Huh. I was assuming we'd be in Vancouver under the dome. We know it would sell out and it is sort of their turn with the early games having been in Toronto and Edmonton. Also, the weather advantage of a cold game would be less against the US than against one of our warmer weather opponents. At some point there's a balance of how much benefit there is versus how much our skill game also suffers.

That game is between away games to Panama and El Salvador. Flying in and out of Central America is easier from Toronto than Vancouver.

Also, at that time of year, the weather would be similar to Edmonton last night but with a better pitch. We have the advantage that our guys already went through this already

I saw an article on the Globe and Mail suggesting Hamilton. Eastern time zone for travel but turf instead of grass in Toronto.

Besiktas scored first, but they lost all 5 games with a -11 goal differential, and Ajax won all 5 games with a +13 goal differential. Hutchinson was subbed on in the 81st, and Larin got a yellow in the 88th. Besiktas's last chance at points is at Dortmund, and Besiktas is the only Champions League club without a point. So that's five confirmed now? Altitude (North Vancouver), Rivers (Kamloops), TSS (Burnaby), Unity (Langley), and the Whitecaps reserve team (Vancouver)?

There were rumours that the Victoria Highlanders intended to move over. Possibly a reserve team from Pacific as well? I know they were hoping to start with eight teams.

Six is good. I know they are hoping to start with eight but six is at least enough as a decent starting point. I'm also glad that they will have at least two founding teams from outside metro Vancouver. One problem for the PLSQ is that many seasons they've really been the PLSM with pretty much every club in and around Montreal. Since the whole point of the D3 leagues is to spread the talent net, especially to areas that don't have pro teams, being in more cities is great.

I'm not sure why it's funny? Personally, I like the integration of the D3 leagues regardless of who owns or runs the individual teams. Plus the Canadian MLS teams had already reached out to the CPL about having teams in the CPL before the CPL started. I understand the reasons that the CPL didn't want that but the MLS teams didn't see a problem with having teams under the CSB/CPL umbrella then so I don't know why it would be a problem now. From a NT talent perspective, we benefit most when there's a good relationship between the CPL and the MLS teams.

I think they are expecting 7

To be fair, half the province lives in Montreal Metro area while Beauport is closed to Quebec City. The club in St-Jean-sur Richelieu is deep south shore while the Ottawa club switch to Quebec since they are closer to Montreal than the GTA.

Contrarily to popular belief, It's actually the other way around - MLS Clubs tried to join the league with their reserve teams on their terms AND dictate how the league should function. CPL actually met and heard them out wanting to work with them but MLS clubs rejected league's demand such as branding on their reserve teams being identified as such while the league was open with them owning but NOT operating as a reserve team.

From echoes from those talks, they didn't go in that meeting in good fate and the intent to make it clear that CPL was not Canada's D1 while wanting the league to be set up to feed their system first and foremost. It's not that MLS clubs don't want the league around, they never liked the "Division 1" sanction and they lobbied against it up until May 2017. Even Don Garber was quick to brand it as a lower division.

I mean, CPL 1st employee was Paul Beirne - who was TFC 1st employee. You couldn't get a better guy to make it work with the 3 clubs than him who's always been a fan of MLS and TFC.

The most toxic out of the 3 was Bill Manning of TFC who viewed Ontario as their personal turf. They even tried to move their USL club to Hamilton when the city was in a dispute with Forge over Tim Horton's Field. It took the CSA to preemptively warn that no clubs would be sanction out of Hamilton but Forge.

Montreal views the entire province of Quebec as their own, although they never cared to look outside of their academy system. They never cared about the Maritimes.Their reaction to a CPL club in Quebec and Montreal will be interesting.

I must say that the Vancouver organization has truly come around and are being cooperative and positive about the league. (that's after after trying to sabotage CPL in Calgary with the CSA having to blocked the Whitecaps from putting a USL team there). They went from "we own Manitoba to BC" to sharing BC and coexisting with CPL/CSB.

I was a HUGE fan of the 3 clubs from 2012 to 2016 - but stuff like this made me lose tons of respect for those clubs, this was unbelievably unnecessary. My problem isn't with MLS at all but I sure damn expected much better from those 3 ownerships

    Even better.

I'm not really criticizing the PLSQ so much as pointing out the reality. It's not easy or else it would already be done. I'd just like to see Sherbrooke, Trois-Rivieres, Gatineau, another QC team, and Drummondville, for example. Even L1O, which has by far the most sizeable cities to put teams in, has only just started getting meaningful numbers of teams outside the GTA in the past couple of years. And they still aren't in places like Kitchener, Cambridge, or Kingston.

