This year's USWNT January training camp will not feature any matches. It will be held in Austin, Texas. https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/20...-annual-january-training-camp-in-austin-texas GOALKEEPERS (3): Aubrey Kingsbury (Washington Spirit), Casey Murphy (North Carolina Courage), Alyssa Naeher (Chicago Red Stars) DEFENDERS (9): Alana Cook (OL Reign), Abby Dahlkemper (San Diego Wave FC), Tierna Davidson (Chicago Red Stars), Imani Dorsey (NJ/NY Gotham FC), Emily Fox (Racing Louisville FC), Naomi Girma (San Diego Wave FC), Sofia Huerta (OL Reign), Kelley O’Hara (Washington Spirit), Emily Sonnett (Washington Spirit) MIDFIELDERS (7): Lindsey Horan (Portland Thorns FC), Jaelin Howell (Racing Louisville FC), Rose Lavelle (OL Reign), Kristie Mewis (NJ/NY Gotham FC), Samantha Mewis (Kansas City Current), Ashley Sanchez (Washington Spirit), Andi Sullivan (Washington Spirit) FORWARDS (6): Ashley Hatch (Washington Spirit), Mallory Pugh (Chicago Red Stars), Margaret Purce (NJ/NY Gotham FC), Trinity Rodman (Washington Spirit), Sophia Smith (Portland Thorns FC), Lynn Williams (Kansas City Current) Notes from Vlatko in a press conference: Macario was originally on the roster, but they decided against pulling her back and forth from France. Another player may be named soon to replace her. Morgan, Rapinoe, Heath, etc. were told last November that they would be left off a few rosters to evaluate younger players, but they are not out of the picture. Sauerbrunn is out for medical reasons (not injury). Ertz was judged to not be physically ready for camp and needs to get back to fitness for club.
If you're curious about the medical reasons that kept Sauerbrunn out of this camp, she's been pretty open about it: https://onherturf.nbcsports.com/202...pens-up-about-freezing-embryos-ending-stigma/
Well if the younger players cant beat the veterans for a spot on the team then yes they should still be on the team.
I like that Vlatko is creating space for young players to participate. I would imagine that the Vets that are not in probably appreciate the time away. Good to see Sam back in the mix.
I would be surprised if all 4 of Morgan, Rapinoe, Heath, and Press are there in 2023, but I would also be surprised if none of them were.
The bar has truly been lowered if you are complimenting this mediocre coach for calling up young players.
A U-23 WNT camp is being held concurrently with the senior team's in Austin, Texas, and there will be a closed-door scrimmage between the two teams at the end of camp: https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/20...on-with-january-training-camp-in-austin-texas
Ya, I complimented who ever it was that took an experimental roster to the Algarve Cup, too. (was that Sermani?) I think this is a great time to bring in new bodies. Like it was then. As far as "mediocre coach" .... Vlatko lost a game in the Olympics on a super dodgy PK call. The player was at the edge of the box, moving away from the goal, and ran into Davidson. We've gotten away with stuff like that a ton of times. Was Ellis a Mediocre coach? Was DiCicco? Dorance?
Vlatko's emphasis on younger players is greater than other USWNT coaches. And I applaud him for it. The only two players on the January roster who are over 30 are Naeher and Kelly O'Hara. I suspect they're on the roster because they have to prove that they belong on the team going forward. The over-30s who aren't on the roster are Harris, Sauerbrunn, Krueger, Morgan, Rapinoe, Heath, and Press. Some of them will be on the roster for the 2023 World cup -- but Vlatko is giving the youngsters an opportunity to show they belong.
Thank you. You are correct. I stopped listening to the two Vlatko haters here because it has nothing to do with soccer but an agenda of some sort.
I've got no camp nor agenda in this dispute (also I am not even an USWNT fan, actually), but I guess it would be fair to point out that, in addition to the game you mentioned, USA were destroyed by Sweden in the first match of group stage. Of course, the game that really counted was the one vs Canada, since it was the one eliminating USA, and losing games at group stage doesn't matter if you anyway advance in the competition. I claim that what the team showed at group stage could anyway be legitimately worrying.
