I loved that show. I have all 3 seasons on DVD. You know Bruce Lee wanted that part, but they gave it to the auto-eroticist David Carradine because of Bruce's bad accent.

Wait, is that study serious? You play less minutes after returning from COVID? Well, duh. It doesn't matter what caused you to miss a game, if you miss a game you lose match fitness. Players without match fitness tends to come off the bench or be candidate to be subbed off. If you want to measure the effect of COVID on players, the control group need to be players who missed games for whatever reasons not players who didn't have COVID like in this amateurish study.

    Pulisic is out this weekend.

Like I said, he isnt tough physically. He’s in a very difficult position in his career. Taking 6 weeks to recover from this ankle injury suggests he struggles to play when not 100%

defend him, “CP does no wrong” crowd.

Defend him? I'd much rather belittle him. But if I did that, others here might suspect that I, like you, belong to the "Kick a man when he's down" crowd.

Ok, even I have to admit this has gotten ridiculous by now.
sad to say, but his CFC days are numbered. I sense even Tuchel is tired of the injuries for him.
If he wants one more big contract after Chelsea, he’ll probably have to come back to MLS. No European club in their right mind is going to pay premium dollar for him and the non-stop injuries. If he wants to stay in the Prem, he’ll have to join a mid to bottom table side. And even then they will not give him a big contract. move said it before, but I think we have our very own Jack Wilshere for the USA. And it makes me sad to compare the 2, but here we are

I seriously doubt he is a lock. They need to survive relegation, and won’t be able to buy enough players in January to make anything guaranteed. People are exaggerating how quickly they can change over the team

    Hyperbole.

If he healed 2 weeks ago he still would have been able to get a big contract from a big club, but now he crossed some imaginary line in your head so it's all over and he has to come to MLS if he wants to get paid? That's not how any of this works.

Again - what is there to defend? This is just ridiculous. 6 weeks is part of the legitimate timeline for recovering from a sprain. Depending on the severity, it could actually take a lot longer. None of us know the original severity of the injury. Better for him to come back too soon and reinjure it again?

This is not an intellectually serious post.

    All my posts are.

6 weeks for a “10 day injury” as tuchel suggested, means he isnt tough. Availability is the best ability.

He continued to play on it during the Honduras match and that made it much worse.

I've seen nothing to suggest he lacks toughness. You can't judge toughness without being medical personnel on site.

Isn't this the same dude who previously has returned from injury too soon? Yeah, it is.

The way it works is Puli needs to get medical clearance from the staff to play after being regularly assessed. And no part of that clearance involves "Christian, are you tough enough to handle the pain"?

I often wonder if some of my fellow posters (not you) have ever played soccer or - in this case - sprained an ankle. Timelines vary, based on the severity of the injury and how it was handled/treated.

I remember at least a time or two when I sprained my ankle so badly I couldn't walk properly coming off the field, but ten minutes later (with the score still tied) I was asking the coach to sub me back in (or later, subbing myself back in). Afterwards, the price (for my foolishness) was paid.

Funny aside, in my day the approach to treating such sprains was ICE (ice/compression/elevation) but that has evolved to PRICE (protection/rest/ice/compression/elevation). Some players need protection from themselves.

Some obviously haven't. You don't make it to the pros without having played thru a lot of pain along the way. Puli was fouled more times in a UCL game in the spring than any player in the last decade and played thru it.

Pain tolerance isn't the issue here. It's amusing I even have to type that.

If he's held out it's for medical reasons. The staff either gives the green light or they don't.

Ah high school junior varsity anecdotes!! Always good for a laugh comparing yourself to a professional athlete!

This is a pain tolerance injury at this point. Make excuses all you want. We are now 4x longer than what the Chelsea manager said the injury would be. Why’s that? Is tuchel not informed on Chelsea players diagnoses? We can only go off what he said originally.

(Ice) Haha- you got it exactly right. We had the world's worst trainer at our college. His philosophy was 'just tape it harder' and go....

I actually have a direct playing experience with this. (Christian type injury)

I played college soccer about 400 years ago, and would never get injured because I am very good at seeing a hard challenge coming, not going in recklessly for 40/60 balls and also grew up playing all kind of sports with a much bigger, stronger brother and his friends that I learned to survive against much physical stronger and faster by outthinking them and instinct.