I wasn't in any of the meetings and, honestly, I'm not really concerned about whose fault it is that the CPL-MLS relationship is rough. The CPL was the new, pro D1 league and the MLS teams didn't want to treat them that way. Or the MLS teams had invested hundreds of millions of dollars establishing pro soccer in Canada and a bunch of teams that hadn't even kicked a ball yet wanted to be treated as equals. The MLS teams need to look beyond their own academies for talent. Or the CPL needs to stop putting up barriers to loan deals. Whatever the facts and however people want to interpret them, it is bad for us all that the relationship isn't smooth. As much as Europe is the goal, CPL to MLS is an obvious step along the way and should be an easy one.

PLSQ isn't ran as efficiently as L1O - dare I say that BC League 1 will be better ran than PLSQ from the onset having read the league's operating manual.

Might be the reality of the province where outside of Montreal, soccer isn't that popular and CF Montreal has failed spectacularly at rallying the province behind them and making the sport bigger... they can't even get regional support while pissing off their own fans in their own city

It's totally fine to not see them as such and not doing business with CPL - but trying to set a negative narrative about the league before it kicked a ball was disappointing - especially when everyone agreed that it was needed

They didn't want reserve teams in their league nor clubs being ran as such which makes total business sense. Disagreeing and not being part of it is one thing, interfering with the project because you didn't get your way was petty and beneath them

Why? If anything it opened more opportunity to players those MLS teams have been snubbing for years, players that are proving that they shouldn't have been overlooked with the way they compete nationally and regionally. Doing what you're suggesting denies those guys these opportunities.

The better question is - why aren't they putting reserve teams in PLSQ and L1O? Why aren't they working with CSB to launch a D2 where putting MLS reserve clubs would actually make sense? Maybe this will change over time but initially, they were more interested in controlling the league than cooperating with it.

Weird that CPL is closer to European leagues than its neighbour MLS, a shame indeed.

They are free to sign CPL players whenever they want like Joel Waterman at CF Montreal. What the league won't do is being the 3 clubs exclusive developmental system, which makes zero business sense.

TFC has both TFC III and TFC Academy (so their U19 and U17 squads) in L1O. The TFC-affiliated Windsor TFC team also plays in L1O. I'm not sure why Montreal doesn't seem interested in the PLSQ.

Having MLS reserve clubs in a CPL2 would make sense if we get to the point where a CPL2 makes sense.

Thanks again for posting these summary reports. It's very nice to be able to keep abreast of Canadians playing abroad all in one place. With our players developing as they are, I suspect this list will be getting longer and longer over the next few years.

For Borjan, transfermarkt has his value at $2.2 million. I'm surprised an MLS team would be looking to spend anything like that to acquire a keeper and then presumably use TAM to pay him and use an international roster spot. He'd be a tremendous goalie by MLS standards but most teams in a salary-capped league don't go that high on their keeper.

(I say international spot because the three Canadian MLS teams are all good to okay for keepers and certainly have higher priorities in where they'd be looking to upgrade. So I'm assuming it isn't one of them.)

Good to see us filling up the calendar. Even if we don't bring a full A team (although we might this time with a WCQ game only a few days later) there are plenty of younger guys to work into the system.

Also of note here is the $1 million transfer fee which is pretty good for a defender!

RB Alistair Johnstone joined CF Montreal from Nashville SC. He does have both Northern Ireland (UK) & Ireland (Euro) passports and there were multiple offers made for him over the past few months but Alistair was made award of this only last week, is that a common practice in MLS?

    Canada - Premier League
Halifax Wanderers' 20 years old GK Kieran Baskett opted to re-sign with the Wanderers instead of accepting an offer to train with an MLS club. He was fantastic for the club taking the #1 spot away from Christian Oxner. Convincing young players to chose CPL in their developmental years is key to the success of the league

I'd rather see him start in the CPL than end up on the bench in MLS or elsewhere. That said, I'm surprised he wouldn't at least train with them. A lot of players do for the experience even if they don't end up signing elsewhere.

I'm looking forward to seeing who gets picked for the NT roster for the upcoming matches. Normally a big part of the roster plays in MLS but they are currently out of season. Maybe Herdman still goes with his regulars or maybe someone new who is playing in Europe gets a chance.
