I wonder if one reason the CR has gotten in the way so much is that he's not used to this level of soccer, the speed and intelligence of the players.

He plays better defense than most of the Jamaicans. He's just way too close to play. Also slowing down and really running choppy now. He just does not look like a referee who belongs at this level in any way, shape, or form.

Now he misses a clear step on Aaronson's foot. He's just terrible.

Two goal US lead might bail this dude out, at least in the minds of fans.

I’ve lived long enough to see someone call the US intelligent players. Thank goodness.

That could have been a penalty for Jamaica on first viewing.

Felt the same live. Didn't watch the whole game but he seems to avoid big decisions.

I'm guessing he realized at halftime he bottled both missed DOGSOs and realized that any big call against the US had better be painfully obvious. But in any case, a bad showing. No real courage to make big calls.

Knowing how Brian Hall likes his referees to keep it 11 v 11, I'm sure we'll see him on US-Mexico.

I started the match late and only saw a replay of the first play. It was certainly cynical with the shoulder grab but that’s a long way out on the wing and that ball is going straight down the pitch. At anything less than a pro game I don’t think that’s an OGSO. In the pro game I just don’t know. I’m 50/50.

The second one he boxed himself in. If he wants no call, be there and be loud and clear that you have no foul, good play by the defender. But if you have a foul you have to get the red out. I just don’t see how you can split the difference with yellow other than you are ending it 11v11. He took so long to finally go yellow he must have gotten input from everyone but the guy selling beer.

The old British term diabolical describes the center ref tonight.

Even if you miss the first red, you should be reflecting back on it, and give the 2nd one!

Not having VAR is as much of a joke as the guy in the center was...

I went back a few pages and literally laughed out loud at this one.

MassRef is right and you are wrong. He screwed up but didn’t affect the table; the US still collected all 3 points.

There can be no way Radix gets another meaningful match. Sure, he may get a dead rubber game, but not even Brian Hall is dense enough to put him on another match that means anything, right?

(Wait, don’t answer that. I’m afraid I know the answer…..)

Kind of off topic but back in August we had some impromptu training from a CONCACAF assessor from Trinidad and Tobago because he got stuck here visiting family pre-covid and was unable to get back home.

I managed to hold my tongue and never ask about what he thinks about the widespread belief that CONCACAF refereeing is a joke, and even though I didn't see this game (hope to get a replay of it), sounds like this was another CONCAClassic

Yeah, but if he had called the game properly with 2 reds I'd be willing to bet it would've really helped our goal difference....

There's really no excuse for not having VAR in WC qualifiers given that all the smaller countries use one stadium for all their home qualifiers.

How hard is it for CONCACAF to outfit five additional stadiums with VAR?

Anybody know if there are other federations NOT using VAR in their qualifiers?

You also have to train refs to use it. Not that its an insurmountable issue (it should be doable for CONCACAF), but its not just call up Best Buy and roll equipment into 5 stadiums.

Apparently we reached at least Stage 1 in MEX-CAN (watching the Seahawks defense fall on their face so I didn't see it).

And a nice loud one to end the match on the gk punt. The whole thing continues to be a joke.

There were 19 CONCACAF CR's and 12 CONCACAF VAR's at the Gold Cup.

That's plenty for WC qualifying given that there are only 8-12 matches per window.

As of last month, Africa. No idea if it's being implemented this week.

Perhaps Oceania but if they end up moving their qualifying to Qatar in early 2022 then I suppose they would likely have it.

"FIFA's regulations for 2022 World Cup qualifiers (Page 15) state: "FIFA and/or the confederation when applicable may use . . . a video assistant referee (VAR) system." So it sounds like it's optional, but the language doesn't make it clear which organization bears the responsibility to make it happen."

And all 12 VAR's are from USA/MEX/CAN (I'm pretty sure), which is a bit of an issue considering all 3 are playing in this stage. That's the problem. One CONCACAF failed to solve knowing it was coming, but once we got here I can't blame them for the decision they made.

Would be ironic if Mexico ended up having to play their home match against the US behind closed doors.....
