not an single American on FIFA's annual best 12 players list. Only one Canadian despite the Olympic gold medal. The Chelsea had six players nominated despite loosing the Champions League final pretty badly 4-1 & it's almost comical how badly that club gives up goals lately. I've read Alexis Puetellas of Barca/Spain has the inside track to win the final MVP for the year, but it just seems FIFA doesn't pay that much atttention to woso. Still, another indication that we need new blood?

Looks like they based everything on the Olympics outcome with regards to the Americans.

That actually makes sense since the Olympics represent the only meaningful minutes any woman has played in the last three+ years.
I have not recently looked at FIFA's methodology for player or team ratings but, after the last WWC, US players have really done nothing except play in the NWSL and, if we are being honest the play in the NWSL has been VERY weak with many many missed passes and poor decisions.
We played poorly and stupidly in the Olympics and nothing since then has shown any improvement for any player. It is like the WWC represented the best of the USWNT and, as soon as it was over, the US players made no improvements and most grew steadily worse.
Maybe the new young players like Pugh and Rodman and many others will shake of the blahs they are playing under and jump back to the level they belong at. However the NWSL must improve for that to happen quickly.
We still have some time to get things righted before the WWC (Note: I do not consider WWC qualifying as an opportunity for improvement as the only team of any note besides the USWNT is Canada and even should we lose to Canada we will qualify as there is no other team in CONCACAF that offers any threat.
I REALLY wish meaningful steps would get taken to improve the women's game in CONCACAF but, what little action there is get quashed or reduced in effectiveness by the misogynistic bigoted leaders of CONCACAF.

But it will be interesting to see what happens and to find out if the NWSL can approach their promise.

One more thing: It might be that the best long term outcome for the USWNT is to lose big in both matches in Australia. However it really does not matter much at this point. A few friendlies, regardless of results, will not "fix" the problems with the USWNT.

35K - D*mn. Largest away, non-WWC crowd since Vancouver Canada (28K) at the end of 2017?!? Of course, that's like a northern suburb of Seattle.:D:D:D

The obvious scientific reason it that the Aussie's know Complete and Total Awesomeness when they see it.

Hopefully, the Aussie's and Kiwi's will save a few tickets in 19 months for lil ol' me. That's right my little soccer buddies.......19 months.

Why the Matildas can defy world rankings and beat the U.S.

The Matildas have returned to home soil looking to take down world number one the United States.

After beating and drawing with Brazil last month, Australia will face an even sterner test against the USWNT, who will be looking to defend their Women's World Cup crown Down Under in 2023.

Tony Gustavsson's side have enjoyed a turbulent 2021 but will be desperate to end the year on a high.

Despite currently being ranked 10 places behind the U.S. in the FIFA world rankings, the Matildas are more than capable of pulling off an upset.

Here's why the Matildas can beat the United States...

Just read that Emily Fox may not be able to play. Probably from the last game she played with Racing.

if you look at the 18 Americans on the 1st & 2nd NWSL all-star teams, only one(Horan-on the 2nd squad) is an USWNT regular. Maybe that's our problem?(out best aren't on our national team)

This season was so disjointed for USWNT players that their relative skill levels are quite hard to evaluate looking at the NWSL matches. But you might be correct as their is little else to explain how most of the US players suddenly seem to have become "average." But, as I said earlier, the NWSL has not looked good this year (too much VERY sloppy play) so performing any realistic player evaluation, relative to other players in other leagues worldwide, is nearly impossible.

Also, and I know many others do not agree, is poor coaching on the USWNT that has hampered the ability of many players to keep their game at a high level.

It is also hard to know what any USWNT player could have done if fully invested in the NWSL.

I choose to believe that the pandemic, for some reason, hurt the USWNT players more than it hurt the players from Europe and Asia. It has been a tough year for soccer in general and, it is hoped, the upcoming year will be better.

BTW: The management failures of the NWSL has exacerbated all the other problems so this year could well have made itself a write off for women's soccer in the US. I would not be surprised if some, perhaps many, women in the NWSL decide to end their soccer careers as they feel unsafe with such poor and dangerous leadership. Also anyone that thinks a few firings and many verbal platitudes will cure the problem is deluding themselves.
I do not know what it will take to "fix" the problems in the NWSL and at the USWNT level but I do believe that what has happened so far is only like placing a band aid on a severed artery and expecting the blood spurts to stop before death.

I think you are on to something

I do not think it is that.
I think it may be that your best players do not give it all in the League (NWSL). Since they get more money from the WNT spot, get pulled from NWSL to play in the WNT that is kind of logical for them to see WNT as the important part and NWSL just as a fun way to keep in form between WNT mission.
But from my European view*, if you aren't putting it all out their when playing your club soocer your International play is going to suffer.

    * Which I know is very club-centric.

