heh their "crest explanation" says the two stars are for the two states KS & MO... They're not fooling anyone, it's clearly an attempt to claim the two FCKC championships as part of their history.

NWSL's best for 2021. As rated by Fotmob and compiled by me.

Rookie of the year: Trinity Rodman, Washington (this is a no-brainer.)
Most valuable player: Caprice Dydasco, Right Back, Gotham. (Surprise! but she has the highest Fotmob rating of any player in the league.

    Best XI:
    Defenders:
Caprice Dydasco -- Gotham -- Right back 7.85
Carson Pickett -- NC-- Left Back 7.53
Paige Nielsen -- Wash -- Center back 7.29
Emily Sonnett -- Wash -- Center back 7.29

Note: Sofia Huerta, Right Back, OL, played 8 matches at Right Back with a rating of 7.85, but had an overall rating for the season at all positions of 7.31. So, taken purely as a right back, she might be put on the best XI.

    Midfielders:
    Morgan Gautrat -- Chi 7.74
    Marta -- Orlando 7.67
    Kristie Mewis -- Houston 7.56

Note: I made the arbitrary decision that to be eligible a player had to appear in 15 NWSL matches. Lindsey Horan appeared in 14 matches and had a rating of 7.75.

    Forwards:
    Mallory Pugh -- Chicago 7.56
    Trinity Rodman -- Washington 7.55
    Rachel Daly -- Houston 7.54

Note: It's interesting that the two top scorers in the league, Hatch for Washington and Balcer for OL Reign didn't have the highest ratings. Neither had any assists.

    Second XI
    Defenders:
Natalia Kuikka -- Portland -- Right Back 7.43
Meghan Klingenberg -- Portland -- Left Back 7.43
Emily Menges -- Portland -- Center Back 7.25
Abby Erceg -- NC -- Center Back 7.23

    Midfielders:
Jess Fishlock -- OL Reign 7.53
    Raquel Rodriguez -- Portland 7.51
    Angela Salem -- Portland 7.51

    Forwards:
    Midge Purce -- Gotham 7.54
Eugenie Le Sommer -- OL Reign 7.44
    Sydney Leroux -- Orlando 7.37

If you don't mention GKs, it becomes a Best X, not a Best XI. ;)

True. I always forget about goalies -- who have different rating standards. I've been most impressed with Bledsoe of Washington and Sheridan of Gotham.

But don't forget 2019, when voters seemed to vote on the basis of how many headlines a player got, and a USWNT star who only played six NWSL games that season was named to the Best XI. Strange things can happen.

Well, Smallchief did state (in the very first line) that it was just a Fotmob rating, so voting bias was thrown out of that particular post to begin with. Bringing it up is a bit weird in that context.

That said, at least the USWNT had a fairly forgettable year, so hopefully that lessens the cult-of-personality bias when the voting does come around. The only real headline-ing WNTer this year is Lloyd simply because she's hanging up her boots, and she's still in the Fotmob top 15 for league play, so it wouldn't be so bad to see her included when votes are counted.

Yes, I realized that it was a Fotmob rating. I didn't miss that.

I was just trying to say, apparently not clearly enough, that we shouldn't expect that objective measurement like this will necessarily be reflected in the Best XI named by the league.

As I said, strange things can happen.

NWSL getting a shout-out in a FiveThirtyEight article about a Sportlogiq experiment that turns soccer broadcasts into stick-figure renders to look into the bias of race and gender in soccer:
    https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/soccer-looks-different-when-you-cant-see-whos-playing/
They compared NWSL to England's fourth-tier men's league, where attendances are lower but pay is higher, and - surprise surprise - while respondents preferred the men's games as live broadcasts, they preferred NWSL as renders.
Not a perfect experiment, as the sample size was small and incredibly homogeneous, but it still tracks.

    https://www.parksidecards.com/collections/soccer/products/2021-nwsl-premier-series-vol-2

If you are interested you can buy the Volume 2 series cards that just came out at $10. I guarantee price will go up as time goes by and all sold out and you can only get it on Ebay which will be 2 to 3 times more than what it is right now. I already bought 10! I regret not getting the Volume 1 set, I was assuming I could get any at Walmart or Target but they didn't sell it at my local area.

    News on the Spirit sale:
The team* is in exclusive sale negotiations with The St. James, a local sports performance center who will keep the Spirit in the DC area.

*As already mentioned, Baldwin & Lynch have frozen Kang out of making decisions. The St. James' offer is reportedly worth $16m; Kang's offer is reportedly worth $21m. The pettiness from those two men knows no bounds.

Everyone tells me these NWSL cards are at Target but it must be a regional thing since all 4 of my targets never even heard of these cards.

Going back to the awards discussion....

NWSL's October PotM and TotM have been announced, with Purce named October's star player and the Spirit contributing the most (4) to October's overall best team.

As awesome as it would be for Dydasco (now five Team of the Month awards this year) to get league MVP, precedent is against her: both Short/Krueger and Sauerbrunn have had 4+ Team of the Month nods in the same year before, but defenders sadly almost never get recognition outside of Defender of the Year. With no clear MVP candidates otherwise, though, Dydasco may have a chance where previous defenders failed.

That said, I would be more likely to bet on a Player of the Month [Morgan, Williams, Hatch, Rapinoe, Balcer, Purce] or a more up-field multi-TotM-winner [Leroux, Pugh, Hatch, Fishlock, Gautrat, Salem] as the eventual MVP. Hatch is the only player on both lists and won Golden Boot, so the pattern of the Boot winner also getting MVP would not be unjustified. There's no way she doesn't make at least Second XI, and honestly I expect her on the First XI even if she's more of a poacher than a creator.

Not sure who gets Goalie of the Year - should be Bledsoe or Sheridan but these awards get *very* skewed by fan voting so it'll likely be Harris or Bixby - but Rookie=Rodman and Defender=Dydasco for sure.

So... How did Casey Murphy get left off the finalists for GKOY?!?

I mean, I didn't mention her as one of the four possibilities in my previous post. Even though she's tied for most saves, she's third or fourth in saves/90, and worth noting that Betos (the other tied for most saves) played fewer matches and also isn't nominated. I think Bixby and Sheridan are fairly obvious choices, so the argument may be with Bledsoe? You have the fact that the Spirit are 3rd while the Courage are 6th, which might be further emphasized by a bit of recency bias (Spirit undefeated in last nine played games vs Courage having just one win in their last nine). Also, while neither player won a Save of the Week, I think Bledsoe got nominated more than Murphy did, so she makes a bigger impact on games.

Spirit sweep the last two awards as Rodman wins RotY and Bledsoe wins GKotY

I believe this is the second time where the First XI GK didn't win GK of the Year. IDK why NWSL keeps the voting channels separate, buuuut.....
