Very impressive performance to climb out of the hole. The team made the type of mistakes that you expect a young team to make - just please don't make them so early in your matches.
Yeah not good. You take the win, but that's not what you needed as a performance when this was a must win game. Gotta be better.
These players just need to play together. So many moments where it’s a chemistry thing. No more lineup shifts Gregg. Panama really feels like a missed opportunity now.
We got the result and that's something that young sides need to be able to do when they have rough matches. Still need improvement in a lot of ways. Subs weren't terrible at least.
Actually, if they're going to make those mistakes, I'd much prefer they make them early. Gives them 90 minutes to claw their way back.
True. I guess the way I'd see it is that I'd rather let that mistake happen in the 90+4 minute when up 2-0.
I think Zardes and Arriola are valuable off the bench in specific situations when the squad is carrying some injuries. I’m ready to move on from Lletget and Moore. Turner should start.
Proud of the boys for their response after last match. Dominated much of the match with not enough to show for it unfortunately. I wouldn't have started Steffen given that we need to damn near post clean sheets every time with our offensive woes. And despite the fact we were playing well, I would have used more subs given how tired Costa Rica was.
Musah and Dest masterclass. Thought this was one of the better matches we've played throughout the past few years.
definitely an eye opener for these guys on how they need to be better. This had a lot of the feel of England vs. Hungary... luckily CR are far below Hungary. Overall it was a solid performance (outside of Miles, his worst game by far in the jersey) Dest's goal was a full on golazo and Weah's quasi-goal was also a banger. Steffen was really unlucky on the goal, he could have done better on it, but sometimes you get caught in those situations and you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. Distribution though is class. Hopefully he can find some games at ManCity Our movement in the final third still needs work. Pepi needed to be a little more dynamic but our crossing left quite a lot to be desired. It's the downfall of a young striker, sometimes they just go quiet (outside of Haaland, which Pepi is not) Very happy to have our best 11 (10.5? as Busio may be above Musah, but they're both solid) on the pitch tonight out of what was available from selection. The adams, mcK, musah midfield was very effective and while not world beaters, is very respectable. We need to figure out a center defense pairing. Would like to see Brooks, Miazga and Richards fight it out. Miles will need to learn from this and be better. Nearly any other team outside of the glacial Costa Rica and he would have been punished badly. Not blown away by the performance, but it was very encouraging to see the team have flow today and seem much more cohesive - Amazing what a good starting lineup can do.
Unsatisfying performance and game against probably the least athletic team that we have faced in a long time, but we got what we'd needed. It's another chance for young players and a young team to learn and grow. I believe that, for at least the next window, Turner has to be our #1. I'm ok with Richards having had an inconsistent match. He needs to get his feet with with this team. There is a lot of promise, in theory, in a Richards-Miles partnership, but tonight's game doesn't exactly cement that. McKennie I felt was poor in the first half, but better in the second. I felt that we bet the house on beating them on both flanks, and we did, but it was still relatively difficult to create too many clear-cut chances because the Ticos consistently had numbers in the box. I was hoping to see a more diverse plan to break them down both through the middle and and down the wings. I thought LDLT might help in that regard. It didn't really happen. Again, I felt the key players were Adams, Dest, and Musah, and our best all-around attacker has been Aaronson.
Mistakes by young players happen. I remember Adams costing us points in CONCACAF champions league and playing like 10 games error free after. It happens. It’s frustrating. When we lose it won’t be from lack of pure talent. It will be because of age and or coaching. This team is good but they are going to be very VERY good next cycle.
I still think that a lot of these players can be useful to plug in the gap as the 10th or 11th player with a full team. I don't truly want to cast off any of the guys like them into the unknown. The mistake is putting out a squad in a World Cup qualifier with the idea that Zardes/Arriola/Lletget are the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd players on the team sheet.
Was fun to watch, but once again, an absolute struggle offensively. Lumping in crosses and never connecting. A world class goal, a 1 in 100 strike, and an awful turnover leading to a quick strike from Weah. We just can't create anything against a set defense. This is simply gonna be what we are. I think it'll still be plenty to qualify, as long as we keep rolling out this lineup, or something similar. I thought Richards was a rock, tons of nice headers settled directly to his teammates. As far as Miles, he's firmly in a rotation situation. We have good enough depth at this point, we simply can't have these ridiculous turnovers and fouls. Musah bossed the first half, disappeared in the 2nd. Thought McKennie had a rough start, but settled down pretty well. Aaronson needs to chill in front of goal. He wasn't even close with what could have been turned into dangerous situations. Dest and ARob need to play every game. Weah was good in the first half. Pepi had a couple nice touches in the first half. But none of this is good enough. We have so much talent, it's so easy to see on display. But Egg is giving us zero ideas in the final third. Oh well, job done. Let's all say it again - "Hopefully Egg will have learned after this window!!!"
Turner undoubtedly . The chemistry is getting more apparent every game, given GG picks the right starters. If he should not, and we drop points, I'm going to wherever the US Soccer headquarters are. Seriously, we have a great team. Some final third execution and we are bad ass.
I cannot tell if this is the post-season thread, on my phone. If it is, I will say what I said just BEFORE the Jamaica game, again just AFTER the Jamaica game, and yet again after the Panama game -- this team needs more passing out of midfield. McKennie and Musah look good as dual 8s, buy they don't provide enough passing. I advocated for Busio to start the game against Panama. Gregg passed. He did again today. But you can see the passing quality that Busio provides out of midfield, and it is sorely lacking. We can't have a midfield of piano movers -- and I know they may be EXCELLENT movers. However, we need a legitimate piano player in there too.
The vaunted XG perceives the US as over-performing by earning 2 goals out of 1.42. Of course, Costa Rica got 1 goal out of 0.24. 😅 pic.twitter.com/VY1axdeEAh— Paul Carr (@PaulCarr) October 14, 2021
Richards . . . yeah, experience means something at centerback. That train needs to slow down. Offensively we looked great for long stretches. Musah was a monster but predictably was gassed. Busio looked really composed. I hope we finally can settle into a more predictable roster. These guys are learning each other on the fly. We can be a really good team by the end of qualifying. Look at ARob's improvement now that he's better integrated.
