???? The Revs aren't champions partly because they didn't play every other team during the season. US leagues tend to have "unbalanced" schedules because they want teams to have the opportunity to play every other team but due to the overwhelming travel requirements they don't play them every season. So it's all sorted out during b the playoffs. Seattle had every chance to win the Western Conference during the regular season and blew it. They had the chance to win last night and blew it. They had home advantage, which is statistically huge in MLS, and blew it. They had the advantage of playing on their own artificial turf and blew it. They have noone to blame but themselves.
While this is absolutely true, RSL didn’t really do anything to deserve the win, either. They played to get to pens and highlighted the worst aspect of the playoff setup. While distances might be part of the reason American leagues play unbalanced schedules, the main reason is that there are too many teams to schedule it and also have playoffs. Especially in sports like football, where there are only 16 games.
Seattle didn't deserve the win either. If you want to a true champion you have to overcome all sorts of hurdles. RSL were significantly weakened by the absence of Albert Rusnak due to Covid, so they went negative. It worked out for them.
I had a longer comment that I deleted about how Seattle lost steam at a particularly bad time, playoffs or otherwise, but I agree with what you’re saying. Neither of these teams should really be anywhere near a championship right now. Single elimination playoffs make RSL’s tactic effective, which sucks though.
in europe There is 3 competitions now . there is champions league /CL, europa league/EL and conference league/AGAIN CL
Just consider MLS a continental competition. The Revs won the East, the Rapids won the West, now we have the post-season.
They did, and while I think there’s a difference between “no shot on frame” vs “no shot”, neither sounds like a particularly sound mark of a worthy champion. But, then again, we probably have more shitty Super Bowls than not, too.
Huh. I didn't realize there was a Conference League. There's room for a competition for smaller leagues who don't usually make the EL group stage but letting teams like Spurs and Feyenoord in sort of ruins their chances of any silverware.
Well some would argue that Feyenoord and Spurs are small clubs..... Speaking of small clubs: RBNY's manager/head coach is linked with a move to Werder Bremen https://www.onceametro.com/2021/11/...truber-move-to-werder-bremen-sifting-in-again
I've said this before in this thread, but I'd LOVE it if the two conferences were run as separate, single-table leagues, and then the champion of each met for MLS Cup. BUT...this is the USA, and playoffs are a thing here whether Europeans like it or not. I cannot fault MLS for believing from the get-go that they should feature playoffs in an effort to attract American fans, and after a quarter century it's hard to see them ever going away.
Me too. I don't think people are that excited about NY playing LA. The only teams I'd miss playing are Portland and Seattle.
If you truly believe (as I'm sure you do) that the MLS regular season is like watching paint dry, then you obviously are not a fan of any particular MLS team, and have never experienced the agony of watching your team teeter on the brink of qualifying or not qualifying for the playoffs. My team has currently made the playoffs four seasons in a row, but it didn't used to be like that. Season after season it didn't.

Then I presume that you also dislike the World Cup, the European Championship and the UEFA Champions League, in each of which a half or more of the teams in the group stage advance to the knockout rounds. Actually, I do wish that the MLS playoffs had fewer teams. I grew up in an era when only two of 16 major league baseball teams and only two out of 12 NFL teams made the postseason. But I enjoy playoffs and am not prepared to throw the baby out with the bathwater. However, my comment was not about the playoffs, but about the regular season, which you regard as being like watching paint dry. My comment was that the regular season's effect on who does and who doesn't make the playoffs makes the regular season exciting, at least to me. Whether the bar for making the playoffs is set too high or too low (and I agree with you that MLS sets it too low), it's still the bar.
Talking about Feyenoord, I understand alot of people are happy te Kloese moves from LAG to us. Something about him being a lure for double nationality American/Mexicans to chose for the Mexicans. What influence can a Dutchman have on the choice between USA or Mexico?
