I'm sounding like a broken record on this, but here I go anyway: The highways leading from Randall's Island are so limited (one bridge to Queens, one bridge to the Bronx and one bridge to Manhattan) that if there were an MLS-sized stadium on Randall's Island, the traffic jam after a game would last for hours and hours. It is possible to walk to the subway from Icahn, but the nearest subway station is a mile away, at 125th and Lexington in Manhattan. I suspect that when Icahn was built, the size was chosen on the basis of how large a crowd could effectively be moved off of Randall's Island after an event.
There's a $6.55 to $10.17 toll to drive across the RFK Bridge from Manhattan, Queens or The Bronx to the Randall's Island exit. The only transit is a bus that is always late due to traffic on Lexington Avenue and East 124th St and always seems to be packed. I don't think shuttle busses would work due to the amount of traffic. When I ran at Icahn I walked/jogged 1.4 miles from 125th Street Station but it's a very narrow pathway over the bridge and isn't practical for large crowds. East Harlem at 125th St is also one of the few dodgy areas left in Manhattan. There are also no bars or restaurants within a mile of the stadium. It would also mean a running track plus the stadium is heavily used, so turf. There is though lots of parking space once you get there, which is fine for the 40% of New Yorkers who have cars.
https://www.frontrowsoccer.com/2022...sted-in-a-nycfc-stadium-but-nothing-specific/ Saying that the club had a “maximum level of urgency to make” a new stadium happen as soon as possible, New York City FC chairman Brad Sims on Thursday did not offer any concrete plans for a permanent home. Sims said there were a few areas in the city that was interested, wasn’t specific on where they were.
I no longer live in Brooklyn but I still hope they go to Queens - I think it's a perfect location with perhaps none of the NIMBY fights.
Wouldn't it be separate though? I haven't looked at it in a while but I wasn't sure if CitiField parking woudl be required.
Willets Point, the warren of auto-repair shops that for generations sat on a muddy peninsula between the Mets' ballpark and Flushing Creek, has been targeted for an overhaul ever since "the Mets' ballpark" still meant Shea Stadium. if they build there...you need to have parking...Cohen is going to want his hand in the pie
Still don't understand why they didn't partner with CFG - would have been a better fit than the Yankees.
According to Sam Stejskal of the Athletic earlier this week, Queen's Willets Point has emerged as location favorite for NYCFC stadium. No official word from City Football Group, MLS Commissioner Don Garber nor NYC Mayor Eric Adams as of yet.
Well to be honest - since I’ve moved out of the city I don’t care quite as strongly, I just greatly prefer that Queens location for a lot of reasons. Not sure what % Yankees now own but whatever it takes to get the stadium done asap.
NIMBY is why Willets Point wasn't redeveloped when Bloomberg tried a decade ago. In Willets Point, Workers and a Resident Fight On
So maybe I’m confused but I thought some area near there was already zoned and could be used for building a stadium but it’s been a long time since I read about it.
Some was zoned for public housing. There were another 17 acres where various options were being discussed. This made a flurry of news in 2019 but not much since. This was one of the proposals.
----------------------------- That looked like a fairly decent mixed use plan, considering the lack of large pieces of property in NY metro area. The 2 stadiums would be pretty close to each other and both summer sports, so would you really have to schedule soccer in when baseball is out of town? That would almost be like NYCFC has now with the Yankees, but in this case, using 2 stadiums instead of one.
If I remember correctly the stadium plan that the Yankees basically killed would have included verbage that the soccer team wouldn't schedule games at the same time. Same day? Yes a 1pm game isn't going to cause issues if the Yankees play at 630pm or later, but the Yankees HAD to change the deal last minute and that's what did an assured deal in. The held a special session just to rubber stamp a stadium deal the Yankees initially signed off on and then they got greedy and the board told them and NYCFC to F off. I think they were supposed to remove the mind but they changed their mind about that too. Realistically though, I don't think you can play a baseball game after a soccer match given how much the field cuts up and you can't play a soccer game 3 hours after a baseball game because of the potential for rain delays and extra innings. Not sure Yankees and NYCFC fans being in the same place at the same time is a good idea either.
I was talking about if NYCFC had gotten a stadium nearby. Sent from my GM1917 using BigSoccer mobile app
