I mean, I guess it depends on what your definition of "not many" and "higher" is, but obviously Reyna and Bease and a few others did ok. The fact that Edu's move to Stoke didn't work out is not on Gers, however. "You guys suck, you got me a move to the EPL and I didn't cut it!" is not really legit crit.

The reality is there are few clubs not in the big 5 as successful as Rangers/Celtic at getting decent moves for their players. Polster was not good enough. Neither were any number of British, Canadian and other players. But Gers have a really decent track record, esp to Everton, Gio is a great player who is looking to be a very decent coach. Gerrard is rumored to be taking at least one if not more Gers players with him...

It's not like going to Dortmund or similar, but it's not bumfunk either. And additionally, Gers are generally happy to sell if they can make a shilling, so they don't hold players past sell-by date if they can help it.

What time horizon are you talking? I'm not seeing much in ~last 5 years that would represent a decent track record unless the goal is to go to the English Championship.

Well, as far as Rangers are concerned Aribo is likely going to the EPL. Glen Kamara (and, of course Gerrard as a coach) is supposedly going to Aston Villa. Patterson went to Everton for a decent coin. Celtic sent Eduoard, Ajer and Tierney to EPL and Frimpong to Bund all in the last 2-3 years.

Gers obviously had a few rebuilding years after the financial troubles and only got back to the SPL in the 16-17 season so the past 5 years were not good for them, but as a general rule, for a very small league, the OF teams are pretty decent places to get scouted by and move to the EPL or Champs. Obviously they are not as good as the top 5 leagues, top Ered teams or a few other clubs, but they aren't some backwater (from a transfer point of view) and Gio is certain to go to a bigger league at some point unless he really screws the pooch somehow.

SPL may not be a place to go for the beautiful game, but if you play well you'll get plenty of eyes on you.

    You're including Nathan Patterson, right? He's just left Rangers for the Championship at . . . (checks notes) . . . Everton . . . for 16 million sterling.

Rangers' financial shenanigans lead to relegation to D4 and they didn't return to the SPL until 2016-17. Without a sugar daddy, building a top SPL squad from that base takes time: lots of free transfers with options to extend or loans-with-an-option and then seeing who works out.

Rangers have spent 5 SPL seasons trading their way back to parity with Celtic and it's their transfer record over the last 5 seasons (the 25 seasons since the Bosman ruling, actually) that's the reference point for Sands. Every season the Hoops sell at least one player to a Top 5 side and then sign 20-24 year-olds or their own academy players on 3-4 year deals to sell on in 2-3 years and reinvest in another set of 20-24 year-olds. In August 2018 they sold Ousmanne Dembele and Stuart Armstrong to Lyon and Southampton for a combined 30 million Euros and then bought Odsonne Edouard for 10 million. This summer, they sold him to Palace for 16 million, along with de facto academy product Kristoffer Ajer to Brentford for another 15.5 million.

The first time Rangers spent SPL-serious money was 2019-20 when they activated Ryan Kent's loan option for 7.5 million Euros on a 4-year deal. If they sell him, it won't be until this June. It's taken Rangers 5 whole seasons in the SPL to get back to Celtic's level. Now that they have, the sales to Top 5 leagues will start.

    I blush.

But I'm not the only one who brings good ideas and better arguments. The most pedantic way of expressing arguments perhaps [you can say that again say the mods ], but not the only one.

The more I think about this move, the more I like it. Like Christian Ramirez at Aberdeen, if you're good enough for MLS then you're obviously good enough for everything the non-Old Firm SPL can throw at you. Facing an Old Firm side would certainly be a big step up and an Old Firm derby is like nothing else on earth, but if he can handle that he can handle any kin of pressure.

On top of that, Ronny Deila will have given him useful pointers and would surely have told him if he thought he wasn't ready. Add UEFA ball exposure to the mix and this is a phenomenal opportunity for him.

The difference between pre-2012 and now is that I think people would raise an eyebrow if 3-4 established first-team players for the U.S. went to Scotland, even the big two.

