I was the one who said that a referee who has worked a good men’s NCAA division 2/3 or men’s NAIA league regularly would probably have as much experience as Radix has for a
WCQ match. I’ll stand behind that statement. I realize these smaller CONCACAF countries want their referees working these matches, but at some point Brian Hall should logically realize that you just can’t toss a guy like this into the deep end without a life jacket and say “swim”. You need to at least work him into some sort of progressive match setup. Has Radix ever worked a CCL match? Leagues Cup match? Liga CONCACAF match?

It’s patently unfair to the guy. It would be like me being asked to work a USL League 1 or Championship match. I’ll have no chance because I’ve never had close to the match workload to prepare me for it.

Maybe. It all depends. In a lot of ways, extremely tough amateur matches are better prep for what you might find in CONCACAF than a more sterile college setting would be. So this is a bit down the rabbit hole because it's really hard to make comparisons. But this statement that the experience of given referees might be equal is a lot different than saying level of play is comparable, which is how it was relayed when I responded above.

Yes, he had. I think we should dispell the myth that this assignment came completely out of nowhere. It took me back a little, but it made a lot of sense once I thought about it, given the realities of the region. Radix never had a WCQ before Thursday, which was odd given there were opportunities in the first round this cycle, but he has worked CCL, Nations League and other competitions. He wasn't just magically given his status with no senior level experience. He actually had the 3/4 playoff at the Nations League Finals in June, which in retrospect was a pretty obvious signal that he was tagged for the Octagonal and/or future development.

And, again, none of this is intended to defend him, his status or CONCACAF's overall referee development. Just trying to explain how this happened.

You might feel differently if the US gets eliminated from the World Cup on goal difference...

I'm sorry, but we should've been able to run up the score against 9 players if the referee was competent. That's the way it's supposed to work. Otherwise, why have red cards?

If the U.S. gets eliminated on goal difference my problems aren't going to start with the officiating in USA-Jamaica.

But that’s a huge leap. If the first had been sent off, the game would have been completely different and the same second play never would have been the same. So realistically, we’re talking about playing against 10, not 9. Still, it is true that it could have had a significant impact on goal differential.

At least of note was the CAN/MEX Gold Cup Semifinal.

Which was another deer in the headlights performance. With Barton out because of Covid, the pickings are pretty slim for a CONCACAF referee I’d trust on this match.

Hey guys. New here. Just found this forum from the Scuffed Podcast discord. Curious about the USA v. JAM general synopsis on the potential DOGSO's. My general feeling on the first was DOGSO. On the second, I had play on. But if you are gonna call that a foul, it meets the qualifications for DOGSO as well. Is that the general consensus on this group?

I'm asking not to belittle the official, because officiating is difficult. I'm just trying to learn from real world examples so if/when it happens to me, my decisions line up with the LOTG. Thanks! Excited to follow along with this group as incidents occur in the future.

I'd agree. I don't think the second is a foul at the pro level. But once you call the foul ..

It looks like the referee here is Ramos, not Parchment. Am I missing something?

    I think we should be 9-10. It’s Ramos so I’m guessing 5-6.

I mean, ALL of 95-97 was wasted. And he was admonishing the goalkeeper to not waste time. How do you not add any time to the minimum? I will never understand this aversion.

Not that it would have made a difference given that the USA didn't come close to getting a shot on goal, but that has to be one of the worst timekeeping jobs ever.

Should have been 10+ minutes of stoppage time to start with (the Acosta head clash was 6 minutes by itself, and there were several other injuries during the 2nd half, as well as multiple subs and a goal celebration.

And then he blows at exactly 97 minutes despite 2+ minutes of the 7 being wasted by Panamanian fans running onto the pitch and/or kicking balls onto the pitch.

    Just mind-boggling....

And Panama should have to play a game behind closed doors for that nonsense.....

I was telling my buddies that he was going to not add any mod time despite all of the shenanigans. Really sad, but fairly predictable for Concacaf.

Are we not playing the concussion sub rule in these qualifiers?

Because both teams really should have had one...
