Good point. Dorrance has been known for a lot of shady things with his players in the past but is still admired because of how much he wins.

it’s not just male players either. Izzo-Brown is well known for being verbally assaulting on athletes as was Wilkins during her Penn State days. Both are successful though so like Dorrance can get away with it.

Any idea on who Kentucky will look to hire? A P5 assistant? A upward trending mid-major HC?

I think that it could be a pretty good job - great facilities, in the SEC, close to some good youth soccer hot spots. I think with the right hire, it could be a program that could challenge for SEC titles.

I’m referring to a current assistant coach in NCAA D-I and the enablers that have kept him in the system.

My kid played for ‘Nova 2017-19 and opted out in 20. The guy was toxic from day one and his treatment of his players approached abusive. There were a number of specific and documented instances over every year he was there. Over time, it all adds up. Apparently, his behavior- coupled with a very poor big east record over the past two years - finally caught up with him. Team GPA has tanked as well with his recruits which used to be a source of pride at the school. One specific example I can give you will give you and idea of how much of an asshole the guy really was. 2018 season seniors were initially denied a ‘Senior Day’ celebration as McLain specifically told them that the Big East was not allowing these events. Two of the seniors actually called the Big East office in NYC to find out details. Officials indicated they had no idea what they were talking about. This just scratches the surface. So many other examples that I can specifically cite but won’t feed the trolls on here. Wish his ass would have been canned after year 1 or 2. For anyone speculating that this was just a bunch of spoiled, hard drinking kids that didn’t like discipline complaining , you are all full of crap.

There’s no use in being cryptic about who you’re referring to. Just say that it’s Tom Anagnost.

I agree, though. Curious how he ended up in Cincinnati.

Thanks for sharing. Now that we know specifics such as “initially not allowing a senior day celebration” I hope he’s never employed ever again. Gee Whillickers That Revs Me Up that he would abuse those seniors like that! If he’s willing to do that and go that far and cause that much harm- he probably violated sections 13.4 of his contract also (which is a fireable offense):

13.4 As the leader of the Villanova Women’s Soccer Program I shall not express frustration or disappointment or most importantly steal one’s confidence due to crosses constantly going out of bounds, our inability to execute a throw-in, etc. but rather provide constant positive reinforcement deeming those soccer actions as unlucky or say good job as said player is being bravely vulnerable by receiving 50k a year to play soccer and attend school.

He is a as*hole if he lied to his seniors about a senior day celebration. Think about how petty that is. What exactly is he trying to accomplish here. He is supposed to be the team's leader (head coach) and he allegedly lied to his team, throwing the conference office under the bus with a made up story. Who the f*ck does that?!

Was trying to provide one small example of the type of behavior and actions displayed during his tenure. No need to go into the numerous times that the kids were called in to the athletic office to discuss the coaches behavior or the group sessions held to confront the coach re: same. It was bad, really bad. Would love to provide a bunch more examples over the course of the last 5 years but will not do it on an anonymous public forum.

^ don’t feel as if you need to confirm this.

I had heard through a second-hand source that McLain had players that were concussed not enter protocol. If so, that is horrible and in and of itself grounds for firing if it is a repeated action. Other staff should also be called into question if this happened because they would also be complicit - asst coaches, athletic trainers, etc.

I heard this secondhand so I am not 100% confident about the validity of the statement.

Yes that is true regarding concussions. Trainers have left because of him.
McLain was a disaster, inside a circus tent on & especially off the field. He was fired bc of abusive & inappropriate behavior. This will be confirmed by students accounts, the current assistant coaches who have condemned his actions and by the administration who finally were so alarmed by his behavior, fired him with only 3 games/2 weeks left of the season. Other known facts: There are NO 5th year senior(s) on the team. Most recent example, Nova just played Georgetown and there were 4 starters in their 5th year. The Nova class of 2022 started with 15 girls and only 4 remain on the team. Since 2018, over 20 girls have left the program or have transferred. Prior to this preseason, he would tell the girls who left the team to remain on the team chat so the incoming Freshman wouldn't catch on. 3 starters from 2018 transferred. At least 7 girls from the Spring season last year did not come back for this Fall season. And all during this time, there have been countless players, who by themselves and in groups, have expressed their stories to the AD office & Nova staff. Red flags all over the place. This season, he started 0-5 in the Big East and ended his career 1-6 including his last game where he lost 5-0 to Georgetown.

