On Boyd, in our defense, he has fallen off the face of the earth. I doubt that even New Zealand rate him that highly... unless they’re just looking for a warm body and needed him because of resume alone.

Is Boyd even getting playing time? IIRC, he was offered to come to MLS last year but he refused. He would have gotten better looks and playing time over here.

Nah. Based on who they called up in this past window for their match against Gambia................Boyd would likely be in the group. They're calling up players like Elliot Collier of Chicago.
    Shrug. Ochoa is only 20.
For a keeper that's really young.
So we'll just have to see how he develops.

Mexico just got another lottery ticket of a young keeper into their system. If it doesn't work out...............whatever.

What was Matt Turner doing when he was 20?

It’s possible. Heck anything is possible. But I don’t see the makings of a good goalkeeper. Could I be wrong? Of course. But even when he was with the USMNT, I was mostly excited just because he was young and there was no one else. On the other hand, I would be much more disappointed if Slonina switched to Poland or whoever. Slonina seems like the type who isn’t going to be in MLS long. Again... could I be wrong? Of course. But that’s just my opinion.

He's getting little playing time in Turkey.

Yeah, it’s too bad. I had high hopes for Boyd. He had some moment in a USA shirt where I felt he’d be a contributor. He’s really disappeared…

There are some others who have also disappeared too - Amon and Otawosie, etc. Are they still playing?

He had the misfortune of switching to us literally one year before we added another 4 elite wingers to a pool that already included at least 2 good ones. That made him drop from like 3rd or 4th best in the pool, to like 10th or 11th best. It would have been a great switch in almost any other decade, he just did it just in time for us to develop essentially a dozen legit options as good or better than what we rolled out in the 90's and aughts for the most part (and even better in comparison to the past decade).

Central American media reporting that LAFC keeper Tommy Romero has accepted a call-up by Hugo and El Salvador. We'll see.

I was way dumb too when I was that age but I was also smart enough to know to not go around shooting my mouth off and saying stupid shit in a public arena. No love lost over this tool.

The NT confirmed the call-up. It's only a friendly, so they may have used that to convince him to give it a shot.

I get a weird vibe from Ochoa.

That's an unusual comment after you've just won a road playoff game as a team. Why would that even be running thru your head? I get that it's kinda said in jest. Maybe he and Pepi are friends. I don't know.

What is this even about? Can't listen from work, and am totally confused by it. Is the material underneath the quote from the tweeter or from Ochoa? I find it all baffling.

He seems like one of those guys with a huge chip on his shoulder, which, warranted or (most likely) not, he uses to motivate himself. As a Steelers fan, I remember when Antonio Brown was in his prime, and pretty much everyone was saying that he was arguably the best receiver in the league, he would still come into training camp every year talking about how no one respects him. Obviously, he turned out to be a head case, but this false belief that he didn't get any respect drove him to train like crazy and really elevate his game.

    Who knows?

What I do know is that chicks dig goals. Since 1996 a goalkeeper hasn't won Rookie of the Year or Young Player of the Year. Since 2010, I think only one defender has won it.

David Ochoa didn't finish in the top 5 of the voting. 2nd place was Taj Buchanon and 3rd was Julian Araujo. Ochoa didn't actually do anything to stand out this season.

It's just a really silly comment from what seems like a guy who makes a lot of silly comments.

On the Futbol Americas show on ESPN, Ochoa was interviewed and he was basically say he and Pepi are friends and it was all in good fun.

Still the whole thing strikes me as a bit odd. I will say with both Pepi and Araujo we heard a ton about how Berhalter was in touch and doing what he could to keep them in the USMNT fold. Successfully for Pepi and unsuccessfully for Araujo. I do think it’s telling that we never heard of a similar effort when it came to Ochoa.

Were Ochoa and Pepi on many of the same US youth teams/camps together?

Not a ton. They were both at the U23 camp prior to the Olympic qualifying campaign. Ochoa made the roster and Pepi didn't. That wasn't a surprise as it was before Ricardo's breakout MLS campaign.

he was on the roster- and has a winners medal- of an actual tournament with us. between team meals and training and visits to the local zoo or whatever they do im not sure lack of being in touch was a huge factor...

I mean this is certainly quite different from what we’ve heard from virtually every dual national

    https://theathletic.com/2996313/202...-little-fun-in-it/?source=user_shared_article

My relationship with Gregg was whatever. I had more of a relationship with his goalkeeper coach (Aron Hyde) than with him, which is how it is in general. But he’s a good guy. I was disappointed not to get on the field. I found it a little disrespectful, especially given the fact that it was on my home field. American soccer as a whole is progressing. As we saw recently they made the top 10 rankings. So they’re coming along.

Could it be that Ochoa, regardless of national team choice, was always a total d-bag?
