The LA Force certainly don't make it easy to find out about what happened int heir games.

hey, what's more authentic than making you go to the game to find out? (are they the ones where you can't go to the games?)

The result of the Detroit - New Amsterdam game isn't on Google or ESPN.

It doesn't look like it. But that's gotta be down to NISA.

Detroit City did make #1 on the SportsCenter Top 10 yesterday though:

The irony being that USL announced that they would be proposing the opposite at the next AGM (not that I think it will get approved, for exactly the same reason NISA is ditching it). USL can more validly make the argument about international transfers than NISA, however. You could probably also make the case that fall to spring aligns better with the collegiate timetable (graduate in June, start on a pro team in August, etc.) which I figure probably supplies a fairly significant percentage of their rosters.

I still think it probably makes the most sense to align with MLS’s calendar, though.

The name is fine; what matters is what you do with it. Their success, or lack of it, will come from their effort to market the team and the fan experience they provide. I wish them good luck; in D3 soccer in America, they will need it.

If you're a new team, the branding and marketing is most important. The rest like roster building, ticket sales, front office, merchandise will eventually come later.

Take for example Seattle Kraken. Name is a mixed bag, but it has been a hit when they released the logos, colors, etc.

Valley United...well, um...yeah. It's not good. The logo was made out of Football Manager create a team, just hazily and cheaply made.

I’m not sure why you have the scare quotes here. Unlike other NISA-related gaffes, this one was pretty unpreventable short of Bobcats making their home stadium into the “Maryland SoccerDome”.

Yeah, I'm quoting what it said on the lengthy (and mildly amusing) match notes here.

Oh right! Yeah, I saw on Twitter they played basketball during the delay.
So I like how, for a match report that’s that detailed, there’s no details of the goals in the timeline!

Edit: reworded - the goals are there, just nothing about them

I think Valley United is a crap name as its geographically vague. There are several geographical areas in the United States known as "The Valley", notably California's Central Valley or "San Bernadino Valley", see what I mean.

I don’t really like the name or the logo, but I don’t think the vagueness matters much. They’re D3: they have to engage locally. It doesn’t really matter if someone outside of Phoenix doesn’t immediately know that it’s referring to that valley or whatever. If they do manage to engage fans locally, their name won’t matter either, because they’ll have a reputation of being a D3 club that actually has a following.

So the club represents the urban sprawl and available timeshare homes for snowbirds?

'Phoenix Rising' at least has some character with a play on words. It stands out from Coyotes, Cardinals, Diamondbacks and Suns.

so, all the long-term success factors, then?

so was 'mighty ducks' a while ago.

what this team is called is barely going to impact the movement of the needle. the place they are going to play looks nice from what i can see, but they are still going to be a (likely) under financed team in a fly-by-night league. that will determine more than if they came up with some bangup branding (which has been rare in lower-level soccer lately).

i tried googling them today and there were a bunch of different valley uniteds and the one that looked like it was from phoenix had a different front office than was described.

we have reached the point where most new teams seem to have uninspired, derivative and uncreative names and branding. but that ain't why they are struggling.

Apparently there's youth soccer clubs with the same name in Virginia, Nevada and California. And an unrelated church. And an unrelated YMCA center.

Like I said, this will go well.

Updated NISA Fall Season Attendance as of 9/21/21:

    39 matches played

    Detroit City: 6,076/4,664/3,894/3,969

    Chattanooga FC: 2,916/2,008/2,158/1,946/1,960

    Michigan Stars: 1,628/1,857/0*/0*

    Chicago House: 1,183/1,013

    California United: 653/525/0*/685/1,738

    New Amsterdam: 278/333/404/319

    Maryland Bobcats: 305/362/292/312

    1904 FC: 237/182/393

    Stumptown: 167/189/164/245

    Los Angeles Force: 0/0/175/0

    • I chose not to provide the total and average attendance because there were some matches without a reported attendance number. I'm probably not going to provide it from now on.
    • With that being said, not much of a difference compared to two weeks ago. More than half of NISA's teams are under 1,000 spectators and yes, I still don't believe Michigan Stars' attendance number.

How things have changed. There was a time where "The Valley" meant the San Fernando Valley. Like, fer sure.

But now they're all united, except they're not.

I Googled Valley United and the top three responses were a Washington Spirit affiliate in the Shenandoah Valley VA, a kid's academy in the San Fernando Valley and another kid's club in the Central Valley.

This is very NISA, everything seems to go off half-cocked. I do admire the amateur full season, with the possibility of turning pro, but I'm starting to think that the Roots did the sensible thing.

There has been a "the Valley" in Texas for well over 100 years. Officially the Rio Grande Valley but "the Valley" has been in common use since the late 1800s. It isn't even a valley geographically.
