Man, funny how ahead of us Brazil were technically (and tactically), but how behind they were physically. Our guys will probably never match some of theirs technically, and they'll certainly match the Americans some day physically. The Brazilian with the dirty cut/nutmeg that almost came off at 4-0 was 17!

Kudos to the team for fighting until the 94th minute. Cool to see Sonogo. The TUDN guys were extremely explicit that he was born and raised in Germany, the German capital, trained at Union Berlin, the classic of the Bundisliga, the liga in Germany, etc. He had a few good moments.

Leyva did look a bit outmatched physically but showed well once the game was already decided. McGlynn for me was worked, badly, and it made me realize there's a certain archetype that is often trotted out in the US program: big, rangy, slow CDM type guy who can pass long. Watching against a far, far more skilled and cagey Brazil side was eye opening. Hope the kid can improve, he looked spent at the end but his corners were still decent. Not sure if he can overcome some big deficiencies at this level though.

All in all, fun to see this kind of game, was played at a really high level. Guys on both sides were completely spent -- Brazil might have to call up some replacements for some of their guys who went off.

1 - Naciemiento can play stoned.
    Lol, he was excellent
2 - Cowell hasn’t started the transition from accessory player to featured player
He is a physical marvel at this level though
    7 - Brazil’s keeper
He may have been Brazil's best player. made some great stops.
9 - Our shape was best defined as asymmetrical chaotic
Center mid too soft, outside D too unsupported/not good enough

Bad first half. The second half we looked better but it wasn't enough.
Let's see ... there were very weak performances, but we have to think that this team trained 2 days together, with a coach who did not choose the roster and who took office less than a week ago. USSF is an absolute disaster, they should hire a coach with a long-term project. The result is humiliating? yes, but we have seen this with the U17 team in the England tournament before COVID. I am sure of the individual talent of each player, but if they do not train with a good coach they will not be able to flourish.

Probably because Brazil took their starters off. Unlike us they know who are starters who are subs.

As bizarre as it is to say, I was listening to a podcast the other day mentioning the ridiculous inability to find a coach and thought to myself: “This probably wasn’t the right way to market our program to Sonogo and other dual nats. It just makes us look like idiots.”

1 - Nacimiento heard “pre-game” and called his guy. It took him to cosmic levels. He’s probably asleep in the locker room now though.

2 - Cowell looked like a werewolf among boys. Had the touch and vision of a werewolf as well.

    7 - He’s also a physical marvel.

I mostly blame the Fed for this dismal performance.

    1) They've held almost no camps at the youth level for far too long. You can blame the pandemic, but it still seems mismanaged relative to other peer programs.

    2) They insist on mandating a naive playing style at every level that consistently underperforms our talent level. Tab Ramos is really the only coach that has somewhat overcome it since we started employing this asinine system.

I also blame the USWNT for filing an intellectually dishonest and self-serving lawsuit that drained money and resources from the rest of the program and ultimately contributed to the suspension of youth camps. While I have a ton of sympathy for the many, many legitimate victims of gender-based discrimination, I have an equal amount of disdain for those who unjustly allege it for self gain.

    Fulltime. Brazil wins 4-0.

I'm not going to act like a 4-0 defeat isn't bad because there is a lot that wasn't good, but it wasn't as terrible as the score suggests. Brazil had 5 or 6 shots on goal. We might've even had as many shots on goal as them. The possession couldn't have been more than 60/40 either. It might've even been 55/45. The difference was that Brazil capitalized on our errors, and our chances weren't the most threatening.

The first half was much worse than the second half. The first half the offense was nonexistent. The players were all in the wrong positions. They couldn't hold the ball for more than 10 seconds before turning it over. The fullbacks struggled with positioning (and also diving in and missing for Che). It left the backline terribly exposed on the counter because we would push numbers forward, easily lose it, and then Brazil is running right at us. It was a pretty bad recipe, although it wasn't like they were dominating us. They were the more cohesive team and more clinical.

The second half was pretty even. Brazil scored again off a turnover, this one from the defense. I don't even have much to blame about that one. I thought that was very well executed off a weird type of sequence where no one did much wrong. Later in the game, we were the better offensive team. We had a few nice shots, and the Brazilian keeper made some saves. Brazil let up late on, but they weren't bossing the game at any point.

As for the players, I only thought a few players played well. From the starters, Jalen Neal was really good. I thought he was MOTM on our side. Didn't do anything wrong, which in a 4-0 defeat is pretty good for a CB. He made some nice defensive interceptions, and had some nice passes from the back. He looked in control, which most of the team didn't. I liked Leyva's play. It's also hard to play well as a #6 when you lose 4-0, but he did. He made 6-7 interceptions, had some nice passes to start attacks, and had two shots on goal, including our best attempt of the game. He certainly wasn't out of place defensively or athletically, like people thought he would be.

