I agree Europe can be an exception because they have so many excellent options for properly hosting a big tournament.

Also, I don't think Qatar disqualifies China because again I really don't believe in "turns". Two entirely different regions in the Middle East and East Asia. Maybe it's just because we're not hearing anything out of China but I get the feeling they'll go all out for 2034 and that they'll probably get it.

I don't follow your logic that Mexico, a country in North America and usually the top team in CONCACAF, that has all of 3 host cities in 2026, in any way disqualifies another continent/confederation (CONMEBOL) from hosting in 2030 though. That's nuts!

I didn't say "disqualified" but I still think the CONMEBOL bid may lose some votes because 2026 WC is co-hosted by Mexico and it would mean 2 WCs in-a-row played in the Americas.

I also don't hear the term "rotation policy" being thrown around like it used to 20 years ago, but until I see the WC go back to the same region twice in, say, 16 years (or twice in 8 years for UEFA), I am going to believe that there is still some form of taking turns happening.

The only countries in Africa that I could see hosting are Morocco which has been trying to get one for ages (maybe as a joint bid with some of the other North African countries) or South Africa which might as well make use of its white elephants from 2010.

ok fair enough, I shouldn't have worded it that way. What I meant was that I don't think Mexico's small part of WC26 downgrades a bid out of CONMEBOL. But we really don't know FIFA's thinking, maybe it does in some of the FIFA leaders' minds.

I think CONMEBOL's many other problems are far more likely to screw their chances of getting the 2030 bid.

It seems like that means it is Africa's "turn." Five continents, like the Olympics definition of continents (5 rings).

What about a North African World Cup? With some combination of Egypt-Libya-Tunisia-Algeria-Morocco.

Politics and on-the-ground security will need to change fast for Libya, and probably Egypt too, to be considered. It could happen for Egypt, but Libya seems impossible. So, maybe Morocco-Algeria-Tunisia? But do Morocco and Algeria still have some political disputes between their governments?

I would not be surprised if Saudi Arabia tries to "buy" some games from Qatar for 2022, now that they have normalized relations. In the last year before the pandemic, Saudi Arabia started making a huge push for international tourism. They have greatly relaxed their visa requirements and are rapidly changing their culture to prepare for tourism. It seems they intend to follow something like the U.A.E. model in an effort to diversify their economy away from fossil fuels in preparation for a post-oil/gas green future. They probably regret not being involved in the Qatar World Cup bid.

I would absolutely love a North Africa World Cup. Now that would be an amazing experience. But it needs to happen while I'm young enough to be able to navigate something like that! 2034 at the latest.

I was also disappointed Morocco didn't join up with the Spain-Portugal bid, although there were probably issues with a cross-confederation bid.

I've seen some stuff about a joint bid though with Tunisia and Algeria and also with Egypt. A Morocco-Egypt bid sounds really fun. I haven't seen Lybya in any rumors though. I think I'd be ok with them being left off.

Libya actually has a lot of interesting stuff to see in the country, but the security situation seems like an endless nightmare. I think that has spilled over quite a bit into Egypt too over the last several years, with tourists being specifically targeted, which is scary.

In terms of travel logistics, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco makes the most sense. There would be a lot to see and do in those three countries. In terms of security issues, it is so far out into the future that it is anybody's guess.

For what it is worth, Wikipedia on the 2030 World Cup has this:

"The first proposed bid for the 2030 World Cup was by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation after losing its bid for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Morocco is possibly planning to co-bid with its eastern neighbours Algeria and Tunisia."

It seems that joint bid would need to be taken very seriously, if for no other reason than that it would be from Africa and all three nations are fairly regular participants in the World Cup finals.

Maybe dumb question coming here, but isn't the weather brutally hot in the summer in North Africa? (similar problem as with Qatar)

I was in Morocco in July and August a few years ago. The weather was actually quite nice (not too hot) along the coast and in Marrakesh and Fes. It was even foggy along the coast some days, in Tangier, Rabat, and Casablanca. It was VERY hot in the Sahara, on the other side of the Atlas Mountains, but the scenery was spectacular, with dunes, oases, kasbahs, etc.

The coast of Morocco was actually a lot cooler in summer than most of southern Spain, especially places like Seville and Cordoba.

I would expect the games to be exclusively in the coastal cities, but the other places are not too far away and definitely worth visiting. There also a lot of nice beaches in Morocco.

I agree, I don't think a Morocco solo bid for a 48-team World Cup has any chance. I think it has less to do about prior WC appearances than the fact that a successful bid for such a large tournament is going to require at the very least 12 large stadiums.

The number of countries that can host a 48-team World Cup by themselves without building a huge number of "white elephant" stadiums is limited to probably the USA and China. Otherwise, you're looking pretty much exclusively at combo options.

I would love to see a joint "Western Europe" bid, with all the matches in existing 70,000+ seat stadia (kinda like Euro 2020), and all the cities connected by high-speed rail.

Euro 2020-style is probably the way to go if you want the budget option.

A slightly more expensive but still manageable proposition would be to keep it to smaller groups of neighboring countries. You might need to use lower-capacity stadia, but that’s okay for group games.

    - UK/Ireland could probably just about manage it on their own
    - Spain/Portugal/Italy (maybe add France or Greece)
    - France/Netherlands/Belgium (maybe add Switzerland)
    - GER/NED/BEL (maybe add Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, perhaps even Poland - or some combination of these)
    - “Russia and friends”? - the stadiums are built anyway - though I don’t know who Russia’s friends are at the moment (Serbia? Bulgaria?)

Yeah, could probably have a few games in Minsk at least.

10 or 15 years ago you could probably have gotten Ukraine on board, but that’s out given the current situation. Poland has never liked Russia of course.

Probably mostly Russia and some of the smaller Orthodox countries.

At WC18 me and my buddy overnighted in Minsk on our way back from the England-Belgium match in Kaliningrad before heading to Moscow and the Russia-Spain R16 match 3 days later. It was a beautiful Friday summer night and everything was peaceful and Belarus seemed like such a cool place. We loved it. Then a couple years later the shit hits the fan there and now they have this terrible situation. Truly sad.

Can't blame Uruguay for having whiplash after FIFA rubber-stamped it for so long.

Fifa's decision hurts our national pride, but is unrelated to our 2030 chances.

yeah unless this somehow blows up into some massive ugly confrontation (doubtful) I can't see how it has any meaningful effect on any bid. Other factors are WAY more important, money not the least of them.