So where would Villanova go from here? Talked to a couple college coaches I know and they said they wouldn’t touch it. Perhaps an alum like Jill Lloyden may be interested? Concerns were:

1.) Culture of team, players that like to party
2.) Entitled rich parents of who sent their kids to private high schools or affluent area public schools and feel like now at Villanova they can complain and get their way
3.) A weak administration coupled with kids that know the buzzwords to use and will protect the players first
    4.) Subpar facilities

The parent who just posted is a great example. Based on the timing sounds like someone recruited by Kulas. She opted out of the season, so essentially she quit on her teammates, coaches, and program. The NCAA gave the opt out option for mental health concerns, but let’s be real, 90% of those kids that took it saw it as an opportunity to sit out and not do anything and still collect a scholarship (wonderful life lesson the NCAA is giving these kids before entering the real world). All you have to do is say “Thanks” for letting my kid keep her $ while not contributing anything. Instead it’s complaining of standards being enforced and now this Senior Day thing, which I again look at with healthy skepticism and those kids would have seen the same ceremonies at other Big East games and highly doubt the coach would use that as an excuse. Reeks of parent entitlement and the kids reflect that. The concussion thing - that falls on the athletic training staff. Again, calling BS on that one.

I don’t know the insides there but based on what I have heard so far I will assume this will go the Neil Maguire route and McLain will land on his feet somewhere as long as it’s with an administration with a spine. As for Villanova good luck to the next leader and whoever wants to take that on. Lloyden the only potential candidate I can think of for now.

My kid opted out because she was sick of the bullish!t she had to tolerate for 3 years and had no confidence that the coach would fully comply with COVID restrictions being placed on teams. His history indicated he would not. And her 10% that she was given to ‘quit on her program’ was an easy decision for her to make. You are correct - you don’t know the inside story. If you did you might be less likely to put it on the kids and their entitlement mentality. Guy was toxic. Period. Nothing to do with rich parents complaining about their kids fee fees getting hurt. You don’t know, you shouldn’t continue to speculate.

Stafford worked under him previously. That's how he ended up there. The writing was on the wall when he and UIC parted ways, Cincinnati also had an opening. Everyone knew he'd be there.

You do realize this is an anonymous board and nothing has been "confirmed" from within the program.[/QUOTE]
The information that was first reported by Steph80 in post 908 that McLain has been fired has definitely been confirmed by multiple sources within the program. In other words, multiple sources within the program have confirmed that a) he was fired and that b) the firing follows yet another round of investigations into reports by student-athletes of abusive behavior by McLain.

Just because it hasn't been officially announced doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

I have no idea what to make of your statements in part one of your response. Having the same rights, privileges, and liberties in no way implies complete sameness. Are we pretending here that females are identical in all ways to males? If that is your take, I've got nothing for you in this thread. If, on the other hand, you recognize that male and female athletes differ in important ways, then you should understand my point.

Regarding #2, if you read carefully, you just might notice that I did not report the news of McLain's firing. Rather, I wrote to confirm two things: firstly, that the allegations of abuse are long-standing, well-known by university administration, and meritorious; secondly, the the report of his firing--doubted her by several posters--was in fact true.

And what I said in the post you quote remains true: the details of what happened are not mine to share. Out of respect for the players involved, I will not divulge those details here. It is not possible to provide the details you seek without identifying individual players, so I won't do it. Ultimately, you--and indeed, everyone on this forum--will have to make a decision one way or the other without having all of the facts. I don't claim to have all of the facts; just enough to know that what has been reported here about abusive behavior has in no way been fabricated.

I believe we can expose him without further violating the privacy of the current and former student-athletes. What I have provided here is the best I can do in that regard.

Even if the players do not wish to make the details of their experience public? Are you saying I should disregard their wishes and tell all anyway?

I'm sorry, but no. I simply won't do that.

