I don't feel bad for him but I do feel that how athletes respond to adversity usually defines their careers and if he wants to say in the upper echelon of world soccer it's time to respond positively.
Get what? You could argue that it took Miazga 4 years to 'get it'....whatever 'it' is. These players mature and go to the next level on a timetable that none of us can predict. Certain factors can help the odds (right coach, right team, right system, right league). Responding to adversity is a big one, but adversity can be defined many different ways- and those challenges never end. We aren't there to know if the player is able to solve technical flaws on the training ground. We can't get inside players' head to know their state of mind (are they close or far away) from a mental breakthrough that can significantly contribute to improve performance. Some of the younger players are still maturing physically. Some many be carrying injuries inhibiting performance. Maybe they have a lousy personal situation going on. So many factors we just can't know. What we do know is that players usually don't peak at age 20-23. Like all of us, they make mistakes at their job and usually learn from those mistakes. They mature physically and mentally, and come into their own. The repeated mistake around here is to judge players who are really young, really new in their career with some sort of broad, all-defining statements. It is too early for that. All of the kids you mentioned can still 'come good', with the exception of Green who at 26 is pretty close to what he will be. Miazga gets a slight pass from me as a defender who could still add some career-defining maturity in his game...still possible.
This is the wrong thread for this, but wait, WUT? MM has yet to prove himself adept anything other than dumbass decisions at horrible times. Well that, and he is probably getting good at changing addresses. Soccer intelligence/composure to be a top shelf CB not so much. As it pertains to Wes, well Wes has probably played more minutes at a CL team than Matt will ever get.
The most important thing at Juve is that after a shockingly bad start the team has 5 wins and a draw in their last 6 games. Wes has 2 starts (full 90) and 3 sub appearances in those 6 games. He may not be playing at his best, but he’s contributing to W’s.
I think he's been a bit of a scapegoat for an unimpressive midfield (other than Locatelli) this season, but having watched so much of him personally I can tell he's not right. Whether physically, mentally? Idk. But he's getting minutes and helping them win games, just gotta hope he can get through whatever it is.
He was at his peak during Nations League and he has just not been the same since. So hard to remain healthy and consistent in this game.
Most important thing to Wes and this thread is that he play better or he will find himself out of the club soon enough. Juve winning but Wes playing poorly won't spare Wes the axe as soon as Juve can do something about it.
I would agree that Wes had a rough outing when it comes to the technical side of the game. He messed up a few goal scoring chances, mishit some very completable passes as well as showing some poor touches. However, his "CM positing" is improving and likely the reason that he stayed on for 90' Saturday. If you are looking for positives, I would def. point that out! Bentancur and Arthur were both on the bench and neither were used. For me, that means Wes is providing enough to the teams shape and balance to stay on the field for Allegri. Let's be honest, 3 points is all that matters to him (and Juventus). Everything from pretty reputable journalists continue to indicate that Juventus really likes Wes and values him in the squad. So I think he will continue to get opportunities. However, Arthur has now returned, so how many and how long those chances come is up for debate. Go get some goals and put in some good shifts with the NT now! A change of scenery is probably going to do wonders for him. Forza Wes!
Italy is arguably the most tactically astute league out threre. He was not brought up through in it. The team probably sees in practice that he's more than capable of keeping up technically. My guess is that his head is spinning in the masters class of tactics he is receiving right now. He's thinking instead of reacting. My bet is that he gets the season to figure it out a show that he can keep up.
I thought about posting something similar. He's trying to stay in position and thinking more. Hopefully the loss of dynamism is only temporary and he gets better at picking the right moments to be aggressive under Allegri.
Wes has really got to use this USMNT time as a 're-boot', fresh start all the way around. Chance to really wipe the slate clean with good performances for USMNT (read= decisive actions, consistent play) and then channeling that back with better performances for his club. A total reset possible here. Hope he can embrace it and grab it. I think there is a good chance. He will be with his US brothers and he can find his joy/confidence again. Allegri will give him chances when he comes back.
And I think its worth mentioning again that one of the reasons Wes is being brought up in transfer rumors is because he is one of Juve's only sellable assets that they could get what they want for him. So any move for Wes is more out of financial necessity than anything
I think these are good shouts and agree it looks like he is thinking and processing things more out there. Obviously there is a balance of instincts and thinking but I that balance will hopefully get up to speed soon! This could be a very good growing pain that he is experiencing on a total career outlook.
I hope he refrains from embracing and grabbing anything related to anyone's US brother on the national team this go round... (Don't know if that language was intentionally evocative, but if so, that's some great subversive writing and I tip my cap to you Goal.)