In 2011 they were horrible in the first match against NoKo. Beating that NoKo team 2-0 was about the equivalent of losing to a WC finalist in the first match of group play. You're right, the game that really counted was Canada, and they scored off of a suuuuuuper soft penalty. The luck didn't go our way. In other tournaments it has. You didn't answer my question. If Vlatko is a weak manager, was Jill? Tony? Anson? The biggest problem is that the team got super old. Any of the players could play in the WWC and look great. But, not all of them together. Carli, Pino, Tobin, Morgan, have all lost a step. Press has too. Press is still fast, but not like before. Any of them can play and shine. But, not all of them.
And Morgan Gautrat. Roster that will report to camp: GOALKEEPERS (3): Aubrey Kingsbury (Washington Spirit), Casey Murphy (North Carolina Courage), Alyssa Naeher (Chicago Red Stars) DEFENDERS (8): Alana Cook (OL Reign), Abby Dahlkemper (San Diego Wave FC), Tierna Davidson (Chicago Red Stars), Emily Fox (Racing Louisville FC), Naomi Girma (San Diego Wave FC), Sofia Huerta (OL Reign), Kelley O’Hara (Washington Spirit), Emily Sonnett (Washington Spirit) MIDFIELDERS (8): Morgan Gautrat (Chicago Red Stars), Lindsey Horan (Portland Thorns FC), Jaelin Howell (Racing Louisville FC), Rose Lavelle (OL Reign), Kristie Mewis (NJ/NY Gotham FC), Samantha Mewis (Kansas City Current), Ashley Sanchez (Washington Spirit), Andi Sullivan (Washington Spirit) FORWARDS (7): Ashley Hatch (Washington Spirit), Mallory Pugh (Chicago Red Stars), Margaret Purce (NJ/NY Gotham FC), Trinity Rodman (Washington Spirit), Sophia Smith (Portland Thorns FC), Lynn Williams (Kansas City Current), Morgan Weaver (Portland Thorns FC)
I actually didn't claim that Vlatko is a weak manager and I frankly have no strong opinion about him. I only wanted to point out that the narrative about USA just losing a close game to Canada that could have gone either way, while forgetting the loss to Sweden or the depressing 0-0 draw vs Australia at group stage, looks quite shortsighted, like a way to sweep problems under the rug.
seems like the u23 roster is pretty strong/as close as possible to an all-star college team. Especially read good things in Tenbow, Fishel, Spaanstra, Ordenez(all fwds), at mid though, only heard of Pinto. At defense, several got picked by the NWSL draft shame this game is closed doors, since even streamed, could get watched by pro scouts from all over the world(which would especially benefit the collegians as an deterrent to the cheapo salaries the NWSL usually offers) question; will the January camp be the SBC roster as well? Or does the SBC mark the return of the over-the-hill gang?
Someone mentioned in another forum that the USWNT could have actually won all their games, including against Sweden, but position awareness wanes with age because the forwards had easy more than 15 offside goals. There was one game in which it could have been 8-0 or more.
Well, it's not USSF's job to help out pro scouts in other countries; they can watch many of the streamed college games, if they can't scout in person. Closed-door matches, whether with a youth team or another national team, have the benefit of being able to set their own rules about substitutions and stoppages, if a coach wants, as well as being able to experiment in ways that you don't often see even in friendlies. No, the SheBelieves roster will be a separate roster, and Vlatko may call back in some of the veterans, whether that be some veteran forwards or some of the others who weren't fit for this camp. He may wait to call some back in though until after he sees how they're doing with their clubs (I'm thinking Ertz here).
Well, that's a bit of rewriting history. Yeah, we had chances in games, but we would have been rightfully deemed as lucky if we had somehow pulled off all wins. Sweden completely outplayed the USWNT in that opening match.
I was responding to the assertion that Vlatko is a week manager. You disagreed with what I said. Looked like you were attacking Vlatko, in the context of the conversation. I totally agree that there is a problem; I've posted in reference to it before: We were old. You can play any of Pino, Tobin, Morgan, Kristen, or Carli. But, you can't play all of them. Or, 4 of them. And, that's exacerbated by the fact that LH isn't very quick either. Hense, I'm glad Vlatko is bring in new/younger/quicker players to look at. Imo, he's going to have to pick a vet or two, and jettison a couple of vets.