It's noticeable that Cameron Carter-Vickers' success isn't exactly creating a giant groundswell for Berhalter to select him for the national team, unlike the ones we've seen for players elsewhere. But somebody like Sands may be fine, especially because the #6 spot is wide open for some competition. If he's consistently getting 90 minute shifts in the next few months, then it will definitely raise his stock in the national team picture.

It's probably a bit of a reversion to the mean after 4-5 seasons of rebuilding. OF will likely never return to to their peak transfer years (absent lots of oligarchs suddenly deciding to buy up SPL teams) but I think you'll see more Gers to EPL transfers this winter/summer and going forward. Gers reportedly turned down Watford today for Barisic.

Won't be Patterson numbers, but they'll have a few every year if things continue apace.

No worries. And don't get me wrong. It's not like they're suddenly gonna be Ajax. But it appears a few guys will be following Gerrard this winter/next summer to EPL. It's not a sexy move, but it's not some exile either.

The biggest issue with SPL is there is OF, sometimes one or two others, and there is the rest. And the rest is just poor - financially and footballingly.

But if you want to go to England, OF is not a terrible place to audition. Not sure it's that much better than a lot of other storied clubs, even NY, but it's not bad either.

You can be damn sure Rangers turned Watford down. 2 million pounds is something that goes beyond an insulting joke and into "Do I tell him what to do with his mother or do I send him that Michael Jordan laughing GIF?" territory.

As for Baric's answer, 2 million pounds over the usual 3-years or 2 years plus an option equals somewhere between a bit under 700K per year and a million. He's on a million at Rangers right now. Why swap that, with trophy bonuses and UEFA ball (and bonueses) on top, for a doomed relegation struggle and the Championship thereafter?

Besides, at 29 the next 2 windows were already his last big-money-move opportunity. With Reese James out for the season, Chelsea are suddenly in the market for an LB. I doubt they'll bid for Barisic but they'll sign someone, and for a hefty premium. That will start a scramble for LBs across England and Europe. He could go for 7-8 million sterling, maybe more.

    Edit:
I'm watching Watford against a seriously depleted Leicester right now. 6 minutes gone, and they're already 1-0 down. Maybe All I can say is that maybe ". . . and the Championship thereafter" shourld be amended to ". . . and the Championship thereafter, with League One to follow!"

The Sands move has been a fun opportunity to dig a bit more into Gers and Gio's arrival. (More loved by some in memory than he was as a player... but that's a different - racist creeps - story.) There's a lot of talk of Crysencio Summerville - who just banged a hat-trick for Leeds U-23's - coming to Gers. Gio brought him into Feyenie's 1st team and knows the kid well and he can't get 1st team game for Leeds - though Blackburn are also mentioned as interested.

And, as per the article above (and lots of other media), the Bologna Dane winger Andreas Olsen could be coming in. (Saw a report Gers offered 5mill lbs. Hearts John Souttar is mentioned often as a CD target.

Sands is being listed as a "versatile CD" by some media as well. It's hard to imagine he's an immediate replacement for Tavernier (Gers most productive attacking player at RB) - not even the multi-million Patterson played over JT. If Barisic does leave it opens the LFB slot, (AV latest rumoured destination) as Patterson - though nominally an RB - played there a bit for Gio. If Aribo and/or Kamara do move, they are two of the more defensive/holding of the midfield crew - though they "most usually" play straight midfield in a 4-3-3.

Kinda interested in where Sands slots and how the personnel change. RN Gers are 6 points up on Celtic with 20 games played and 13 to go. They have 2 OF games remaining and Celtic have a 1 pt. GD advantage, so the second to last game of the season - an OF at Ibrox - could be a very good game.

So that settles the question of where Sands will play. At least to start, he goes into the midfield.

Yeah. Word on the "street" that I've seen suggests Gio is not super-keen on the Lundstram/Kamara pairing (last seen vs. Lyon, I think) and most folks seem to think Sands will step in for Lundstram.

Good point- I’m sure any Rangers midfielder who proves himself to be clearly top quality….. will get Gerard’s attention and interest over next 2 years.

Just looked at Live Soccer TV and saw that this game will be nationally televised on CBS Sports. Usually I have to use Paramount+ to watch the Scot Prem. Hoping Sands starts and has a solid debut.
