A forward signing (loan with option) Philadelphia Union announced today that the club has acquired Julián Carranza on loan from Inter Miami CF in exchange for a natural second round pick in the MLS SuperDraft 2022 presented by adidas. The 21-year-old will be added to the Union’s active roster immediately and will occupy a Young Designated Player spot. Carranza will be on loan with the Union through the end of the year with an option to make the loan permanent. “We’re excited to welcome Julián to the Philadelphia Union and add a promising young attacker with a lot of potential to our roster,” said Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner. “He is aggressive in the box and brings the versatility of a natural center forward who fits the profile of a striker we were looking for, as well as our style of play. We look forward to welcoming him to the team and watching him develop in our system.”
Looks like the Union will be receiving another $2.5 million from the Aaronson transfer as he hits upcoming targets (per The Brotherly Game). Plus, after receiving over $3 million for the Champions League and earning money during 3 home playoff games, the team should have enough money to acquire a quality striker without Sugarman needing to reach into his pocket. I like the Carranza “budget” acquisition, but I’ll be disappointed if they don’t really try to buy the missing piece of the puzzle!
Anthony Fontana is set to join Serie B side Ascoli Calcio on a free transfer from Philadelphia Union.Ascoli sit 10th in Serie B but are only six points off the promotion spots. Ascoli is the current home of US eligibles Gabe Becchi and Guiseppe Barone. Source: @Owenboyle17 pic.twitter.com/ujv4cuc4My— USMNT burner (@burnerusmnt) January 2, 2022 It is a shame that Fontana, a homegrown player, will be moving to a Serie B club on a free transfer. What is the point of having this academy-focused approach if you are not going to recoup some of that money you spend on the academy with transfer dollars from the precious few that will make it that far?
Would a Serie A club pay a transfer fee for Fontana? The reality is that if he wasn't moving on a fgree, he wouldn't be going to a Serie B Club. Were the Union going to get a transfer fee for a player who rarely played, or made the 18 for that matter?
No arguing that. Just that it is a shame they will get no return on their investment in this case since so few players actually get to the point through the academy system that a club overseas desires to even sign them.
Is it just me or does it seem like generally there is a shit ton more internal to MLS player movements than in previous years? Maybe it just seems that way because of the short offseason this year I dunno.
Definitely seems like way more intra-league moves, but I don’t know what factors are leading to it. Nevertheless, after relieving us of Accam, CJ, and now (hopefully!) Kacper, Chicago is my favorite MLS partner!
🚨 Philadelphia Union acquire $1.15 million in allocation money from Chicago Fire for Kacper PrzybylkoThank you for always wearing the Union badge with pride, Kacper 💙📝👉 https://t.co/YPGy6shn9d pic.twitter.com/Bu2A644KGU— Philadelphia Union (@PhilaUnion) January 22, 2022
On behalf of the Chicago Fire, I also say "Thank you." He may not be the best striker out there, but, considering the Fire have zero strikers (18 year old Jhon Duran and Offor were the only forwards at all), he is now our best striker. Thanks.
According to the top Danish soccer websites, then last season Danish Champions Brøndby IF have sold their 27-yo Danish Superliga top-scorer Michael Uhre to Philadelphia Union for $3 million + possible add-on's. According to Brøndby's official website, then they have accepted an offer for Michael Uhre and he has also come to an agreement regarding his personal terms, though not yet revealing the name of the club in question. Michael Uhre only had one year left of his contract with Brøndby, which is why he was up for sale. https://www.transfermarkt.com/mikael-uhre/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/264423
The Uhre signing gives me one of my favorite Google Translate paragraphs ever: Now BT writes that it is the MLS club Philadelphia Union that buys watches free in Brøndby. https://beta.bold.dk/fodbold/nyheder/avis-mikael-uhre-skifter-til-mls-klub.
It would seem that the Michael Uhre deal is done, but they a waiting for the paperwork and a medical, and for the deal for his replacement to be finalized. Brøndby seem very close to signing the 22-yo Swedish forward Carl Björk from IFK Norrköping for a $500k transfer fee. https://www.transfermarkt.com/carl-bjork/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/407398
As for Michael Uhre, then he was Superliga top-scorer last season and has been doing equally well this season, despite Brøndby not doing quite as well. Generally speaking, then almost all of the players who have moved from the Superliga to MLS in the past, have been on a downwards spiral, either due to their age, or like Hany Mukhtar, who was considered to be a big talent, but after a few good seasons was playing less and less for Brøndby, before being sold to Nashville, which seem to have been a highly successful move for him anyway. An outright flop was Fanendo Adi who only got to play 6 Superliga games during a few month at FC København before they gave up on him and put him up for sale and send him on loan to Portland. But again a pretty successful move. Michael Uhre has on the other hand been on an upwards spiral both this and last season, so he should be a much better signing than the two I mentioned above, and much faster and quicker than Fanendo Adi used to be, both regarding pace and thinking (vision).
According to Danish soccer websites, Michael Uhre has agreed to a $1.5 million a year wage at Philadelphia Union. (same wage as former Brøndby player Hany Mukhtar at Nashville)

Probably no more than an inquiry or rumor as the Daily Mail had an article linking him with Fulham and some other EPL team back in the Fall. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...mas-Frank-keen-strengthen-left-wing-back.html
Wagner deserves a long and fruitful future at the top level he can reach, but how about winning an MLS Cup here in Philly first?
Union benefitting from past moves of players: New from me:My understanding of the Union’s cut of Auston Trusty’s sale to Arsenal is…1. Take the fee (which we still don’t know yet)2. Subtract $750,000 (yes, he hit all the GAM incentives)3. Count 25% of what’s leftThat’s what the Union get.https://t.co/R8OX02WZEp pic.twitter.com/Fh8Y5RKfaT— Jonathan Tannenwald (@thegoalkeeper) January 31, 2022

I feel like they should have gotten more out of him. That said, I've always found him to be wildly overrated, so it's no huge loss to me.
Agreed, tenacious and pesky on defense and had good interactions with Aaronson but once BA left he seemed to stand on the ball too much or try and trick his way past too many defenders. Seemed to have an undercurrent of discontent here so some weeks of poor play followed by a realization that he needed to show something to try and get offers the Union might take. Not unexpected and not too sad to see him go either. Never seemed to embrace team or Philly which is kind of a must have quality to be an overwhelming fan favorite in this town. Hope he does well other than when he plays the U but okay with making room for homegrowns.