That is quite true. Even on the men's side it is clear that most players club play is directly related to play for their country and visa-versa. But good club play does not mean good international play much of the time. But, usually, bad club play means bad international play except for a very very very few players that always play better for country than club.

We have a problem in this country's women's soccer programs because of the disparity in compensation between country and club. That will unfortunately continue until women's club soccer is able to support the women's wealth in the way that men's soccer has even here in the US.

But nothing will happen until the women's programs rid themselves of their attempts at making "different but equal" actually work for the pay structures. Right now the women continue to hurt themselves by their insistence of guaranteed income from US soccer.

The NWSL really needs, somehow, to get enough butts in the seats for all matches and get the level of play up enough so that they can expand and have a second tier like the men with pay good enough to keep players playing in the "second" division interest in trying to advance to the NWSL.

The MLS almost failed because of low attendance early and men's soccer, at the beginning of the MLS had a MUCH larger following in the US than women's soccer does now.

The NWSL, at least in the playoffs this year, has shown a rather low level of skill and that needs to improve for the NWSL to be a real feeder for the USWNT.

I would like to see the NWSL not continue expansion as I believe that more teams, for now, means lower overall skill.

I really hope that the NWSL really improves but I doubt that can happen until players can be payed based on ability and not their political ability to make themselves attractive to US soccer. US women's soccer is not really merit based but, rather, it is based on politics. That is a recipe for failure.

Yes the women should be paid at the same level as the men but that pay must be proceeded by an increase in the quality of play in the NWSL.

But keep in mind, out of 22 US Olympians, only 1 made the NWSL all-star team( about 4%)
    whereas 1 out of 1 from Great Britain(Rachel Daly)made the NWSL all-stars(that’s 100%)

At least 6 Olympics had more playing time than 2nd team pick, Balcar(1209 mins for the season)

I don't know much about the NWSL because I mostly follow the WSL league and so I am very curious as to what will happen in terms of the dynamics with the league and the USWNT if the latter starts failing in the world stage ie the recent olympics..., world cup, and so on. Do you think the league will fail as well given that these players do help a lot in pulling numbers with their popularity, and if they don't win the world cup for example then how much would that affect them? It just seems to me that this league is just a gym or playground for the national team in which they can just weave in and out being treated as royalties while them modest girls breaking their backs for the love of just playing this beautiful game will be shunned to the bench.

It "may" not help but most (all?) events on FS2 are also streamed on the Fox app. Many hotels allow devices, like the Roku or the Shield TV or the Fire TV to be hooked up to in room TVs. The limit there is that many hotels do not have even decent internet connections and that may prevent streaming.

Also, almost all sports bars have FS2 as an option.

There are a number of possibilities but FOX does not have much respect for soccer and even less for women's soccer so the fact that there is streaming or viewing possibilities at all in the US is a plus.

The NWSL is in a very fragile position and further losses or poor performances in the WWC or Olympics will endanger its survival. The problem really is that the NWSL sits in a very fragile position and just about any real negative performances could well spell trouble. Of course part of the NWSL is aided by MLS teams in the same market or even directly lending support to the teams.

The NWSL will succeed or fail based on its ability to get real support from the US sports community. That means getting butts in the seats and retaining or getting at least decent TV numbers and that is not happening, yet.

I have hopes that everything will work out but, judging by their actions so far, it looks like the officials of the NWSL are doing all they can to see to it that the league fails. They do not need a good monetary TV contract but the do need a TV contract that gives them the widest exposure possible and hiding the games like they have been doing does not do that.

I hope the NWSL survives and becomes a really good league for development but, right now, I believe there are at least three other leagues in the world that will make for better development. People keep saying that the pay is the problem but I believe the real problem is the politics and it is politics that will kill the league. Also if the level of play goes up the revenue will improve and that will lead to better pay in all women's leagues world wide.

I also believe that the women themselves by getting the "guaranteed" contract they negotiated for have taken a huge step toward killing the NWSL. Greed at the top is a real problem that needs to be solved before the NWSL can become the stage for women's soccer in this country.

11 of the 22 are presumed to be in the future of the USWNT; and several of the other 11 are not US players, and one at least is retired from international play.

Your complaint/suggestion seems to me both dated and not entirely accurate...

    Starting XI:

Most capped is Horan so she gets the captain's armband. Average caps of the starting XI is 34. Murphy gets her first!

The US Soccer website gives some of the info on age that we want to know here:
"The average age of the Starting XI is 26 years, making it youngest starting lineup to take the field for the USWNT since April 5, 2018. This will be the first time since April 9, 2013, that the USA has deployed a Starting XI with every player under the age of 30."

Macario has a minor groin strain and is unavailable. Smith is in concussion protocol. Bixby, Dahlkemper, and Dorsey are the others who do not dress for the 18 today.