Gutierrez late on was the best of the subs. He had some offensive ideas. Not great, but an improvement on the starters. Greene also had some nice moments on both sides of the ball at LB. Sanogo was another that I thought was more positive than negative.

Aaronson was mostly neutral. Tough game for an attacker when everyone around you is struggling. He didn't create much, but he didn't struggle when he got touches. Sealy caused danger, but he's clearly not a LW. He couldn't do anything with the positions he put himself in because he's a one-footed player. I question the decision to play him at LW. He was better when moved to the other side.

McGlynn, Walls, and Wiley weren't too bad on the balance. McGlynn and Wiley both made crucial errors that costed us the first two goals. Aside from that, they played well. Can you play well when you cost your team a goal? It's hard to, but I thought McGlynn actually held up well enough defensively, the passing is there, the soccer IQ. It all translated. His error was very uncharacteristic with a poorly weighted back pass. Wiley got skinned on the first goal. He was way out of position. After that, he wasn't very noticeable. Thats not too bad. I don't think he's ready for this level, but he settled in well enough. Walls was called for a PK, but it was McGlynn's fault. Aside from that, he was decent enough. I thought he made some nice defensive plays, and a few nice passes. He was strong in challenges.

Clark had almost no involvement. He's not a false 9. He had very few touches. Cowell tried hard, but very ineffective. Turned the ball over almost every time he touched the ball. He's also best suited centrally, not on the wing, IMO. Slonina was shaky. I don't think you could say he was terrible or at fault for any of the goals, but he did not look like he had command of what he was doing. He could've certainly done better on two of the goals, and might've gotten very lucky his save bounced off the post on another one that looked like it shouldn't have been very difficult.

Che struggled a lot in the first half. He had some good offensive sequences, which is why I like him at RB. He can bring a dynamic element offensively to the RB position with good athleticism. Defensively, I don't think he's usually as bad as he was. It was a little uncharacteristic, although he does need to work on his defending. In this game he dove in way too much and almost never won the ball. He was also caught way too high up the field. He was better in the second half, like most players and I'm not going to hold his worst performance of the season against him, but he wasn't very good.

Luna and Pierre weren't very noticeable coming on as subs.

I played with guys who did that. The squint-eyed struggle with head tilted forward against the driving 0 mph winds gives it away.

USSF should pick it up a notch and hire a coach just before kick off next time.

I've either played very well or very terribly while high, usually the latter.

Winners: Dual nationals that picked to represent Mexico in this tournament.

Losers: Dual nationals that chose to represent the USA and were subject to the clownshow of nearly zero preparation before playing against Brazil's best. Are there any highlights in that game that a USA player's agent can use to market their clients? Most people are just going to catch the highlights and what are they going to see?

    Four......Easy.......Goals

    Yes, for both teams.

Second half Brazil's B team came in, scored one, and stopped caring.

I’ll go back and read the thread, but based on that game the US better win the WC before that group is responsible for supplying full team players. They were awful. Was 19 supposed to be Cade Cowell? I thought he was supposed to be good. He wasn’t even passable. And Che got beat over and over again down his side. I’d heard the keeper was good? Nope. Maybe it was an off night, but they looked worse in every facet. Brazil showed immensely more ball skill and basic tactical awareness. Ugly.

The rose colored glasses are thick with this one.

Brazil could have scored 8 if they thought they had needed to.

I'll be more charitable to you than you were to them as individuals. But you're not contextualizing info properly, nor taking heed to history.

We stunk in the last u-17 WC too. Lost 4-0 to Netherlands and 4-1 to Senegal. Yet that team has already produced Reyna, Pepi, Scally, Busio, & Bello as senior int'ls who have varying degrees of bright futures. Could they not significantly contribute to WC contention?

And these players had more unfavorable variables than them. They played with the same finesse mf & under the same rigid, mismatched tactic of "play out of the back, it's in our DNA". But they also hadn't trained together and their coach was just picked up off the scrap heap at the last minute. To boot they were playing Brazil, at high altitude, on a choppy field we notoriously struggle on because of how much we play on pristine pitches. Our senior team even does this. Not only happened at Panama, but w/ the A-team at El Salvador too.

I don't know if there's a Reyna here, but it'll have more players who could contribute to a WC contender than that one. And as you see from that list, it was no slouch.

I hope you’re right. I remember thinking some individuals on that U17 had some tools. I can forgive the disjointed team play today, but the player skill level (other than Aaronson) looked to my eye to be really disappointing. I probably was being harsh after watching Brazil walk over them, but I have heard so much promoting of players like cowell that to see them play like this really leaves a sour taste. I kept reading that cowell was going to be on the GC squad I think. But every player for Brazil looked more talented.
