Alavés had not beat Atlético since May 2003. That was also a 0-1 win, but away at the, now defunct, Vicente Calderón.

How is it possible that a 25 year old who has bounced from several clubs
in Europe produce this kind of performance? Surely he is over-the-hill ;)

He was good with Reading and Anderlecht, but at some point it seems he was told they were not actually interested in getting him (Chelsea is known for keeping a guy in their loan army rather than selling him for a rational price), and it was reflected in his play, so both times he ended in a rather low note.

He was not good enough for Nantes, so I'd be wary of saying he's already proved he's good enough for La Liga. He had a good show, but it's still early. He's definitely trending up at this point, though.

what kind of performance? I haven't read how he played. All I've seen is that his team won.

An in-form Miazga is a starter with the NT in my mind.

Let's all remember that MM's annual bone headed play or behavior usually roles around in the middle or last third of a season. Would love him to do well here, just as I would've loved him to do well in his previous stops, but he'll either run his mouth or get a dumb red card or...

I doubt know if he’s a snub or not but Miazga was left off this round of WCQ’s. I am not mad about it. I think others are clearly above him in the pecking order. I hope he does continue to play well for Alaves. If it continues maybe he gets a recall.

For the best. He needs more time and consistency with his teammates and I'd hate for a stupid injury during qualifying to doom his new club.

Berhalter did say in his press conference Miazga was a close call.

Probably best for his club situation he was left off.

Nantes sojourn is probably not great as a serious data point: short stint, managerial and personnel issues. Vitesse is a better dot on the line - where he displaced a vet in due time. Good Champs side, upper-middle Ered, good Jupiler side. Miazga is clearly a very decent to good "2nd rung" player - and if he gets the right 1st rung situation he can should be able to hang.

I've all also seen enough of him at club and country to figure he's unlikely to be a "must have" at the top level, but I wouldn't be shocked if he could find a decent home at a club that can use his pretty-good-at-most-stuff skill set. He needs to find his Stoke.

"The hardscrabble tale of the MLS kid working for Chelski dollars in south England, mid-east Netherlands, Belgium, France and Atlantic Spain... Braving flights back to the US to battle on the fields of Mexico, Canada, and Central America and the Carrib... yet despite it all, this lanky warrior grabbed life by the balls... I mean, never looked down on... I mean, uh, always seems to land on his feet. It's a Murican story, through and through..."

It's puzzling to me. Maybe it's due to issues not directly related to soccer. I expected him to get the call.

Agree. I expected him on the list as well.

I can understand Gregg letting him settle in more before calling him

Might be why. I was surprised MM didn't get called in, but I also don't think he's a huge upgrade back there either.

I, too, really hope this move works out for him. He showed really well at Vitesse, and truly won a starting spot there. It's a bit surprising he hasn't locked in a situation since, but loanees have a different trajectory often. Be great if he could fine-tune his tactical awareness and overall leadership vibe. I feel he's got the skills and athleticism to land someplace, but adding a layer of wizened maturity as a back-line leader wouldn't hurt.

Early going but the overall Alaves defense review is positive... Alaves gave up a PK at about 5 mins but it was saved. Going only from match report I don't think it was on MM.

Looks like Bilbao scored at 55. No idea if MM involved.