Villanova has done the investigations and, as I have noted elsewhere, presumably has far more information that I do (though I have enough to know the claims are real). If they or the young ladies involved wish to share the details of the situation, I will applaud them. But I strongly disagree that the problem cannot be addressed without airing all of the details to the world.

You are correct on item 4 on the list. The fields are decent for turf fields, but the locker room is atrocious, and the "stadium" boasts a pair of outhouses and a small tent in terms of "facilities". The weight room is on the main campus while everything soccer-related is on west.

On item 1, I don't see that to be any more true than at several other programs, from BE rivals to Big10 to SEC, with which I am familiar. I think that is an easy target whose accuracy is overblown.

Item 2 is impossible to argue one way or another, as you are imputing motives and desires to other persons, which can be neither confirmed nor denied from the outside.

As for item 3, I find that laughable. If the administration was indeed concerned with protecting players first, they had enough information to do just that and to end this circus by the fall of 2018 at the absolute latest. Instead, the AD's unwillingness to confront the situation has been part of the problem.

Anyway, I do agree Jill would potentially be a great hire. Based on her presence around the program at the time, I had hoped she might be interested/considered when Kulas was let go.

I understand your position, but let’s use the Paul Riley events as a case study. Back around 2015, Mana Shim told Alex Morgan what was going on. Morgan told Shim she should report it to the Thorns, which Shim did. The Thorns had an investigation done and fired Riley. The Thorns also passed the investigation results up to the NWSL office, which was housed at the US Soccer Federation. Western New York then proceeded to hire Riley as coach and, when they moved to North Carolina, he went with them. This is how this kind of stuff continues as part of our culture.

Five years later, it all comes to light after Shim and Sinead Farrelly went public and Riley is fired at North Carolina and loses his coaching license. This is how our culture gets changed.

I understand that Shim and Farrelly did not want to go public initially and I credit them for doing it now. I understand why Morgan did not want to go public. I understand why the Thorns did not. I understand why the NWSL and USSF did not, although I have less sympathy for them. There are what in the past have been considered valid excuses starting with the victims and proceeding all the way up the reporting chain.

If this kind of stuff is going to stop, however, then the excuses need to stop, no matter what they are or who is making them. I know that is an absolutist position, but I believe that unless it becomes an absolute nothing really is going to change.

Talking with a close contact in Colorado and the CO State situation is bizarre. Girls wanting the season to be over and telling recruits not to commit to CSU. I don’t have an in depth perspective of the recruiting scene out in the Rockies so the fact I’m being told this via a club coach in the area is interesting.

Back to Villanova; the senior day thing is poor. Very poor. But not a fire able offense.

I’m still waiting to hear the actual details as to why he was given the boot.

Jill Loyden to be the Villanova coach, give me a break. What.... Just because she's a woman, good pro, do you forget she has no head coaching experience and hardly any if none college coaching experience.

Probably like every male coach on here, I hate that we all get lumbered in with the McLain's of the world just because were male. Female head coaches have been fired for the same things. Villanova should look to find the right candidate that can help them win and give the players the best overall student athlete experience. Gender should play no part in it.

I definitely agree. HOWEVER...how easy we forget that civil right laws (i.e. Title IX) exist specifically because gender minorities (women), racial, and religious minorities have been dealing with this stuff for years, decades, and generations. They've been passed up for jobs that they're the best candidates for purely because they are a woman, or because they are black, or because they are Muslim, or because they are gay, etc. It still happens, we know it does. Employers/hiring managers now are just smarter about how they discriminate.

Should the best candidate be hired? Definitely.... so sorry that this could actually be a women instead of a man (or...God forbid...someone who is NON-BINARY... ::insert horror movie music here:: ).

    So glad you agree--

But I do find that your argument doesn't pass the "do you beat your spouse" test. Whereas a company or school has to prove they are so non discriminate that the only way to do that is to hire a person that meets the above.

It is happening frequently in women’s soccer now with admins only being willing to hire a female. Wyoming and Colorado State are two examples of this they were only considering females. I agree that this happened to females in the past whereby they were passed up for jobs because of gender, but ultimately two wrongs don’t make a right. As people have suggested it should simply be the best person for the position.
