Not on the Bench for the game today. Punishment for the Tweets or not good enough?

What is the thought on this loan move for him?

From a distance, it doesn't seem great. Getting some garbage minutes to close out a game, or nothing at all, and doesn't seem to be very productive when on the field.

Guess I was hoping since most see him as a NT fixture, he'd get to an EFL team and slide right in. I realize it's a different system and whatnot, but Dike has jumped right into a key position on Barnsley. Why is this any different?

I always got the impression Morris was the player they brought in to play real minutes and Arriola was brought in for depth. I don't think many thought he would slide right in to Swansea pushing for promotion.

Once Morris went down the Swansea situation quickly became uninteresting.

Yeah, I agree you could tell with the way they spoke about Morris and the way he kept getting more and more minutes each game to build up his fitness that he was the one they were really excited above. I never got that same sense about Arriola. And yeah with Morris going down injured, I've mostly lost interest in Swansea as well.

I also think one of the big differences between the Dike and Arriola situations was that Barnsley were 14th, in the bottom half of the table, when Dike came in, so they were much more open to trying something different to improve their fortunes. And then with Dike instantly performing, and Barnsley quickly rocketing up the table, it suddenly became very hard to ignore him.

Around the time Arriola came in, Swansea were in 2nd and on pace to go top of the table (having played fewer games than 1st place Norwich). They've struggled a bit since then, and now are only on pace for 2nd, with Norwich establishing some distance between them in 1st. But this manager doesn't rotate his squad much or use all his subs very often, so I don't think their recent change in form will help Arriola much either unless they drop much further.

I thought it was interesting the initial Morris press release said "should he return to Seattle at the end of the loan he'll be stronger" but with Arriola DC said "we look forward to him rejoining the club." I suspect Arriola was always just going to be a short term depth move for Swansea.

Not sure a Dike comparison is that relevant given that's a whole different set of teams and a player in a completely different point in his career.

It's not the end of the world that this move hasn't worked out because the alternative would have been for Paul to just hang out and do a preseason with DC. However, he's one of our hardest working and most versatile players. I thought that would help him get a good amount of minutes. Maybe there's a tactical issue. Swansea plays 3 5 2 and I don't think Paul has experience in a 3 5 2, though his two-way skillset and hard running seems perfect for RWB.

To everyone who thinks that Paul was trialing at Swansea, he wasn't. The owners of DC are also the owners of Swansea. He was there with no option to buy, merely for training, and to provide depth on the wing, if they need it. Nothing more. It's working out for him, in that he's training and getting back in shape having only played in a couple of games last year due to his knee injury.

I understand the common ownership issue and that he is returning off major injury, but he looked sharp in terms of his health in the USMNT games. The point is that he's played 42 minutes since getting there 8 weeks ago, which included some midweek games. For a versatile guy that can play half the positions on the field and works his butt off, it is a dissapointment that he isn't playing more. We're talking about a borderline USMNT starter.

I love the move, it's a fantastic place to spend preseason, IMHO, compared to the actual preseason with DCU. While it doesn't offer the opportunity to get in sync with teammates, it offers the ability to train with high quality players, get in outstanding levels of fitness with outstanding trainers day in and out, and play in the odd game here and there against some vicious defenders to sharpen one's game. It's a win for Paul, win for DCU, no win or loss for Swans unless he performs outside of expectations one way or the other.

damn that is too bad. I still think it was a great move. I am sure he learned a lot even in the short time he was there that will make him a better player.

Interesting interview. He sounds pretty ambivalent about the whole thing.

He says that he told DC he wanted a loan because 2020 was kind of a wasted year for him and there was uncertainty about when the MLS season would be starting, so he didn't want to go too long without matches. DC was accommodating but steered him toward Swansea because they had a good relationship with the club and could control what happened to him there (e.g., ensure he wasn't overused). And he understands DC's position, and was excited about the loan, especially since he knew Jordan Morris was going there as well.

However, Arriola didn't see Swansea as a great fit. He didn't really think there was a position for him in the 5-3-2 that Swansea played. Maybe right wingback, but they already had someone there that had played essentially every minute of every game at that point. So the club mostly saw him as a 10 in the center midfield, or as a 9 up top, which Arriola wasn't comfortable with.

Then Arriola kept picking up one injury after another in training, and eventually DC decided to bring him back

You also have to note that the Swansea manager poorly managed his substitutes. Even though he could use 5, he would often just use 1 or 2, really limiting the chances to get a player the feel for the league.

He only used 3 in the playoff final despite being down 2-0 within 20 minutes!

There's probably a good reason they closed the season by winning 4 of their last 14.

Yeah, that's a boneheaded mistake. Ran out of steam. There are 46 matches in the Championship so rotation and squad freshness are important.

If a Yank plays for a club in Canada (you know like Bradley), do we consider him playing abord? Maybe same as in Mexico. LOL.

We have at least one thread for a CPL player and plenty for players in Liga MX and the Mexican lower tiers, past and present, including this thread started when Arriola signed with Xolos.