Also, only 1 yellow card in my career (and it was a bad call). I just didn't get caught out like that.

One game, the coach was complaining how we were playing 'soft' against a team a better team who had a number of overage foreign imports.

Being co-captain, I felt like I had to set an example.

Against my better instincts, I went into a challenge 40/60 (which I never ever did) and somewhat haphazardly as well

I got creamed by a much bigger and stronger player who went full through a ball when my ankle wasn't full locked. Not good.

I immediately came off the field and after a few minutes tried to give it a go back on the field. Nothing worse than watching sitting bench and watching a game.

I lasted 5 minutes and tried to run and cut several times on it and it got worse and worse and hurt like hell and I was limping significantly and had no strength in my ankle.

8 hour bus ride back to college and ice around my ankle and an excruciating walk alone in the dark across campus with no help (felt like an eternity but was around 30-40 minutes), walking like a 90 year old man and it felt like needles going into my foot every step.

Woke up next day after super restless night, took a step on it and the pain was (somehow), even worse.

    Went to hospital.

As it turned out, I had tore ligaments in both sides of my ankle and to this day, I'm convinced that I made it materially worse by running on it after I knew 100% it was in bad shape.

But I did it for the 'team' (similar to what Christian did) and regret it to this day.

Later that season, I foolishly tore my cast off early in order to play in the conference tourney and that also screw up my ankle permanently (all because we had another player- a fast-healer on the squad, who tore his cast off after ankle problems..... and wound up fine. All my teammates were ragging on me, given Conference Tourney and all).

So I know this is a totally different era and a different level of play- but yeah I know you can see when an athlete is in trouble and can't continue..... and Christian looked like that for quite a while before he came out.

There are good odds he made it worse by continuing.

Also, at this stage of his career- I would expect him to be pretty finely tuned to know his body and when it can't go. I am surprised he pushed it in that Honduras game but I guess he felt a huge responsibility to be on the field when we needed him. (or something more from the team)

His status has been downgraded from 'glass" to "paper mache". We'll see if he can ever play more than 2/3 of a season fully healthy.

Defend an injured player? I don't understand what you are trying to say. Grade 2 ankle sprains take 3-6 weeks to heal. Add 2 weeks to regain fitness. That's 5-8 weeks. It's only been 5 weeks.

He played in 43 club games last season and was available for a few more when he wasn't selected. That's like an MLS guy playing every league game, plus nine more CCL and cup games. Very few players are built to play 40+ games every year, particularly small, fast attackers.

I'm at the point where I wish he would play in MLS. He's got nothing left to prove in Europe that I think he is really capable of proving. He's likely played some of his best soccer already so I would like to see him in MLS extending his career for club and country rather than being called a wuss because he can't get fouled 10 times a match, 60 times a year and travel back and forth across the Atlantic and N/C America without ever getting injured.

Tuchel has no authority when it comes to whether a player stays or goes at CFC, that belongs to Marina G. Trophy or not, CFC does not give a flying f**. TT gets to decide the game day squads and probably gives solicited input on what he sees as the team needs but at the end of the day the decision lies with Marina.

I recognize there are two very big "ifs" that will determine CP's future. If he can get healthy for a run of games and if he can recapture his top form, his injury woes will be forgotten. IIRC he has two more seasons after this one on his contract, so CFC aren't really under any pressure to make any decisions right this minute. Your imaginary and arbitrary line in the sand does not exist unless your name is Marina G.

F you for generations type of money does not have to comply with what we might think of as rational ways to spend money.

Does his game really strike you as the type that will age particularly well? He's quick. That's what makes him special and it's not something that is likely to last into his late 20s and 30s the way things are going. He already looks a step slower after the hamstring. I hope I am wrong and he goes on to become a far better player in the future than he has been in the past. But I am happy if he can just play at the level he has in the past for another six or seven years and I don't know that he will do it in Europe.

I think you have a point. He has good ball control, a soft first touch. He needs to work on dribbling more. Surprised? His dribbling today is mostly, "I'm quicker than you." I would like to see more of, "Oh look, you just fell for my feint." That would add another dimension to his game.

They have no reason to hurry him back.

And if a plan for Puli in January is in the works, a swap/loan, anything, then they probably have him bubble wrapped until it goes through.
