September is nearly over - someone wake up Billie - and that means it's time for the playoff push. In 2020, like many things that year, it was full of disappointment and not even worth venturing to do with RSL. This year? Well, we seem to want to try to be involved with it. Make it known, I'm under no illusions that this team is going to mount and MLS Cup run or anything of that sort. But before the season I, like many others, counted this team as one of the worst in the league. To be in this position signals an above expected performance from RSL (and, it must be said, some truly below expected performances elsewhere). So, without further Freddy Adu, here is the playoff picture as of September 23, 2021: *Reminder, top 7 teams make playoffs in each division EASTERN CONFERENCE 1. I failed to appreciate just how compact the schedule is at the end I the year. I predict an ugly playoffs.
dont worry, there is another FIFA window in there too from the 8th to the 16th. That will totally get the rest...
We talking about playoffs? Yes folks I am alive. Anyway I do think it’s Possible to make the playoffs this year. I think the main issue will be for Pablo to get this team to have a consistent 11 and not to lose concentration which I feel is often their Achilles heel. PS good to see some of you again.
In the East 2 of the top 3 teams are New England and RBNY. In the West 2 of the top 3 teams are Kansas City and Colorado. So late November and December look promising to be another MLS Ice Cup. IMO the annual possibility that the Cup can be played on “The Frozen Tundra”, to borrow a NFL historical event, is one of the things that keeps me from taking MLS very seriously. It’s truly a f****** joke. Soccer was never meant to be played on a hockey rink.
The ice, the post, the 2nd yellow, Seba. If only. I thought for sure Seba was going to go up there and confidently nail his PK but alas it was not to be. I actually have a promotional poster from that game hanging in my shed.
NO! Playing in those conditions was, and those in the future, will be…a travesty. That’s in regard to MLS Cup. When El Tri has to play the USMNT in the snow in Colorado…hey, that’s how the CONCACAF cookie crumbles.

5 points separate spots 5-10 in the West. That is absolutely insane. Really, Portland isn't all that much better than that group, either. They certainly looked good against us, but they've also had some howlers this year. The pair of games this week (Wed and Sat/Sun) for the Western Conference are going to potentially really create some separation or, with how things are going, only further muddy the waters.
Points aside, the big problem with the Portland disaster is the hit we took on goal differential. With so many teams being so close on points, having a positive GD will be a big factor in who gets the final playoff spots. There are four teams separated by two goals. Giving up five to Portland could come back to haunt RSL.
to be fair*, GD is the second tiebreaker (for whatever reason) after total number of wins. Unsurprisingly, the playoff line right now in the West aligns with the teams with the most wins. This isn't some super shocking statistic, when you think of it, but it makes said tiebreaker really weird. RSL pretty rarely draws games (only 6 draws on the season while other playoff battling teams have around 7-9) that this might work in our favor. But yeah, going from a +6 GD to +1 in a single game is not going to be helpful. *

The Eastern Conference standings are nuts. New England are far and away from everyone, Nashville has a slight gap, but then spots 3-8 are separated by all of 3 points. NYC went from 3rd to 6th this week. Atlanta are right there outside the playoff line. Like LAFC, everyone is scared if they figure it out late with how talented they are. Philly is the only team in the list that plays over the break - away to Cincy. They could jump above the crowd. In the West, Seattle and KC are at the top but not by anywhere near the same distance. Seattle play during the FIFA break - at Vancouver - so they have a chance to widen the gap. It's equally a chance for Vancouver to jump into the playoffs so it should be a fun game. For RSL, the 3 game run from 10/23 to 10/30 is where points must be won. Two of those games are on the road, where we aren't great, but against weak sides (Chicago and Dallas) so expectations should be higher. If we get to the last two games of the season needing points we will be in a rough spot as we finish with Portland at home and then at SKC.

Out of the remaining schedules it looks like PTFC, which I dislike with a passion, don’t know if I have mentioned that before, looks to have the most favorable schedule. It would look like they have a better chance moving above Colorado than RSL has in catching them. Looks like all the leaders play each other down the stretch. Should get very interesting. And I hate PTFC. Don’t get me started on Chara either.
I read something last week about a scenario where the author figured out the combination of results needed to create something like a seven way tie for second in the East.
