! He seemed to have a really solid pre-season for them. Would be great if he can continue making bench. Hummels has some real mileage on him. Should be sooner than later than Maloney gets more time (if he can stick) and he seems versatile enough to play along backline in different spots.
Honestly shocked. I didn't think much of him coming into this season. BVBII seemed like a money grab, dead end, as I didn't think he was anywhere close on their depth chart. As the Brits would say, chuffed for him. One cameo does not a career make but I am curious as to what BVB does with him now. He might actually have a Bundesliga career in the future even if not with BVB. Curious to see what happens from here. He's represented us on the YNT so perhaps a CB to keep an eye on in the future.
It was. In fact, it was his first time making the squad as well. Meanwhile, he's been a near ever-present in the U23 side that's doing very well in the 3Liga, only a point off 2nd place with a game in hand. BL1 sides' U23 teams don't usually do that well in the 3Liga - when they make the 3Liga at all - so the lad seems to be a better-than-usual player in a better-than-usual reserve side.
Busy guy....he's starting for the U23s this afternoon, less than 24 hours after making his debut for the first team.
Bundesliga six-minute veteran Maloney makes the squad for the cup game. Still no Reyna, Jalen Hawkins on the Ingolstadt bench. 🚨 BVB STARTING XI VS. INGOLSTADT 🚨 pic.twitter.com/zaqQA7BIkR— Borussia Dortmund (@BlackYellow) October 26, 2021

Multi-part interview: https://bvbbuzz.com/2021/12/06/borussia-dortmund-lennard-maloney-usmnt-ambitions/ A bit on his US ties: BM: Your father was in the United States military and you grew up in Germany, which part of the US do you have family? Did you spend a lot of time in the US growing up? LM: My family in the United States are based in Virginia Beach, Virginia, I have been a bunch of times but I don’t get over as much as I would like to due to the schedule here with Borussia Dortmund, it’s a long way for just a week’s break but I enjoy keeping in touch.
How many players from BVBII actually get promoted to the first team. Seems extremely rare. Makes me wonder the purpose of having all these pro guys signed up for it when they will make advance.
quick search on transfermarkt found the 18/19 BVB 2 team had roughly 10 players with a market value over 1m euro. In fact, the top ten players on that team have a transfer value over 90m euro! Gives a chance for development and some of those players the chance to eventually play for the first team. If not, they can still be sold, That said, last years team didnt have many players with a high value.
Obviously, the value of reserve teams has been a debate in Germany, with several clubs (including Wolfsburg) discontinuing their squads. It makes most sense for a team like BM which has a deep bench & players on the reserves who have aged out of the U19s but aren't quite ready for the big team.
from a playing perspective, I dont seea yn downside at all. from an economic side, it is expensive. i think the current covid and financial implications must be somewhat behind teams shutting down reserve squads

So, he just got subbed on against Bielefeldt. I’ve never heard of him. LOl. Too many of these guys! 3 yanks on the field with Reyna and Bello. Nice

Seems rather odd that he subbed in at right back. I didn't notice Passlack having any trouble. Maloney is potentially better against a late set piece chance, though. Did a good job defending Bello in the box once, and seemed unbelievably excited about it in a very German way. Also took a hard arm to the head in stoppage time. Might have milked it. On the same play, incorrect penalty appeals against Can. Solid enough performance in short minutes.
